FILM: TRAIN TO BUSAN

Sublime recommends.....

Train to Busan is a Korean zombie movie about a father and daughter duo traveling to Busan to see the girls mother.

It's a movie that shows different types of people in the same situation and how they influence each other during that, make decisions and how their morals change throughout the movie.

Train of Busan makes great use of their sets and used them to create a sense of urgency and anxiety, for example a majority of the movie is shot inside of a train, the small and claustrophobic spacing of the train combined with the growing number of zombies is enough to create anxiety.

You can watch it on amazon, apple tv, disney+ so go and search it out!

FILM: LEO

Hanaan recommends.....

This movie is revolves around a recently-released prisoners and troubled young boy, who left everything for his family but his past does not let him live even his own father want to kill him as he refused to go back to his old life. I like the VFX it been used, they used an black dark setting to show how serial killer look like. My favourite part is where the Hyena attack on people and Leo try to save them. The maker used an VFX to show Hyena as a dangerous as it has an sharp teeth dripping blood from his mouth and scary voice which make audience to realised that the Hyena is real. People need to watch because it shows a family that want to live an peaceful life but some people don’t let them live such as his father who want him to serial killer again.

Here is an VFX breakdown video, we love those here.

YOU CAN WATCH IT ON NETFLIX NOW!

BOOK: THE CAT WHO SAVED BOOKS

Mah Rukh recommends.....

'The Cat Who Saved Books' is a Japanese translated novel written by Sosuke Natsukawa. It follows the story of a high school student named Rintaro who has lost his grandfather recently and is left alone with their old second-hand bookshop that he is about to close. When a talking cat named Tiger appears and asks for his help to 'save books', he has no choice but to follow. The cat leads him through portals from his own bookshop into other worlds where they encounter different people who have imprisoned, ripped and cut up, and are using books like a disposable product to be sold, when finally, there is a mission he must complete alone. This book talks about grief, care, importance of knowledge and books as well as the imperfections of being human.

This book is one of my favourite books as it is completely different genre than mainstream media and books I have seen. it is one of the first Japanese literature books i have read and the way it is written makes you feel connected to the story and characters. The writing is also very simple and easy to understand. The themes in this book are very heart touching and make you question things.

This is a beautiful book I highly recommend to any cat and booklovers if you are looking for something magical but contemporary to read. I hope you enjoy as I did!

FILM SERIES: DIVERGENT

Alisha recommends.....

The Divergent series 1, is the beginning of the dystopian society where the population in their world is sorted into factions (groups) based on there knowledge and where they see a different person of themselves. the main character Tris Prior and Four find each other after being sorted into their factions and find out they divergent.

The Insurgent movie: divergent series is about Tris Prior and Four are fugitives on the run. Hunted by other factions to find out Tris Priors parents' secret.

The Allegiant series is the based on the dystopian world in Chicago where the main characters secrets have been revealed to the others and find a way to escape beyond the wall that has kept the people in the factions locked in. they then discover new truths that will shift their alliances and introduce new threats.

I really enjoyed this series as it shows the audience a different view of how other writers/ people think how the dystopian society is shown. the different use of skills and the use of their acting makes it feel as if it's based on a true story of how the world can change easily by people and their secrets.

EVENT: ART BATTLE

Sophie recommends.....

The art battle is held in Manchester it is a big competition between 10 artists they get given a theme and have 30 minutes to create the best piece of work the audience then decides who the winner is so they can continue into the finals at the end one winner is announced over the past 9 years 250+ artists have battled it out with some getting such attention from the night that they continue to make the leap into becoming full time artists.

SFX ARTIST: RICK BAKER

KIRSTEN RECOMMENDS......

Rick Baker is a sfx makeup artist that worked on sets such as men in black, maleficent, the nutty professor and the wolfman. During his career he has won seven Oscars during his 40+ year of work in the sfx community.

Rick baker has also worked on very popular films doing the sfx makeup, this films are : how the grinch stole Christmas, planet of the apes. Baker first stared of creating masks in his room when he was just a little boy. This then led to his love of making monsters and designing new creatures. Another set that rick baker did was he transformed Michael Jackson into this dead looking creature during his music video thriller. I highly recommend looking into working with sfx makeup as it opens up a lot of new opportunities and is also very creative and messy to do which in my opinion is more fun as you get to experiment with different looks and styles.

Some examples of his work

YA BOOK RECOMMENDATION: THRONE OF GLASS SERIES BY SARA J. MAAS

HK recommends.....

What better thing to recommend than your favourite book series. Looking for the opportunity to escape reality? A fantasy series with the most beautiful, capturing worldbuilding, consisting of 8 books. It's full of adventure, action with the perfect amount of romance. With its intense storytelling, once you get into it, there's really nothing else you'll be thinking about.

Believe me when I tell you to not judge its cover, because if there's one thing, and only one thing, bad about this series, it's the cover. But that's it!

And if you're into your fanart, some really won't disappoint. But I also recommend you look at them AFTER you read the series, of course, to avoid some major spoilers.

Good luck and happy reading 🙂

FILM: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE

Ammarah recommends....

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One | Official Teaser Trailer (2023 Movie) - Tom Cruise

it's a solid new entry with plenty of astonishing set-pieces. It combines the futuristic concepts of AI & the quick paced scenes which keeps the audience intrigued. It holds the certain thrill in every scene and has a plot of how to overcome the villain of the crime, from past M.I movies. Tom Cruise, is a worldwide known actor, preferably liked by thousands and is the main character shooting and acting out fast-paced scenes which sort of reject the idea of death being his main objective in every situation he is encountered with throughout the movie, attracting the audience again to how he survives every time.
