From Imperial Throne to Communist Command: Beijing's Political Evolution
Our first stop on the trip was Beijing. Upon arrival, we learned that it is the political center of China, serving as the capital and the seat of the central government. It is home to key institutions such as the Great Hall of the People, where the National People’s Congress meets, as well as Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council. The city is also historically significant as the former capital of several dynasties, including the Ming and Qing, which adds to its enduring role as a center of power. While in the city, we visited Tiananmen Square, a historic site known for its political significance, including major protests and demonstrations such as the 1989 pro-democracy movement. I was surprised to learn that the square can hold up to one million people. The Imperial Palace is right by Tiananmen Square which was once housed emperors and served as the political and ceremonial heart of China for nearly five centuries. It was filled with thousands of tourists, both from within China and from around the world. The experience was truly amazing.
