Inside the Denton music scene

Denton, Texas is known for being a city filled with artists and musicians. The vibrant college culture combined with a tight knit artistic community has helped shape a scene that is both deeply personal and diverse. All types of shows from house to late night gigs that can spread to more than just Denton but around the DFW area. Local bands are continuing to build their identities while balancing passion with everyday life.

Cash Wright - Atcitdio

For over three years, Cash Wright has played as a bassist for Atcitdio which has helped the band explore a broader music range. His bandmates say his presence and commitment to the band has made him a key part to the bands identity. Beyond music, Cash works as a server and tries to balance rehearsals, performances, and server trays.

" It’s a demanding lifestyle, but one that many of us here have to do," says Cash Wright.

Reflecting on the reality for musicians in the Denton area. Cash’s musical talents has helped anchor the band by allowing room for experimentation. His participation in the band has helped Atcitdio grow from small local shows into opportunities to connect with wider audiences in DFW.

Gian Sanchez - RightBehindYouTX

Gian Sanchez, who is a lead guitarist for RightBehindYouTX, brings energy to his band according to his bandmates. Gian is able to not only be a guitarist but can be on vocals as well as various different musical instruments such as piano. Gian is a soon graduated student from the University of North Texas. While he hopes to continue his artistry after graduation financial struggles within the band moves Gian to possibly venture other options. His band as well as many others struggle to make enough money at gigs averaging 200 to 300 shared amongst a band of 5.

"We love what we do and our community too but I wish there was more public support, we work a lot," said Gian Sanchez

Camden McDirmavich — Isonant

Camden McDirmavich, a 23 year old electrician, spends long hours solving mechanical problems and fixing engines. Outside of work he focus his time on his DJ music. Camden is a member of the band Isonant, where he pursues his focus on being a DJ by blending music and experimenting with productions. Just as many other artists in the Denton area his musical ambitions come with financial strains. The cost of software and equipment can run him upwards of thousands without taking in account the performance costs. Making his career in being a mechanic an essential part to sustain his artistic career.

"I have two careers, but one pays for the other," said Camden McDirmavich when asked about having two jobs.

Past the struggles of being an artist, Camden continues to pursue his artistic and educational dreams.

These artists are connected not just by their location but by their shared experiences with venues and economic struggles. The Denton music scene is filled with artists ranging from local students to graduates who juggle various jobs with their creative ambitions. While there is no guaranteed path to becoming successful these creatives are able to build followership through word of mouth promotions and a strong sense of community. For Cash, Camden, and Gian, music is not just a hobby. It's something they work toward every day even with the uncertainty of success.
