Year 3

In maths, the children have been learning how to use formal written methods for addition and subtraction. They practised setting out calculations clearly and accurately, and showed great perseverance when working through more challenging problems that involved carrying and decomposition. Geography saw us learning more about Greece where we compared its climate with the UK. The children discussed similarities between the two countries and thought carefully about how these could be presented through pictures. We also acted as the Greek Tourist Board, researching and describing the physical features of Greece, including mountains, coastlines and islands; they considered how these features could tempt tourists to visit. In English, we began a new unit on non-chronological reports. The children learned about some of Heracles’ Twelve Labours and developed their listening skills by taking notes from an audio recording. They practised turning these notes into full sentences which will be used to build a detailed report. Classes have continued to read Beasts of Olympus, using their inference skills to work out why Demon behaves the way he does.

Year 4

We have come to the end of another week where the children have worked diligently and conscientiously.  In English, we have continued to focus on persuasive texts - in particular, travel blogs. Using an example, the children identified a range of persuasive devices before devising their own. These were used to write a blog to encourage someone to visit Rome.  As mathematicians, there has been a further emphasis on fractions and decimals. The children have used various resources and their times tables knowledge to calculate equivalent fractions. In addition, they have used their knowledge of place value to link fractions to their decimal equivalents. From this, some groups were able to compare fractions and decimals using the correct symbols. Some children also used these skills to order sets of fractions and decimals.  In science, the children studied the process of melting and freezing. Together, they conducted an experiment to find out whether ice melts quicker in fresh water compared to salt water – with some surprising results!  The children were mathematicians within their Connected Curriculum lessons this week. They were provided with a list of ingredients required to make pizza. In order to cater for the needs of specific numbers of children, their task was to use multiplication and division skills to scale the recipe up and down. Furthermore, their task was to design their own pizza whilst adhering to the design brief.  They had to consider factors such as taste, appearance and also consider a balanced diet when creating their final design.

Year 5

It seems that this week has almost finished as quickly as it started and it is unbelievable that when we return to school next week, it will be a brand new month.     This week in maths, we focused on strengthening multiplication and division skills. We began by revisiting formal multiplication methods, including calculations with numbers containing up to two decimal places. To continue developing fluency, we encourage children to use TT Rockstars regularly. We then moved on to division, both with and without remainders, and explored how to interpret remainders in word problems, deciding when to round up or down. We finished the week by applying all four operations to one and two-step problems and in some classes, working on simple scaling and rate problems. The children were excited to begin our new layered reading text - an abridged version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. After exploring the story, they identified the main characters, their relationships and what their interactions reveal about them. They went onto focus on Miranda and Caliban, considering how their relationship changes and for whom they felt most sympathy. The children also completed their termly comprehension, concentrating on reading stamina and supporting answers with evidence. We ended the week with poetry, exploring haikus and writing versions inspired by our Fragile Earth topic, following the 5–7–5 syllable pattern. They rose to the challenge and produced thoughtful, creative work.    In science lessons, we asked the children to recall previous learning and describe the ways in which some plants reproduce asexually.  They were asked to take cuttings and plan an investigation based on which cutting would grow best.  They had to identify variables including a control and consider how to measure/observe the outcome.  We are looking forward to seeing how their investigations progress.    In geography, we continued exploring natural disasters. The children learned about tsunamis: where they commonly occur, how they're caused and their human and environmental impacts. We then moved on to flooding, discussing what floods are, why they happen and how human activity can increase the risk. The children analysed a UK flood case study, including video evidence and took on the roles of reporters, rescue workers and community members to create TV-style reports. They identified causes of flooding, how communities can respond, and ways to reduce future risk. The children approached the task with maturity, showing empathy and responsibility in their roles.   In Communication Books, you will find a note about some items we need for an upcoming D&T project.  During the week beginning 9th February, each class will be designing and creating table-top flood barriers.  Please could the children bring in items which could be used such as: small plastic bottles (< 1 litre), clean plastic food punnets, cardboard tubes (kitchen roll etc) and newspaper.  Many thanks in advance.

Year 6

Year 6 have enjoyed another engaging and creative week of learning across the curriculum. In English, pupils used persuasive and emotive language to write powerful nominations for a Simply the Best Award — a fictional award celebrating a member of the school community. Their writing was full of passion, warmth and positivity, with many pupils producing highly emotive pieces that demonstrated a strong awareness of audience and purpose. In science, pupils developed their classification skills by creating dichotomous keys to identify living things. They carefully selected suitable questions based on observable physical characteristics, strengthening their ability to think logically and scientifically. As artists, pupils learned about Henri Rousseau and explored the techniques he used in his work, while also discovering that he never actually visited a rainforest himself. Inspired by his style, pupils began planning a collage incorporating the rainforest animals they have been drawing. In geography, pupils expanded their understanding of rainforests around the world, learning to distinguish between temperate and tropical rainforests and exploring the key features of each.

Online Safety

Children and young people are increasingly turning to social media for mental health advice, but much of what they encounter online is unverified, oversimplified or misleading. This guide explores why platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become go-to sources and how misuse of clinical language and viral trends can distort children and young people’s understanding of mental health.  Aimed at parents, it offers clear, expert-led strategies to counter misinformation. The guide looks at topics such as encouraging open conversations, identifying reliable sources, and strengthening school–home collaboration. Use this information to build young people’s critical thinking, resilience and confidence in seeking appropriate professional help when needed.

Years 3/4 Southend Football Competition

The West Leigh football team were involved in more sporting drama on Friday as they competed against 15 other schools in the annual Southend football competition. Despite having not played much competitive football together, the boys quickly jelled as a team and were a force to be reckoned with! Over the course of the day, West Leigh were unbeaten and only conceded two goals in their fifteen matches. They won 10 and drew 5 of their matches. The shield was shared between West Leigh and St Michael's this year as we were both tied on points and drew 0-0 when playing against each other. A magnificent achievement by the team and a nice touch to share the shield with a fellow Leigh-on-Sea school!

Year 5/6 Boys' Football v Northwick Park

West Leigh competed in the quarter finals of the Jim Smith Essex Cup against Northwick Park on Monday. The boys are hoping to recreate their cup journey from last year when they reached the final! This quarter-final fixture was a tough match against a school that have defeated us twice in the previous two years. West Leigh played tremendously in this match and every player on the pitch worked tirelessly. The team stuck to the game plan and their efforts were rewarded with a 6-3 win! We now face a wait to hear who we will play against in the semi-finals. Well done, boys! It is a joy to watch you play football.

Year 6 Girls' Netball v Hockley

A team of Year 6 netball players competed in a friendly match against Lift Hockley on Wednesday. It was a great experience for the girls and for some, their first time playing against another school. The girls have been training in their after-school netball club and had the opportunity to play in various positions throughout this match. Their passing quickly improved and after the pre-match nerves had disappeared, West Leigh were much more fluid in their attacking plays. Lift Hockley were the winners of this match but there was great defensive work, especially from Sienna and two fantastic goals from Lilly. Well done, girls!

Sitting Volleyball

On Wednesday, seven children from Years 4, 5 and 6 participated in a sitting volleyball competition at Garon Park. Playing in teams of six, the children had to remain seated on the court whilst hitting a beach ball across a low net. The whole team demonstrated a combination of enthusiasm, resilience and teamwork throughout their matches and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Year 5/6 Football v Our Lady of Lourdes

The Year 5 and 6 boys' football team continued their success in their latest league and friendly match against Our Lady of Lourdes on Thursday. The boys played with great confidence and strong team work, demonstrating excellent attacking and defending skills. The league team secured a 6-2 victory and the friendly team won 6-3. Fantastic efforts from the whole squad.

Inspirational Person - David Attenborough

This half term's inspirational person is the amazing Sir David Attenborough. In the year that he turns 100, we learned about some of the incredible ways he has taught us about our responsibility for the planet. He did not start his career with the aim of saving the world - but as he was given the chance to spend time with so many different creatures in their habitats, he realised that they were in danger. Some of his programmes talk directly about these problems, but most of the time he likes to show how wonderful nature is, hoping it will make people want to look after it. We thought that Sir David really showed us how to take responsibility for the world around us, through teaching people how our human actions affect animals and their habitats. By explaining climate change, pollution and habitat loss in a clear and calm way, he helps us understand that we all have a responsibility to look after the Earth for future generations. Responsibility also means sticking with something even when it’s hard or slow. David Attenborough has dedicated his entire career to conservation, showing us that being responsible isn’t a one-time action—it’s a lifelong choice. Well done to all of our Showbie challenge winners for the last half term. This term's Showbie challenge will hopefully help us to make the world a better place - one small bit at a time.  Use the WWF link to find out some of the ways that you can help. Choose one and tell me what you did – you could share a photo of a nature walk, a letter that you have sent your MP or you could even tell me how you became a Walrus detective! Attendance

Well done to 5N who achieved the best attendance this week with an impressive 99.31%!

Outside Achievements

Congratulations to the following pupils, who were selected to represent Expressions Theatre Arts at the National Entertainment Awards on Sunday evening. The group delivered an outstanding performance, resulting in Expressions being awarded Best Performing Arts School in South East England. In further exciting news, the group has also been invited to perform on Broadway in New York in 2028. The girls should be extremely proud of their achievements, and we commend them on their dedication, talent and teamwork. Well done to: Indy, Esme, Poppy, Daisy, Sophia, Ruby, Olivia, Hanna and Scarlett.

Bronze Medal Success for Primrose

Congratulations to Primrose, who represented Dive London at the Surrey County ASA Diving Skills competition this weekend. Competing against 24 other girls in her category, Primrose achieved an impressive third place, bringing home the bronze medal. This was only her third competition since joining Dive London just 11 months ago, making her achievement all the more remarkable. Well done, Primrose - we are very proud of you!
