“Be passionate. Be genuine. Be hardworking, and don't be afraid to be great.” – Pete Frates, ‘07

Pete Frates '07

Pete Frates was a former Eagle, captain of the Boston College Baseball team of 2007. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 at the age of 27 and fought a strong battle until 2019. After being diagnosed with ALS in March 2012, he was named the Director of Baseball Operations for BC Baseball. Pete was a strong fighter and the epitome of what it means to be an Eagle.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Pete Frates spearheaded the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 along with Pat Quinn and Anthony Senerchia. The Challenge raise over $115 million for the ALS Association and above $200 million for ALS research. This worldwide Challenge led to the involvement of over 17 million people, joining together to spread awareness and fight ALS.

ALS Awareness

Boston College Baseball has held an annual ALS Awareness game since 2011, shortly after the diagnosis of Pete Frates. These awareness games are at the crux of the program and ignite us to live the mission to Strike Out ALS.

Birdball x Fenway x ALS Awareness

The annual game is played in honor of former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates since his ALS diagnosis in 2012. This year marks its third time being played at Fenway Park. Frates passed away in 2019 at the age of 34.

Proceeds from general admission tickets will benefit the Peter Frates Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting ALS patients and their families with the cost of specialized home care required for patient stability as the disease progresses.
