Year 3
It has been another varied and enjoyable week in Year 3. As usual, the children have worked hard and embraced all of the learning opportunities available to them. In English lessons, the children have begun to write our very own Legend of Old Leigh. They have generated descriptive vocabulary in order to create vivid character and setting descriptions for their story opening. Next, they went on to write an engaging piece of dialogue to demonstrate how an author shows character interactions within text. In our Layered Reading lesson, we have been developing the ability to follow a theme within the non-fiction text, London. The children were able to use the index to locate page references where information about bridges could be found and then to gather evidence about how these have changed in both quantity and purpose. Maths lessons have focused on consolidating the children’s knowledge of 2-D shapes and the vocabulary needed to describe their properties. The children then went on to work with 3D shapes: interpreting visual representations before building the three-dimensional objects. In science, our plant investigations have continued: children have been taking turns to water and measure the plants. We have begun to build a results table for analysis in the weeks to come. New learning this week has focused on pollination. Much fun was had as the children imitated being bees and other pollinators as they moved from flower to flower. Geography this week, gave the children the opportunity to look in more detail at our very own River Thames. They have identified its source and tracked the features it displays on its way to the estuary we call home. Their knowledge was illustrated as they drew and annotated diagrams showing the river’s upper, middle and lower courses.

Year 4
As another week comes to a close, Year 4 have celebrated many learning successes. In English, the children have used their knowledge of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to plan, write and edit a sequel to the story. They used their storytelling skills to describe the characters and setting, included a dilemma and a resolution where the problem is solved. As mathematicians, some groups have been practising rounding numbers while others have practised multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 in order to convert between metric units of measure. Some groups have solved problems involving metric units of measure and have practised reading measures using a variety of scales. Science involved making a functioning switch as part of an electrical circuit. After identifying the purpose of a switch, the children worked in groups to make one of their own, correctly using the provided resources. They then tested it within a circuit. When a problem arose, they had to find solutions in order to make the bulb light up. As geographers, the children worked in small groups and had great fun creating their own theme parks - money was no object! Using large grids, they produced their own maps and included a wide range of rides and attractions. They reinforced their knowledge of 4-figure grid references by plotting features at specific points across their grids. They further demonstrated their mathematical skills by calculating the total cost of all of the rides and attractions within their theme park.

Year 5
Another busy week has flown by and we’re already a third of the way through 2026! In English, we have focused on explanation texts. The children explored a range of examples, identified key features, and compared their effectiveness. Linking to our science topic on space, they have been learning about black holes - gathering facts and generating questions for further research. They ended the week by writing introductions, ready to develop these into full, creative explanations next week. We have also begun our final Layered Reading text, Dragon Mountain. The children enjoyed meeting the characters and made predictions about the ending, which have been sealed in envelopes to be opened once we finish the book. In maths, we revisited multiplication and division. The children began by reviewing factors and practising formal multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers using their times tables knowledge. We then moved on to multiplying decimals, finishing the week by revising formal methods and explaining their reasoning. Science this week focused on the rotation and revolution of the planets. The children defined the difference between the two and compared how long each planet takes to rotate and orbit the Sun. In Connected Curriculum, the children deepened their understanding of the Mayan civilisation of Central America. We explored the meanings of civilisation and culture, then examined artefacts to hypothesise what they revealed about Mayan life, work and celebrations. Learning about the region’s rich ecology and natural resources helped the children understand how the Maya developed a thriving civilisation, achieving advances in building, learning and trade. We then looked more closely at farming, exploring the crops they grew, the methods they used and how these were adapted to their environment.

Year 6
Year 6 have enjoyed another varied and engaging week of learning, demonstrating curiosity and thoughtful reflection across the curriculum. In maths, pupils have been developing their understanding of scales and graphs. They have practised interpreting data accurately, applying these skills to a range of problems and real-life contexts. In science, pupils learned about the components of blood, exploring the roles of red and white blood cells, platelets and plasma. To bring this learning to life, they even created their own “blood smoothie,” representing each component in a fun and memorable way! In RE, pupils considered the impact of John Wesley and his role in challenging racism, alongside learning about the life of Edward Colston. These discussions encouraged pupils to reflect thoughtfully on historical actions and their consequences, developing a deeper understanding of morality and social responsibility. As part of our Connected Curriculum hook, pupils were introduced to 18 of the most significant Britons, sparking interest and discussion about their contributions to society. In addition to this, each pupil selected a British location to research further, beginning an exciting new strand of independent enquiry.

Sports News
Southend Tennis Competitions
Last week, children from Years 4 and 6 competed in tennis competitions. The children competed as a team of four and their scores were combined to make a team total. All of the children grew in confidence throughout the sessions and made great improvements from the start to the finish. There were fast serves, exciting rallies and powerful shots in a fantastic day of tennis. The Year 4 team finished in 4th place, winning two, drawing one and losing two of their matches. The Year 6 team finished in 3rd place, winning four and losing one of their matches. Well done to our tennis teams!
Year 5/6 Quad Kids
Well done to the four boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 who represented West Leigh in the Quad Kids competition on Wednesday. Each child competed in a 75m sprint, howler throw, long jump and 600m run. The children from West Leigh performed superbly in each of the events. In total, twenty-two schools competed and West Leigh narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in 4th place. We are very proud of our athletes! Well done, West Leigh!
Portico Multi-Sports Event
Children from across Portico Academy Trust participated in our annual sports festival on Tuesday. There was a mixture of nerves and excitement ahead of the day; however, the nerves were soon blown away as the children competed in various sporting activities such as sitting volleyball, archery, kurling and benchball. Many of the children received certificates for displaying the School Games values (determination, passion, teamwork, honesty, respect and self-belief). Staff from all five schools were so impressed with how the children supported each other and competed as a team, despite having only just met. Well done to all of our participants!
Dragonball Competition
It was the return of Dragonball today as children from Year 5 competed in glorious sunshine! Dragonball combines elements of sports such as dodgeball, handball, basketball, netball and tag-rugby. Teams play as many rounds as they can in seven minutes. A round ends when all five balls on the pitch have been scored. Goals are scored by throwing or kicking and the ball can be carried in just about any way! The team with the most rounds won are the winners of the match. The children were absolutely exhausted by the end of their sessions! Mr Markham cannot wait for it to return next year! Our competition team played eight games and finished in 7th place and our festival team competed in seven games, experiencing lots of goals, diving saves and weaving runs from one end of the pitch to the other! Well done Dragonball players!
Inspirational Person - Sir Ernest Shackleton
We were delighted to receive so many inspiring surfboard designs following last half term’s Showbie Challenge. The entries clearly reflected our Golden Values, and we are impressed with the effort and creativity shown. A small selection of the designs is shared below, but everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves. Prizes have been awarded to all participants — well done! We hope to see more fantastic entries again this half term. This half term, children have been learning about the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton and how he demonstrated the value of integrity during his expedition to Antarctica. When his ship, The Endurance, became trapped in the ice, Shackleton faced an incredibly difficult decision. He could continue pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming the first person to cross Antarctica, or he could abandon the mission to ensure his crew returned home safely. Integrity means doing the right thing — even when it is difficult, even when no one is watching, and even when it costs you something. Shackleton showed true integrity by giving up his dream and choosing people over success. He told his crew, “Our goal now is simple: everyone comes home alive.” Thanks to his leadership and integrity, every member of the Endurance crew was rescued. Showbie Challenge Although Ernest Shackleton did not receive a medal or award for his expedition, his integrity is what made his story truly remarkable. Your challenge is to design an “Integrity Award” that you would present to Shackleton. Your design must include:
- A title for the award
- A picture or symbol
- A short explanation explaining why he deserves it
We can’t wait to see your thoughtful and creative designs! These can be uploaded to Showbie and some blank templates have been saved there to help you if needed.
