DISEGNO spring 2023 - UNDERGRADUATE 1st year studio - mike rice competition

STUDIO OVERVIEW

This project explores architecture’s ability to develop an evolutionary building type for the community needs of urban dwellers with programming and related spatial configurations that evolve in time as it reweaves the fabric of its site and context—first investigating its fabric and the ways ‘mat-building' types can repair it, then, designing new types of 'mat-building' that engages architecture as the Renaissance art of disegno: drawing, lines, nature, and invention. Throughout the process, your design thinking and making will continue building on our creative problem-solving method and analogical reasoning, this time drawing from design in nature with the so-called constructal law to help develop our new mat-building type for the 21st century whose circulation system and the architectural promenade it frames evolve through time.
