Student Spotlight: Jacqueline Palmer

What are your secret survival strategies for your online graduate program?

My biggest survival strategy has been building simple, consistent routines and keeping myself a priority. I am currently completing my culminating project and working with an amazing group. The challenge is that we are located in 5 time zones and all balancing day jobs, family commitments, etc. During our first meeting, we established a regular weekly meeting schedule and use shared resources in Microsoft Teams to stay organized and aligned.  Outside of academics, planning ahead has been essential. Weekly meal prep and making time to get outside help me maintain balance, focus, and energy throughout the program.

Helpful Tips for Online Graduate Students

  • Set a routine schedule: Block dedicated times each week for coursework and group meetings and treat them as if you are attending in person.
  • Create an earlier personal deadline: I aim to finish assignments by Friday instead of Sunday to reduce stress and keep weekends flexible.
  • Centralize collaboration: Use shared tools like Microsoft Teams to store documents, timelines, create file naming conventions, and house notes in one place.
  • Choose the right AI tool for the task: Getting familiar with what AI tools work best for the right situation is key. For example, I've learned that I prefer using Google Gemini for images and graphics that need to be generated for visuals that support the assignments.
  • Meal prep weekly: Planning meals ahead eliminates daily decision-making and frees up mental space for schoolwork.
  • Get outside regularly: Fresh air and movement including daily walks and 10-minute yoga videos make a noticeable difference in focus and well-being. This really helps for days I am not able to make it to the gym

Student Spotlight: Areejit Banerjee

Written By: Areejit Banerjee, MSAI student

How have you used your experience from your graduate courses in your current position?

Areejit Banerjee is the Senior Manager of Data Protection Strategy & Product Trust at Carfax and a graduate student in AI Management and Policy at Purdue University. His recent work includes high-impact contributions to the OWASP Automated Threats project , a formal policy brief submitted to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) regarding data misappropriation and AI-driven scraping , and technical publications on scraping defense and infrastructure risk for industry gatekeepers such as Corporate Compliance Insights , CircleID , and HackerNoon. He focuses on the critical intersection of AI-enabled automated threats, data protection strategy, and public policy reform.  Areejit’s work highlights the immediate real-world ROI of the MS in AI Management and Policy:

  • Global Standard Leadership (OWASP): Areejit is a named contributor for the OWASP Automated Threat (OAT) Ontology where he is leveraging Purdue's curriculum to redefine international security standards. Beyond successfully proposing the redefinition of "Scraping" (OAT-011) and updating global countermeasure recommendations, he is spearheading the integration of SMS Pumping into the 2026 Handbook. By architecting critical metrics for "economic harm" and "ROI erosion" and codifying new protections against Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT), Areejit’s work as a formally recognized contributor has been accepted for the upcoming global release, setting a new benchmark for industrial fraud prevention.
  • Federal Policy Impact (White House OSTP): : Areejit submitted a policy brief to the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy (Docket OSTP-TECH-2025-0100) to protect the legal vacuum allowing industrial-scale free-riding of proprietary data assets . This work was academically peer-reviewed and vetted by the SCLA 52200 cohort at Purdue University before his formal submission to federal authorities. His proposal, which received critical feedback from both faculty and fellow students during its development, advocates for federal reforms to address "Infrastructure Theft" and the lack of durable, nationwide standards for protecting investment-intensive data.
  • Original Technical Contributions: Areejit authored a proprietary Layered Defense framework designed to safeguard data assets from AI-driven exploitation. This framework combining device fingerprinting and behavioral gating has been widely disseminated through technical publications like HackerNoon and synthesized for executive governance in Corporate Compliance Insights.
  • Vetted Thought Leadership: His work on the "Free-Rider" problem and data misappropriation is now published across major industry gatekeepers, including CircleID and SSRN, bridging the gap between technical architecture and regulatory compliance.

Student Spotlight: Joshua Paul

Joshua Paul, a current student in the MSAI program, joined the Purdue National Defense Society and has been working on two AI-powered tools for the United States Navy, building on what he's learned throughout his degree. If you would like to learn more about his research, Joshua posted on LinkedIn about his work on two Navy SBIRs focused on AI:

  • AQUA: Transforms undersea warfare testing from weeks of manual work into 24-hour, AI-driven intelligence.
  • STARBOARD: Uses NLP, knowledge graphs, and LLMs to accelerate Navy system interoperability and mission readiness

Joshua is preparing to travel to San Diego to attend AFCEA West Conference this week where he will be demoing one of the apps for the SBIR program at the Navy Small Business Booth and the Google Public Sector Booth.

tips for taking exams

Contributions by: Kiley Kallenberger, Success Coach

Exams can often feel overwhelming, but a few simple strategies can go a long way to make them more manageable. Below you will find some of my favorite practical tips for approaching your next exam with confidence.

  1. Scan the Exam: Check to see how many questions are included and how much time you’ll have for each question to help pace yourself. For example, if there are 25 questions, and you have an hour to take the exam, you’ll have about 2 and half minutes per question.
  2. Start Easy: Review the questions right away and knock out the ones you feel confident about and then circle back to the more difficult questions with the time left. If you get through the “easier” questions first... it will allow you even more time per question on the more difficult ones.
  3. Be Direct: For written responses, avoid skirting around the question. Phrase your answers to start with a direct answer in the very first sentence, and the following sentences should be your evidence. For example, “The key solution to X is due to...” and then be direct with all your rationale to support that very first sentence. After you’re done with the first attempt to the questions, read them back and ask yourself, Did you answer exactly what they asked and do all your sentences support your opening statement?
  4. Breakdown Complex Questions: If you find yourself taking too much time on an exam question, try breaking the question into sections, taking each section one at a time.

📖The Dharma of AI: Timeless Wisdom for Digital Ethics by Alok Chaturvedi (Purdue faculty) explores how ancient dharmic principles can guide ethical decision‑making in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. Drawing on his experience in both AI development and Eastern philosophy, Chaturvedi offers a framework for building and using technology in ways that promote balance, responsibility, and human well‑being rather than harm or exploitation

👋New Advisor Joining the Team: Jessica Joya

I am excited to join the team as an Academic Advisor for the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. I’ll be working with students with the last name  A-L. I look forward to working closely with students as they pursue their academic goals, and I’m especially eager to build individualized relationships, support each student’s unique needs, and help them feel confident and empowered as they navigate their program.   A native of the West Lafayette area and a proud Purdue alumna, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Management with a minor in Organizational Leadership and Supervision, as well as my Master of Science in Higher Education with a focus on student affairs from Purdue Global. Before returning to Purdue, I gained valuable experience in various social service roles within the non-profit and government sectors. Since 2018, I have served in several positions at Purdue, including Student Engagement Coordinator for the Honors College, Student Success Specialist within the Computer and Information Technology Department, and most recently, Director for Student Success in the College of Veterinary Medicine.   Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my teenage daughter, Lilliana, and our two golden retrievers, Maggie and Finnley. In my free time, you can often find me reading a good book, catching up with family and friends, or serving as my daughter’s personal chauffeur.
