Otselic Valley first grade students recently became “contraction surgeons” during a creative hands-on grammar lesson in Mrs. Stoklosa’s classroom. The activity gave students a fun and memorable way to learn how two words can be combined to form contractions. Students began by working in teams across four “surgery rooms,” matching pairs of words to the correct contractions. Once their matches were complete, it was time for surgery. Wearing lab coats, gloves, facemasks, and hospital IDs, students carefully removed unnecessary letters from word pairs and joined the remaining parts together to create contractions. Each new contraction was then “mended” with a band-aid apostrophe.
After completing their work, students received awards recognizing their excellent efforts as young doctors.
A special thank you to Mrs. Stoklosa for creating this imaginative lesson, and to the OV PTO for purchasing the class set of lab coats that helps make this engaging tradition possible year after year.
