The Blast

City Manager Dennis' Weekly Update | July 1, 2026

The See Me Flags on Visitacion Ave. were being put to use on Tuesday afternoon as Club Rec Summer Campers made their way from BES to the Community Pool. This is currently Week 2 of 8 of Summer Camp 2026, where all sessions are full! Did you see the back cover of the July STAR? It features the 2026 Aquatics and Childcare Summer Staff, and even though it may be missing a few faces, the photos portray the incredible teams that are showing up each day for our young people; we hope they continue to make plenty of happy memories as they apply copious amounts of waterproof sunscreen!

Pride in the Park Recap

On June 25, 2026, the Parks and Recreation Department hosted the aptly named Pride in the Park event (last year, they held a Pride Pool Party)! From supporting the Farmers’ Market to celebrating with karaoke together under the Gazebo, Thursday was filled with community, connection, and plenty of fun. Participants enjoyed booths hosted by the San Mateo County Pride Center, San Mateo County Libraries, the Brisbane Youth Advisory Committee, the IDEA Committee, Parks & Recreation, and even Office Hours with Councilmember Lentz. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate inclusion, show up for one another, and continue to make Brisbane a place where everyone belongs.

And speaking of the Farmers' Market, this week's market will feature the return of The Daisy Refillery and a Community Blood Drive; Vitalant's bloodmobile will be parked down near the restroom facility between 3-6:30 PM (make an appointment or call 877-25-VITAL)!

Baylands Public Hearing Continued to 7/23

Last evening, the Planning Commission held a special meeting where they continued the public hearing from June 25, 2026. After presentations by staff and consultants, Planning Commission members had a time to ask questions of staff before the public's comments were heard. Thank you to those that provided their remarks in-person and online. You can watch back the meeting here in CivicClerk or on YouTube; livestreams can be accessed on both.

After the meeting entered its third hour, the Planning Commission moved to continue the public hearing to its July 23rd regular meeting at 7:30 PM, upon which they will commence deliberations before making their recommendation to the City Council on the project.

SMC Mosquito & Vector Control District's Open House

Saturday's Open House at the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District's offices in Burlingame was a reminder to take seriously mitigating pests such as mosquitos, yellowjackets, and rodents; they can pose serious public health risks such as West Nile Virus and Hantavirus.

Brisbane Trustee Michael Coleman and his wife show off a painted axolotl and the District's Communications Director Rachel Curtis-Robles had to get a blood-sucking mosquito.
The District coordinates closely with local, state, and federal agencies to help people and wildlife be peaceful neighbors. Their role includes giving specific advice on how to keep wildlife out of your home and from destroying your property. Submit a service request today!

Remember to never feed wildlife! Doing so is not only illegal, but is dangerous for animals and people.

July is National Parks and Recreation Month

As you can see, it's going to be a fun and full month! Please see the City's website for the latest information and pertinent registration links; we look forward to seeing you partake in one or more of the offerings!

4th of July Remembrances & Important Reminders

Fireworks of any kind are strictly prohibited in Brisbane, but there was a time when they weren't. The former Teen Age Club of Brisbane sent the below letter to the City's first City Manager, Lanier Brady, in June of 1964 requesting the City's approval for the club's "fireworks selling project" via a stand set up outside Midtown Market. Take a look:

With our Summer History Intern Maggie doing an immense amount of digitization and organization of photographs, please enjoy this 4th of July in Brisbane folder on Preservica, where we are continuing to house the City's digital collection of archive photos, certain documents & ephemera, and videos.

This one in particular may be familiar to you - it can be seen when you first come into City Hall, and was taken in 1935 as the parade made its way down Visitacion Ave. to Old County Rd.

We hope that your Fourth is one where you can reflect on the 250 years following the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It's that same spirit that led to this City of Stars incorporating as a city in 1961. You can read all about Brisbane's origin story in the A Spirit of Independence, which was published as part of the City's 25th Anniversary Celebration.

As you consider how you'll recommit to advancing democracy this weekend, remember that City Hall will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of the holiday. Please also celebrate safely!
