porters grange weekly newsletter week ending 15th September 2023

Nursery

This week we have welcomed all our new starters and have started to build some friendships. We are learning about our new environment and all the rules and routines. We have been busy using the sand, drawing, painting and working hard to share. We have started to enjoy our ‘love of reading’ book this half term which is ‘The Whales on the bus’.

Year 1

We have continued to set the expectations for behaviour and lesson choices this week. We are very proud of their excellent start to their year 1 journey.

In English, we have been looking at letter families, focusing on the ‘curly caterpillar’ letters. The children have been learning how to write the days of the week, short dates and titles, as well as using a ruler to underline.

In maths, the children have been writing numbers as words from 1-10. Also, we have been identifying ‘one more’ than a given number.

The children have loved our read aloud books – ‘Oi Cat’, ‘Oi Dog’ and ‘Oi Frog’. They were very good at identifying the rhyming words within the text.

REMINDERS: Please ensure reading books come into school every day.

PE kits must be in school. It is important the children learn how to change independently.

No water bottles please. The children have their own assigned cups in class, that are named and cleaned after every use.

Year 2

In year 2 we have been continuing our work on place value in maths. In English we have been thinking of lots of different adjectives to describe animals. We have started our foundation subjects this week and have learned about materials in Science and the differences between a village, town and city in Geography.

REMINDER: Don’t forget to bring in your reading books every day and read at home.

We do PE on Tuesday and all children need to have their PE kits in school.

Year 3

Year 4

This week year four have been learning about place value to 1000. We have used different methods and have shown great success! We also had a very fun lesson experimenting with clay. We made clay coils and eventually made some practise clay pots. In PE Orca class started to learn about how to play golf and Porpoise class started learning about tag rugby.

Year 5

This week, as a class we have been writing a poem. We have revisited similes and relative clauses. Next week, we will be writing our own poems about planets.

In Science, we found out interesting facts about planets and had a class quiz!

REMINDER: Please ensure home school diaries are brought in every day.

Year 6

This week, we have been reading and writing numbers to one million in maths. In English, we have been exploring a poem called ‘The Thistle’ and using the literary techniques to create our own poems about a setting in Sherlock Holmes. We have learned the scientific symbols to accurately draw a range of circuits in our science lessons.

REMINDER: Please continue enjoying listening to your child read and discussing their books with them. It is important they read books that they love.

All PE kits must be in school every Wednesday and Friday.

French

Year 2 have been enjoying learning about Autumn in French. Year 4 have been describing themselves with adjectives, and year 5 have become adept at using bi-lingual dictionaries in French.

Attendance

Attendance Awards

This week in celebration assembly Mrs Morris proudly introduced our best in the key stage attendance awards for the highest attendance in year 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6. Lobster class and Swordfish received a cup to display in class and Shell class received Attendance Ted to display in class as recognition of there classes having the highest attendance last week. The children really enjoyed being recognised for their efforts. Unfortunately there were no classes that were achieved an attendance reward activity, as all year groups had attendance below 96%. We can’t wait until Monday to hear which classes have achieved a reward for their attendance this week

Week 2 Whole School Attendance

The term had a slow start with attendance gradually improving 81% to 90% across the course of the week. These are still lower than expected figures as our target has remained 96%.

If you would like any support or advice on attendance or punctuality, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Mrs S. Wyer, Attendance Administrator or Mrs D Morris using the email attendance@pgps.porticoacademytrust.co.uk
