About Us

FOLKS. Theatre, co-founded by Max & Holly Hopkins - Two queer and neurodivergent siblings from Brighton who collaborate with local creatives. Our method is driven by lived experiences and an human-centric approach to create contemporary projects that celebrate differences . Magical realism thrums through our work, with references to myths and legends from around the globe, to create symbolic projects that reflect the world around us. Our process holds the value of people and strives for accessibility and community. We use where we have been and what we know to create authentic stories.

Meet The FOLKS

HOlly HOPKINS (SHE/HEr)

Creative director

Holly’s process fosters a human centric approach and sets out to achieve work that is visceral, unflinchingly human and walks the line between magic and realism. She says ‘cultivating a welcoming rehearsal room is my top priority, it gives space to be bold, take risks and create meaningful work.’  Holly studied World Performance at East 15 acting school. Here they developed their directing and devising methodology. Holly’s process is influenced by their work with Ramiro Silveira’s Playground, Madeline Dahm’s Bodyology, James Macdonald's Directing masterclass, Filmmaking at AUB and Crosspolination’s theatre lab.

Max HOPKINS (He/they)

Creative director

Max’s process allows people to bring themselves to the room. Allowing for fun and risk taking to be the centre of the work they create. Max’s work allows for conversations over the world we live in through his physical way of working. Using the body is paramount when creating the work. Max studied Acting and Theatre making at BN1 Arts in Brighton. Then later became a member of the National Youth Theatre company. He used his training to develop his writing and directorial skills, creating work with fellow peers in a collaborative setting. They strive to make change within the work they create in a political and moral sense.
