The Blast City Manager Dennis' Weekly Update | February 12, 2025

Last Friday, our community was shaken by a tragic incident. I hope that you’ve continued to keep them in your thoughts. As opportunities to support the family are announced, we will make sure you’re aware of them.

Celebrating 8th Grade Boys Basketball Team Champions, Lunar New Year & Black History Month

Before heading into the Council Chambers, Ricardo Monroy and Jeff Franco of the Brisbane Parks and Recreation Department joined Coach John and Coach Aaron in presenting the boys with their championship trophies.

It was standing room only at the start of last week’s Council Meeting, which included swearing in newly-appointed but incumbent Planning Commission and Public Art Advisory Committee members, a Lunar New Year Proclamation which was accepted by Anna Lam of Brisbane business Lucky House, a Proclamation designating February 2025 as Black History Month which was accepted by our IDEA Committee Chair Anna Dennis, and commending the Coaches and players of the Brisbane 8th Grade Boys Basketball Team for winning the North County Recreation League Championship game against Burlingame! Thanks to those who were there to join us!

City Clerk Ingrid Padilla swearing in incumbents Douglas Gooding, Roel Funke, and Pamala Sayasane to the Planning Commission, and Diane Glazman, Danielle Kellstedt, and Camille Salmon to the Public Art Advisory Committee (Danielle Kellstedt was not able to be present so will be sworn in prior to the next Public Art Advisory Committee meeting of February 18, 2025).
As a reminder, the IDEA Committee is conducting a MLK Jr. Service Project through the end of February. Drop shampoo, conditioner, soap, and bathroom tissue off at the Annex or City Hall.

Feb. 6 City Council Meeting Highlights

At their meeting of February 6, 2025, the City Council:

  • Directed staff to schedule, in the upcoming months, the first of what are anticipated to be four to five public meetings and forums to discuss implementation of district elections in Brisbane. These meetings are expected to be held over the course of approximately 4-6 months once the initial hearing is scheduled. The Council did not approve district elections for the City; rather, these meetings are part of the districting process to engage the community on the topic, produce draft maps, and other such activities prior to adoption. The Council could, during the process, choose not to implement district elections.
  • Directed staff to consider projects such as renovations of the Community Center, water distribution upgrades at the Marina, and a sidewalk project for Bayshore Blvd. for submittal to Congressman Mullin’s office for inclusion in the FY 2026 appropriation request process. Staff will return with details on these potential projects at the March 6 meeting

What a Turnout at Saturday's Habitat Restoration Day!

50 volunteers were up on Callippe Hill Saturday morning doing what the cover of the booklet (put together by Ariel Cherbowsky Corkidi, Executive Director and Aspen Garrido, Ecological Restoration & Education Specialist of San Bruno Mountain Watch) stated - Stuffin’ Lupine Seeds (host plant of the Mission Blue butterfly), Pluggin’ Plantain (host plant of the Bay Checkerspot butterfly), and Bustin’ Broom (an invasive plant aggressively spreading into native vegetation, including San Bruno Mountain grasslands). Several times each year, the City’s Open Space and Ecology Committee and staff partner with San Bruno Mountain Watch to host these weeding and planting events, with volunteers leaving with a sense of accomplishment, not to mention a Julie's sandwich and free t-shirt, thanks to the generous sponsorship of these events by South San Francisco Scavenger Co. Great effort, everyone!

The 23rd Annual Artists' Evening of Sharing was One for the Books

It was a full house at Mission Blue Saturday evening for the 23rd Annual Artists’ Evening of Sharing…what a wonderful event thanks to the hard work of Beth Grossman to gather 20 incredible Artists and make sure their talents are put on full display. Thank you to Nicole and Sara of Parks and Rec for helping support this event, as well as JoeJoe and Erin for their lighting expertise, and Sharon and Gaby for making sure everything sounded great for the Artists! It really does take a village. We sure are blessed with the one we have.

Southern Portion of Bay Trail in Brisbane Closed Thru End of February

The Bay Trail south of the Shore campus will be closed until 2/28. The property manager has been working with Public Works to install a City/State required monitoring system for the public waterline that is on their campus.

The San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission (BCDC) took no issue with the closure as there are signs posted that reroute the Bay Trail temporarily around the north side of the Shore campus, connecting back to the Trail on the western end.

Lipman Courts Closed Following 2/10 Hazmat Incident

Speaking of closures, on Tuesday afternoon, NCFA Crews along with officers from the Brisbane Police Dept. were on-site at 1 Solano Ave. following reports of a chemical-type smell. The first arriving fire company found a 5-gallon bucket of an unknown substance that had been kicked over near the tennis courts, giving off a chemical-type smell. Students and staff at the school were required to stay indoors and to shelter in place. Students were allowed to leave the school at dismissal time, but were required to use an alternate route, away from the incident.

Hazardous materials response team firefighters were able to analyze the liquid substance and determined it to be an ignitable liquid, but non-hazardous. Fire companies remained on-scene for over four hours to safely assess the incident and clean up the material. There were no injuries to any of the firefighters.

With residents in the area still being able to smell the odor on Tuesday morning, 2/11, Public Works made contact with the school's maintenance staff, who are actively working to clean up any remaining discharge. Until the cleanup is complete, Public Works has decided to close the Lipman Courts, with the closure expected to last 2-3 days. We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to reopening the Lipman Courts when the incident has been fully mitigated.

Note: the County offers residents free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off appointments for containers that are 5 gallons or less in size.

You can also sign up for upcoming household hazardous waste drop-off event notifications.

Bayshore PG&E Night Work Completed this Week, Free Compost Still Available

The area on Bayshore between Old County and Valley has been under construction for the past 6 weeks, with PG&E conducting routine maintenance on their gas line. Crews had their last night of work this past Thursday, with the roadway repaved yesterday. They will be working through punchlist items today and are expected to conclude the project by the end of this week. Flaggers will be out today at Bayshore and Valley assisting motorists during periods of heavy traffic. Note: the fiber optic construction taking place at the northern and southern city limits on Bayshore will be ongoing for several weeks so please mind any lane closures at those two locations.

PG&E crews have started moving out equipment from the staging area under Tunnel Ave. Bridge. It's easier now to pick up compost, which can be found under the tarp. Please bring your own bucket and shovel, and thank you again to SSF Scavenger for providing it for community members' gardens!
