8TH MAY 2026. ISSUE 400

🎉 ISSUE 400! 🎉

Head's Welcome

Dear Families, Even though it has been a shorter week than usual thanks to the bank holiday, we have certainly been busy! Before we dive into our weekly news, we have a very exciting milestone to share. This is officially our 400th weekly newsletter! Reaching 400 editions is a wonderful reminder of just how much we have shared over the years with our community. Here’s to the next 100! Firstly, our Year 11 students have begun their first formal public exams this week. We are immensely proud of the mature, focused, and calm approach they have shown. Additionally, all our Year 11 and 12 leavers were treated to a celebration afternoon tea this afternoon; there was plenty of shirt signing, cake eating and photos taken for memories. Our assembly today was another highlight of the week. Our 6th Form students took the lead and delivered a deeply thoughtful and important presentation on what Victory in Europe (VE) Day means. Their teamwork, confidence, and presentation skills were brilliant. Huge well done to everyone involved for starting our weekend on such a reflective and inspiring note. Lastly, communication is so important in our small school community, and we want to make sure you never miss a thing. Please take a moment to join our digital communication groups via the QR codes below this message.

  • Whole School: Please sign up for the Canbury School WhatsApp Announcement group to receive all our key notices and weekly updates.
  • Year 11 Families: We highly recommend joining our Exams-Specific WhatsApp group. Miss Buchanan will be using this space to send out timely reminders, schedules, and vital information to support both you and your child throughout this exam season.

I hope you all have a restful, happy, and sunny weekend ahead. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday.

We have been enjoying more athletics practise at Kingsmeadow recently! We really love using these facilities to learn new skills and expand on others. Well done everyone!

Y9 Assembly

Well done to Lexi, Sofia and Elizabeth who hosted our assembly last week and taught us about the dog meat trade. They explained the scale of this practice, the misunderstood believes behind it and the charities that are working to help. These charities inlcude: No to Dog Meat Trade, Humane Society International, SOI Dog Foundation and Four Paws. There were also some questions asked, with answers below:

  • What was the British Got Talent year from the video shown? The show was from 2020 (video link below)
  • There are other meat trades that we should be aware of, can you tell us more about them? Four Paws has an excellent website hihglighting the other meat trades that are a cause of concern (see link below)

This week we launched Thursday lunchtimes as a Calm Zone in Wellbeing. This means the room will be a place for calm, quiet and maybe some chilled out tunes. We hope everyone enjoyed their time and look forward to this weekly session.

WEBINAR: Supporting Neurodivergent Friendships

Free webinar, Wednesday 20th May, 4-5pm BST, live on Zoom by Pooky Knightsmith Many neurodivergent children want friends but can find the unwritten rules confusing, exhausting, or unpredictable in ways their peers don't seem to experience. So I'm running one of my free 7 Quick Wins sessions focused on practical, immediately usable ideas for supporting neurodivergent children's friendships. Ian Hunkin will be joining me too. I'll lead the session and Ian will come in for the questions (or ideas along the way). A big part of what we'll explore is how neurodivergent friendship is often misunderstood. It can look quite different from the neurotypical version, and that's part of why it's so easily missed or judged. We'll think about: What neurodivergent friendship actually looks like in practice How to recognise the friendships that are working, even when they don't look conventional How to support and encourage friendship without trying to make it conform to neurotypical ideals Practical adjustments that reduce the social load at school, at home, and in other settings It's free to attend, and suitable for anyone working with, caring for, or supporting neurodivergent children and young people. Recording goes to everyone who registers, so please book even if you can't make it live.
