About Dr. Park Spring 2025

Since we had a successful study abroad program to Korea in the spring of 2024 and 2025 (traveling portion in summer), we are doing another study abroad program to Japan next semester (2026 Explore Japan). The program will be brimming with a wide range of exciting activities. If you like to learn more about the 2026 Explore Japan Program, please click the link here - 2026 Explore Japan. And if you like to learn about Explore Korea, please click her - SOAN300 (We haven't decided when Explore Korea will be offered again - possibly 2027, though.)

Study Abroad Program - 2025 Explore Korea
Explore Korea, 2025

Hello! This is Dr. Park (or Professor Park). I will be teaching SO100 Intro to Sociology, SOAN300 Explore Korea/K-Pop & Beyond as a study abroad program this semester. And I will be teaching 304 The Family and SOAN362 Research Methods in the fall of 2025.

I am always excited about a new semester because I could demonstrate how sociology can help you understand yourself better. Sociology can be a useful framework to make sense of your mundane life since it examines how the social world influences the way you think, feel, and act.

In addition to teaching sociology, I have always tried to provide a wide variety of hands-on activities for Washburn students. This semester is no exception. I am planning to have numerous on-campus cultural events such as K-festival, origami folding paper cranes, and food adventures. So, please pay attention to my on-campus event website.

2024 Summer - MBC (Korea's Major Broadcasting Company), Tokyo, Nagasaki, and Seoul
I was in Korea this summer, 2022. On the left, I visited HYBE, Multinational Entertainment Company, and the BTS museum. BTS belongs to this company. On the right, I am standing in front of Mr. Tall Guy with embedded 50+ countries' flags in Wongok-dong, Ansan. My research revolved around a growing number of foreign migrant workers in Korea.

My goal for this semester is to bring more K-culture on campus. I would like to work on K-festival@Washburn with my students in October (tentatively 10/09). At the K-festival, students will have the opportunity to play K-games including honeycomb and flipping cards along with tasting K-food (Fall 2024).

I also made short documentaries which are related to sociology. Here's the preview of my very first documentary which was made in 2016. The film was displayed at a KC's local film festival!! And my research was on NPR in 2016. Please enjoy reading my story on Shake Shack Burger Fever in Korea. This story is a nice addition to McDonald's in East Asia by James Watson.

In addition, I will be working on my research projects including multicultural towns in Korea & Japan and migrant workers in Korea & Japan.
