Part 6: Traditions That Shaped OV

A look back at the activities, celebrations, and traditions that brought generations of OV students together.

For generations of OV students, school traditions helped create memories that extended far beyond the classroom. From spirit weeks and performances to dances, competitions, and celebrations, these shared experiences became part of what made OV special. Through photographs and memories preserved in OV yearbooks from the 1970s through the 2010s, this installment of the OV Heritage Series looks back at the traditions that brought students together across the decades.

School spirit and community traditions brought generations of OV students together.
From relay races and team challenges to cheering classmates from the stands, Spirit Week gave OV students a chance to show their Viking pride while creating memories with friends and classmates (2006).

Different Decades, Same OV Spirit!

Though styles and generations have changed, the spirit of OV has remained the same. Students from 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016 represent the friendships, traditions, and school pride that continue to connect Vikings across the years.

School Spirit & Student Life

School spirit has long been part of the OV experience, bringing students together through pep rallies, spirit weeks, themed events, and traditions that created lasting memories.

From costumes and special activities to shared celebrations, students of all ages came together to enjoy the traditions and experiences that helped build a strong sense of community at OV (1976).
Lasting memories were created not only through events, but through the friendships formed along the way (1986).
Spirit Week encouraged students to show their creativity, enthusiasm, and school pride through themed dress-up days, friendly competitions, and class activities. Traditions like these helped create lasting memories while bringing the OV community together (1996).

Performances and Creativity

Performances and creative events gave generations of OV students opportunities to showcase their talents both on stage and behind the scenes.

Organizations such as Color Guard allowed students to develop leadership, discipline, and teamwork while representing their school (1976).
The performing arts have long been an important part of student life at OV. Concerts, musical performances, and productions such as Flowers for Algernon gave students opportunities to express themselves creatively while entertaining audiences and building lasting memories (1986).
Student musicians shared their talents through band and vocal performances that enriched school life and brought the community together. These experiences helped foster creativity, teamwork, and a love of music  (1986).

From classic musicals such as Annie to dramatic productions, theater provided students with opportunities to develop acting, public speaking, and teamwork skills while showcasing their talents before the school community (1996).
From elementary performances to full-scale theatrical productions, OV students shared their talents through acting, music, and storytelling. Productions such as Beauty and the Beast, Fair Exchange, and The Edge of Their Seats! provided opportunities for students of all ages to develop confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills while entertaining the school community (2006).
The performing arts continued to be a vibrant part of student life at OV, providing opportunities for students to explore music, theater, and public performance. Through productions such as Aladdin and The Lottery, concerts, and special performances, students developed confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills while sharing their talents with the community (2016).
From past productions to this year's performance of "Emma," student theater has remained an important part of the OV experience, creating memories for both performers and audiences alike (2025-26).

DANCES & CELEBRATIONS

School dances and celebrations created lasting memories for OV students and became some of the most anticipated traditions of the school year.

Special events such as prom gave students a chance to celebrate with classmates, enjoy longstanding traditions, and create memories that would be remembered long after graduation (1976).
From crowning the prom court to sharing a dance with friends, OV's formal celebrations brought students together to mark important moments and enjoy traditions that were eagerly anticipated each year (1986).
Prom and Winterfest were among OV's most anticipated traditions, bringing students together through music, performances, friendly competition, and celebration. These events highlighted the creativity, talent, and camaraderie that defined student life (1995).

From field days to school fairs and friendly competitions, OV traditions often brought students together through teamwork, school pride, and shared experiences.

From athletic competitions to community fair day activities, students enjoyed opportunities to challenge themselves, build friendships, and participate in traditions that brought the school community together (1976).

Traditions beyond the classroom

Many OV traditions extended beyond academics, helping students build leadership skills, friendships, and connections within the school community.

From Ski Club to maple sugaring, students participated in activities that connected learning, recreation, and community traditions beyond the classroom (1976).
Clubs and extracurricular activities allowed students to pursue shared interests, develop new skills, and connect with classmates through experiences beyond the classroom (1986).

Different Decades, same OV spirit

While styles, traditions, and activities may have changed over the years, the memories created through these shared experiences continue to connect generations of OV students.

Though the faces, fashions, and traditions may have evolved, the spirit of OV has remained remarkably consistent across the decades.

The photographs in this installment were selected from OV yearbooks spanning five decades, offering a glimpse into the experiences that connected generations of students.
From learning and play to clubs, activities, and school events, generations of OV students have shared the same enthusiasm, friendships, and school spirit that continue to define the OV experience today (1976).
