Volleyball Moves to 3-0 in NESCAC, Holds Share of the Lead
In a four-match week, the Colby Volleyball team ran its win streak to five before falling Saturday to a strong Babson team.
Taking down the Bobcats of Bates College Wednesday, Colby was led in kills by Azariah Love with eight. Reanna Yadao continues to deliver a spark from the Defensive Specialist position, ranking sixth in the conference in total digs and digs/set. The midweek victory pushes the Mules to 3-0 in NESCAC play.
Taking to the road for the weekend, Colby made short work of Johnson & Wales (3-1) and Coast Guard (3-0) before running into a tough Babson team Saturday, who were in pursuit of extending a win streak of their own. The two regional foes met head on, and despite nine kills by first-year Brady Moseley (photo), the Beavers secured the match 3-1.
Colby is currently 7-3 overall, 3-0 in NESCAC, and shares the lead in the conference standings. The Mules head to Middletown Friday to take on the undefeated Wesleyan Cardinals.
Men's Soccer Runs Shutout Streak to Five with Draw Versus #2 Williams
In Colby’s first matchup on the weekend against the #2 Ephs, goalkeeping and strong defense played out the entirety of the match as the game concluded with a 0-0 draw. The Mules accounted for eight scoring opportunities in the game but unfortunately could not convert, while junior netminder Brendan McCarthy tallied yet another shutout in his fifth start this season.
The following day, Colby headed to the #7 ranked Mammoths for their second conference game of the weekend. Regardless of the Mules consistent offense and lights-out defense this year, Amherst gained a big lead putting up the first four goals of the game. In the second half, sophomore Eduardo Casanova was successful on back-to-back penalty kicks in the 62nd and 69th minutes (his first collegiate goals), closing the deficit to 4-2. In the final minutes, Amherst tallied once again, increasing their lead to 5-2 and issuing Colby’s its first loss of the season.
The Mules are now 3-1-2 on the season and will be back at home this week for another NESCAC matchup against Tufts on September 30.
Women's Soccer Comes From Behind to Upset #19 Hartford
Despite falling to two well fortified nationally ranked teams, #13 Williams and #10 Amherst, the Mules were able to take down #19 Hartford Tuesday in a highly competitive contest.
Against the Hawks Colby played well alongside the opposition in the first half, entering the break down 1-0. Late in the second half, 2022 leading scorer Sophie DiGrande was able to put a shot into the back of the net for the equalizer with only five minutes to go. Colby kept up the pressure and with only 60 seconds remaining in the match sophomore Fati Salifu gave the Mules the lead off a left footed bar down shot, sending the crowd and Colby bench into an uproar. The Mules went on to hold the Hawks for the remaining seconds, claiming the 2-1 victory.
Women’s Soccer now sits at 2-5 on the season with a home NESCAC matchup against Tufts coming up on September 30th.
After Tying a Program Record Tuesday, Field Hockey Loses Tight Battle with #11 Amherst
The Colby Field Hockey team hosted UMaine-Farmington midweek for a non-conference showdown. With goals scored by 10 different Mules, the hosts tied a program record for goals in a match in their 12-0 eruption (Colby also scored 12 goals in 1997 versus Eastern Conn. State). Molly Mitchell and McKay Allain led the Mules with two goals apiece.
In conference play over the weekend, the Mules fell Saturday 8-1 to #8 Williams (lone Colby goal scored by Charlotte Epker) before taking on the 11th-ranked Amherst Mammoths Sunday. Pernilla Shaw tied the game at one with her fifth goal of the season early in the third quarter. The Mammoths were able to convert once more early in the fourth to steal the 2-1 victory.
Colby returns home on Saturday, hosting #5 Tufts. The Mules upset the Jumbos in a thriller last year in Medford.
Football Tight at the Half with Trinity
With the 2022 NESCAC Champion Trinity Bantams riding a 12-game win streak dating back to 2021, the Colby Football team opened at home set to end the streak. The last time Trinity visited Mayflower Hill the Mules took a 12-0 lead into halftime before slipping behind in the second half.
The Mules got on the board first when quarterback Miles Drake connected with Colby's leading receiver from a year ago, Jack Sawyer, for his first score of the season. With a staunch defense holding the Bantams to three first-half field goals, Colby entered the break down 9-7.
Trinity exploded in the third quarter for 30 points and over 200 yards of offense en route to a 48-7 victory, extending their win streak to 13 games. Colby was led on offense by Keon Smart who tied a career-high with seven receptions. Julian Young paced the Mules on defense with 12 tackles, nine solo, and currently leads the NESCAC in both categories with 26 and 22 respectively.
The Mules head to Lewiston on Saturday for a game under the lights with CBB foe Bates College. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
Women’s Tennis Battles at ITA Regionals
Over the weekend the Mules headed to Middletown, Conn. for the ITA Regional tournament featuring some of the best players from across the northeast. Colby was well-represented with three players in the A singles draw, four in the B singles draw, and three doubles teams in the round of 64 doubles flight.
First-year Jade Finestone led the way for the Mules securing two wins, one over her Brandeis opponent and the other over Middlebury in the B singles flight. Weather delays unfortunately ended the B flight prematurely, as well as Finestone’s campaign.
Senior captain Sam Riordan came into the tournament as a five seed taking down Babson’s Chaniel Soffer in the first round but falling to Middlebury’s Anna Lardner in the second. Riordan commented on the weekend, saying, “Getting to be with everyone in the hotel and bonding was so much fun and it was awesome to be back on the court! Definitely savoring every moment in my senior year- happy to be here!”
The Mules will return to action on Sunday October 1st for their first dual team match, at home against Endicott College.
