My Dream Job
For me, the perfect job is to be a veterinarian, like Dr. Megan Beauchamp – one of the staff veterinarians at the VCA Animal Hospital in Leon Springs. When she was young and lived in Austin, she had a passion for animals and sciences, and applied that to her life going forward. She started off as an office assistant at a local practice in Austin and moved all the way up to a vet tech, until she went to Texas A&M where she got both her B.S in Biomed (2010) and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM – 2014). She practiced out of state for about a year then came back to Austin, only to move here to San Antonio to now practice over at VCA Leon Springs, specializing in “feline medicine, internal medicine cases, and client education”. That said, I chose her because when I read about her on the website, it showed me that I’m on the right track in a way, and it makes me eager to keep pushing forward to ultimately pursue my dream job.
The Ideal Location
Personally, I’m not big on change, so the ideal location to be a vet would be here in San Antonio, Texas. Although it is a hot state in the summertime, which isn’t a bad downside, you have areas that are lively alongside a bunch more attractions, such as the riverwalk or even just neighborhood parks. Sure, it’s hot and all but I’m already used to it all and I feel comfortable here in my hometown – which I believe to be one of the more important factors when working. If you’re not comfortable, then you’re not going to enjoy the job, let alone your dream job; being uncomfortable can ruin the whole experience. On top of this, a blog off of 'SpiritDog' shows us that San Antonio has about a 54% dog ownership in the city, which can be great news because it means a lot of pets to care for. Some environmental factors I considered were temperature but also if it’s a populated area. It’s hot in Texas and it’s fairly populated in San Antonio, based on personal experience, but as mentioned previously not bad whatsoever. That said, this job does exist in this location especially due to the relatively high number of pet owners here, all looking for a way to keep their furry friends happy and healthy.
My Personal Statement
I love seeing animals, but I love to see them more when they’re happy and in great shape. The idea of being able to be part of a community that can do these things for animals, small or large, is one of the greater reasons that motivates me to be a veterinarian. But the underlying reason is simply to make others happier, especially to have them know that their best friend (dog, cat, bird, etc.) is in good hands. That said, if it weren’t for my mom, then I probably would’ve been stuck not knowing where I would want to work. She has pushed me beyond my limits but also works aside me to help me understand what I want. I believe that qualities like these, that can show I work hard and push myself to be my best, work hand-in-hand with my others, like social ability and friendliness in order to make me a well-rounded off and successful veterinarian. In order to achieve my dream job, I will make sure to gain volunteer hours to better my chances for vet school whilst also networking to create a better overall image of myself. After I’ve gotten my biology degree, I will go to Texas A&M for their vet-med program, where I’ll continue to push through until I get my own Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) in order to pursue my dream job.
