Year 3
Year 3 have had an exciting and engaging start to the new term! To launch our new topic, Old Father Thames, we took a trip to inspire our learning. The children explored the River Thames, where they sketched the river and observed their surroundings carefully. We also enjoyed a walk through Old Leigh, taking in the local environment and capturing photographs of nature along the beach. We also had the excitement of Pukka Pickleball Club, who came in to school to lead sessions with each class. The children learnt about the history of the sport and had a go at playing some games. In English, we have been reading The Journey by Aaron Becker. This is a beautifully illustrated, wordless book. It gave the children a wonderful opportunity to use their imagination. They spent time exploring powerful verbs and descriptive phrases before writing their own sections of the story, producing some fantastic and creative work. In science, we have begun our new topic all about plants. The children carried out an investigation using celery, which they cut and placed into pots containing different food colourings. We are looking forward to observing what happens over the next week as part of our experiment. Maths lessons saw us learning about how we spend our money. Discussions were had about what things should be considered when spending such as value for money, budgets and needs versus wants.

Year 4
It has been lovely to welcome the children back after their Easter break. The have returned to school feeling refreshed and ready for the exciting term ahead. This week, our English lessons have involved studying an adapted version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The children have been introduced to the main characters from the story and have studied the relationships between them. Using their skimming and scanning skills, the children identified the characters’ actions and the dialogue used between them. From this, they were able to ascertain the characters’ private thoughts, feelings and desires. They have also used direct speech to write a conversation between two of the characters and have analysed the text to see how language is used to create suspense. In maths, there has been a focus on geometry, where the children have revised the various types of angles. They have used the correct mathematical vocabulary to identify and sort a range of polygons, including triangles and quadrilaterals, based on their properties. In science, our new topic of electricity was introduced. The children have defined what electricity is and have studied a range of electrical appliances, including those which are battery operated, those which run on mains and those which run on both. They have studied the hazards associated with electricity and have produced an electrical safety poster showing the dangers to avoid. As geographers, Year 4 went on their geography field study to Southend in order to find the answer to the question: ‘Is Southend-on–Sea a suitable location for a theme park?’ They used various fieldwork techniques such as completing field sketches, carrying out questionnaires to the general public, traffic and ride surveys and taking photos. The children thoroughly enjoyed the valuable experience and found out a great deal about the area in terms of its human and physical features.

Year 5
As if all the Easter eggs on the mantel piece at home weren't enough, we have indulged our taste buds further this week as we have started our new Connected Curriculum topic: Chocolate. On Tuesday, the children all took part in our hook day which allowed them to think about chocolate all day long! Starting with a quiz on chocolate trivia, we quickly moved onto a variety of different activities: making our own chocolate stirrers (which we hope have been enjoyed at home) using dark chocolate partnered with other flavour combinations, beginning to learn about the culture of Mesoamerica and the Maya, making authentic Mayan hot chocolate as well as listening to stories from the Maya and considering what chocolate means to us. It was such a fun day, full of excitement and enthusiasm for our exciting topic ahead. In our English lessons, the children were introduced to a mouse called Armstrong - the first mouse to the moon! This is a delightful tale to explore as the children follow the story of this resourceful mouse as he plans a trip to the moon - but the FBI are hot on his tail! This story is a great link with our science learning for this half term which is based on Earth and Space - how fortunate that NASA launched Artemis II just in time for our topic! Next week, we are heading to Belfairs Woods to investigate whether cacao trees could grow in Leigh on Sea as part of our geography filed study. 5N and 5F will head out on Tuesday, whilst 5G and 5A will go on Thursday. If possible, please can your child bring a packed lunch on their day so we can make a prompt exit from school at 1pm. Please also ensure they are wearing suitable shoes, a coat in case of April showers and sun cream, if necessary. Today, the children have brought home this half term's creative homework - a lunar diary. A new moon is set to grace our skies tonight. Please can we ask that you encourage your child to look for the moon each night and draw what they see on the homework sheet they have been given. They will need to bring this back into school on Monday 11th May for the science lesson that week.

Year 6
Year 6 have enjoyed a busy and engaging week, applying their knowledge and developing new skills across the curriculum. In English, they have been developing their GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling) skills, with a particular focus on refining their understanding of active and passive voice, as well as the use of commas for clarity. They have also worked hard to apply their improving reading comprehension skills with a range of engaging texts. In science, pupils have been introduced to the human body, learning about the key organs and their functions. This has provided a strong foundation for future learning, as they begin to understand how different systems work together to keep the body functioning effectively. In geography, they explored different types of settlements, identifying key characteristics and considering why settlements develop in particular locations. They also began to build their knowledge of the counties of England, developing a stronger sense of place and national geography. In Design and Technology, the pupils used Lego WeDo kits to investigate how movement can be generated and controlled. Through coding and experimentation, they learned to mimic the movement of animals, which will - hopefully - be applied next week with creativity, problem-solving and an increasing confidence with programming concepts.

Online Safety
Image-altering filters are now embedded in everyday online interactions, from playful effects to more subtle appearance-enhancing tools. This guide examines how these features can influence perceptions of beauty and reality, particularly for children and young people navigating social media. It highlights how filtered content can quietly shape expectations and online behaviours. Focusing on risks such as low self-esteem, social pressure and hidden advertising, the guide also addresses more serious concerns like sexualised edits and blurred boundaries between real and altered images. It provides supportive, practical advice to help parents build media literacy, encourage confidence and promote healthier relationships with online content.

Essex Cup Champions!
There was much excitement on Thursday morning as West Leigh competed in the final of the Jim Smith Essex Cup. A year on from losing in the final seconds of the cup final, the team were determined to win this year! The first half was an end-to-end thriller and the teams went into half time with the score at 3-3. West Leigh came flying out in the second half and asserted their dominance in the tie. They were relentless with their attacking and scored one goal after the other. West Leigh eventually won the game 7-3! This is a magnificent achievement! Every single one of the players played exceptionally and we are so proud of them!
Golden Leaf Awards
Last term, we were delighted to present our Golden Leaf Awards for the Spring term. These special awards are presented to just four pupils each term and are nominated by staff in recognition of their consistent demonstration of our Golden Values: empathy, integrity and responsibility. Each award recipient’s Golden Leaf will be added to our Golden Values Tree, where it will remain proudly on display throughout their time at West Leigh, celebrating their positive contribution to our school community. Each child also receives a golden leaf badge to wear. Our spring term recipients are: Year 3 - Fearne because she consistently demonstrates our school values. She is kind, well‑mannered and always treats others with care. Fearne works hard, gives her best in everything she does, and sets a positive example as a gentle, model pupil who contributes so much positivity to her classroom. Her integrity shines through in the way she works—honestly, diligently and with quiet determination. Year 4 - Rudy as he is incredibly kind to others, always ready to help his learning partner or anyone who is finding something difficult. It is rare to see a day go by without Rudy supporting someone in some way. He shows great responsibility too—regularly picking up litter, being honest, and acting as a positive role model for our Golden Values. As an Eco-Warrior, he takes his role seriously, always remembering meetings and carrying out his duties with commitment. Year 5 - Paisley because she is so frequently nominated for Golden Thank Yous by both her classmates and her teachers. This shows how consistently she demonstrates our school values of respect, empathy and integrity each day. Paisley is appreciated by staff and children alike for the many little things she does to make our school a better, kinder place. Year 6 - Caiden because he has shown responsibility on many occasions in the playground, which has been noticed by many members of staff. He frequently offers to help tidy up and, in his role as a prefect, takes initiative to make sure pupils are safely inside after lunch before going in himself. By consistently demonstrating our school values through his thoughtful actions and dependable attitude, Caiden is truly deserving of this recognition.
House Points
Sports Awards
Most Improved in Sport and PE: Sienna Lockwood (3H) for demonstrating an improved knowledge of how to score points in cricket.
Sports Performer of the Week: Freddie Thomas (6D) for an exceptional performance, controlling the midfield and dominating play during West Leigh's cup final victory!
Outside Achievements
A group of our pupils, Harry, Reuben, Arthur, Ruby and Billy, recently showed fantastic initiative and generosity by organising a lottery, raising over £44. Originally, they planned to donate half of the proceeds to charity, but in a wonderful act of kindness, they decided to give the full amount instead. The children proudly delivered their donation to the local children’s charity shop in Leigh, demonstrating both community spirit and compassion. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the positive example they have set for others.
