What a year! The BRES library and its collection survived the flood of 2023. Thank goodness only a small percentage of books were affected and had to be discarded. We are calling it the "Lucky Library"
The library and the other Allied Arts needed to deliver content and hands on learning without a space and by pushing into classrooms throughout the Boothbay Region. Delivering books to all of the satellite locations took a lot of thought and energy. A huge thank you goes out to all of the teachers, staff, parents, administration, and community members for coming together and delivering an excellent education to our students, and for surviving the winter and spring of 2023!
As of September 1st, 2021, the BRES library houses 13,945 items in its collection with an average age of 2000. An exemplary collection is within 20 years of the current date and contains 20 items per student. BRES has exceeded the exemplary status by having 47 books per student and we are always working to raise the age of the collection with ongoing weeding and acquiring new titles. The library has an inclusive collection featuring 32 % considered "diverse" and 27% with social emotional learning topics. That is 4,451 and 3,790 books respectively!
Only a curious mind attempts to learn. Stories are an insight into parts of the world that are yet unknown to children. A variety of topics present possibilities to children and intrigues them. A book on famous artists, butterflies across the world, or the universe may inspire children to explore further and learn more. It also allows children to learn about different cultures and people.

As a lifelong skill, reading is foundational for learning, enjoyment, and personal growth, and is crucial in the development of new understandings. When a child reads and understands, the world is open to them and that understanding is a key indicator of success in school and in life.
"Reading allows children to understand various emotions. This helps in their emotional and social development since they learn to associate their feelings with words and find a way to express themselves better. Books showcase various characters and perspectives which allows children to be more empathetic. The cause and effect concept in stories helps develop their analytical skills besides encouraging curiosity, which is crucial to learning."
