'American Constitution' Screening

may 21

Go back in time to see the foundation of freedom. The Town of St. James and the Friends of the Library are hosting this special docudrama screening. The American Constitution brings the debates, personalities and high-stakes decisions of 1787 Philadelphia to life. It’s a chance to experience the story behind the framework that shaped the nation in a more personal and cinematic way. Stick around after the screening for a live Q&A with the director, who will offer insight into both the filmmaking process and the history behind the subject matter. There's no admission fee for SJP residents. Seating is limited, though — advance registration is required.

Watercolor on Canvas Workshop

may 29-30

Sometimes a new surface changes everything. Stepping Up for Arts is offering this 2-day workshop that explores painting on canvas instead of traditional paper, opening up new possibilities in texture, scale and technique. It’s a different experience from what many artists are used to... and one that can shift the way you approach the creative process altogether. The class will be led by local artist Kristen Dorsey, whose work has been featured throughout the area. Expect a hands-on, encouraging environment designed for artists who want to experiment and try a fresh approach. Click the button below to learn more and reserve your spot!

Garden Tour Tickets (Porch Sale)

may 11

Your ticket to springtime inspiration is down to 1 final porch sale. The upcoming tour will open the gates to 5 standout gardens along Harbormaster Drive, each filled with creative landscaping ideas, lush plantings and details worth slowing down to admire. Along the way, guests can also explore live demos, gardening advice from local experts, a plant sale and a raffle. Choose from a morning or afternoon tour session. Admission to either option is $25 per person. An upcoming porch sale will serve as the last opportunity to pick up tickets in person before the event. Meet the Author

may 14

Things are about to get a little hot... and not just because there’s a firefighter involved. At this upcoming Friends of the Library event, award-winning author Helen Aitken will discuss her latest novel, Love at First Spark — a Southern-inspired mix of romance, suspense, missing inventions and opposites-attract chemistry. The story follows a fire safety scientist and her firefighter neighbor as they team up to uncover sabotage at her company. Expect humor, storytelling and a behind-the-scenes look at the writing process from an author who clearly enjoys having fun with her characters. It's FREE to attend but seating is limited (advance registration recommended).

Fallen Hero Ceremony

may 16

Come help keep the memories of our fallen heroes alive. The Fallen Hero Ceremony returns for its fifth year, bringing veterans, first responders, community leaders and neighbors together for a morning centered on remembrance and respect. Through tributes, remarks and traditional honors, this event creates space to recognize those who served and sacrificed. The ceremony is hosted by Veterans Memorial Reef, an organization that honors service men and women in a uniquely lasting way by laying them to rest at sea, where they become part of a living reef that continues to support marine life for generations to come.

Photo Club Meeting

may 11

Consider this a tune-up for your creative lens. Photographer and educator Joe Edelman is returning with a presentation that digs into the thinking behind strong images: how creativity develops, what shapes your perspective and why some photos connect more than others. It’s geared toward helping photographers move past simply taking pictures and start seeing things differently. The meeting also includes a still life photo critique, where members compare approaches, swap ideas and talk through what works (and what doesn’t). Whether you shoot on a phone or with a full camera setup, it’s an easy way to recharge your inspiration and sharpen your eye a bit.

Smart Home Seminar

may 19

Give your home a few new tricks. Learn some easy ways to make everyday life feel a little safer and more convenient during St. James NEST's next "Aging in Place" session. Chris Hudson of Connected Home, Inc. will share practical examples and simple technology solutions that don’t require you to be especially tech-savvy to appreciate. From small upgrades to clever tools you may not have thought about before, the presentation is designed to spark ideas you can actually picture using in your own home. Admission is free, but advance registration is required to save your spot. Reserve your seat at the button below!
