Principal's report

This week, our students have taken over the Principal's report.

Pathways to Action

"We are creating a foundation of kids from Mullum High to help orchestrate positive change in our school and our community. We are working with The Mullumbimby District Neighbourhood Centre and they are helping us to keep the teachers accountable in making sure the youth voice still stands. From our big Connect and Thrive Event last term over 100 students identified 7 key themes that we would like to address moving forward. These were Safety, Connection, Affordability, Transport, Belonging, Youth Spaces, Respect. We want stories and intergenerational sharing outside of educational topics. We want to know how we can break down racism and create greater equity within our community. At our Pathways to Action event, we heard from Codie McCarthy who used personal stories to engage us in thinking more deeply about leadership as a shared responsibility, and showed us way of getting our message across with story sharing, creativity and cultural respect. We want to build on this further and work with other local Aboriginal people to make this happen. We have double checked the key themes that came through and what needed changing. We reflected on these and brainstormed doable changes. We’ve looked over it. It looks great and now we need to make the change. We are going to find the money to make the changes we need in our school and we plan to advocate out in the community for further change. We found that people in our community, particularly young people, want their voice to mean something. We want to be acknowledged and heard, to feel connected and safe. We want our voices to become actions and are worried that it may not happen. We recognise that some things may not be able to happen, but small, local doable actions can be supported by the Mullum High Staff and the community. Hopefully in the future, we can get the ear of the council as well. Our big challenge is getting everyone on the same page. We want to find the true change makers in our school. Let’s get together our change makers from across the year groups. We think that as students and young people we can get the most traction in the belonging, respect and inclusion spaces. This could mean putting energy into a school talent show, or a stall at the Farmers Market where we can sell our Ag Farm or Community Garden produce. This would also let us share our change stories with the local community. We have lots of energy around having fun, building connection, creating safer spaces and making things better. Our smaller group have found three youth led initiatives that we’d like to explore further.

  • A school-community garden project connecting young people, the school and the farmers market.
  • A peer-led overnight school sleepover experience focused on stories, performances, connection and belonging.
  • A youth and community driven community fundraising event to support youth-led initiatives.

Through previous events, we have observed kids expressing genuine hope and excitement about our cause for change. We saw a lot of engagement and expressions of all kinds. Angry stories, sadness and hopeful stories as well. We hope more of our peers will bring their stories to our weekly meeting. Keep an eye out on Sentral announcements or Year group Google Classrooms for more details."

Hugo - Year 11 "The student council this term was excellent! We got to talk first about the problems of the hazards and then our previous questions were explained. After that, we started to list some ideas and vote on them, but they had to be a simple doable idea that could be done with/for the community. The hospitality was excellent and they (Codie and the adults from the Mullum Neighbourhood Centre and Office of Youth) were patient and told us about their stories such as the fire." Alon - Year 8

Thank you! - Mrs Bree Harvey-Bice, PRINCIPAL

Library News

The library staff is always looking to encourage our young readers with various creative displays. This week, the theme is Books Make Life Colourful! There is a great selection of books on all kinds of topics. Students are encouraged to ask for advice and to borrow books on a regular basis, including during the school holidays.

Did you know that NBA players like Lebron James or Victor Wembanyama are known for their love of reading? They are often seen with a large book, and they have a habit to read before bed. These players exemplify that reading is not just a pastime but a valuable pursuit that enriches their lives and contributes to their success both on and off the basketball court. It's worth a try!

Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages

GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY?  If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE?  School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.

As you are already aware, NSW high schools have banned the use of mobile phones. Please support our school and do not contact your child directly during the day as it is a distraction and would put them in breach of school rules. Our office is happy to pass on messages.

Attendance Matters

Coming to school regularly makes a big difference - it helps you keep up with your learning, stay connected, and give yourself the best chance to succeed. We're excited to announce that this year, we're recognising students who show a strong commitment to being at school. At the end of each term, all students with 95% attendance or higher will go into the draw to win a $500 gift voucher. Two vouchers will be awarded every term so there's plenty of chances to win. Vouchers can be used at a range of stores, including JB Hi-FiFoot LockerCity Beach, EB Games and plenty of other leading retailers. So come to school each day, stay consistent, and you could be in the draw to win $500!

Careers News

Year 10 Work Experience is in Week 2 in Term 3 (next term!)

Students that are not attending the Year 10 Snow Trip, are encouraged to engage in work experience.  The information pack with the required Student Placement Record form has been given to students.  Many students are starting to explore options, and it is a great way to try a career/industry that they may not have thought about.  It is important to note that students cannot be in paid work during the week, unless they are completing a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, and are only covered with insurance with the work experience approved by the school.  For students attending school, there will be a supervised class.  Should you have any questions, please contact Leanne Clarkson, Careers Adviser.

For all careers questions, come and speak with Ms Clarkson at school or visit Mullumbimby High School careers website - https://mullumbimbycareers.com/
