Principally Speaking

Students came well prepared for the first day of STAAR testing, and it was so sweet to see our K–2 learning buddies cheering them on with well wishes, chalk and posters this week! 💛 Looking ahead, 5th grade will take the Science STAAR next week, followed by the Math STAAR for 3rd-5th the following week. Also, please note that applications for next school year will reopen on April 20 for all grade levels with limited spots available. If you know someone who may be interested, please share this information. If you have a younger child who will be kindergarten age next year, we encourage you to apply, too! Los estudiantes llegaron muy bien preparados para el primer día de las pruebas STAAR, ¡y fue realmente emocionantes ver a nuestros compañeros de aprendizaje de K-2 animándolos con buenos deseos, tiza arte y carteles esta semana! 💛 De cara a las próximas semanas, los alumnos de 5.º grado presentarán el examen STAAR de Ciencias la próxima semana, seguido por el STAAR de Matemáticas para los grados 3.º a 5.º la semana siguiente. Asimismo, les informamos que las solicitudes para el próximo año escolar se reabrirán el 20 de abril para todos los niveles de grado, con un número limitado de cupos disponibles. Si conocen a alguien que pudiera estar interesado, por favor compartan esta información. Si tienen un hijo menor que el próximo año tendrá edad para ingresar a kínder, ¡también los animamos a presentar su solicitud!

Tips For Beating Test Anxiety

With tackling our first STAAR assessments this week and various end of the year exams approaching us, lots of kids get stressed out by taking tests. This is especially true of kids who have anxiety, ADHD or learning disabilities, who may feel less confident in school. Worrying that they won’t do well can make it harder to focus in the moment, but learning strategies to manage anxiety can help. Reducing anxiety starts with preparing for the test by using study techniques that will boost their confidence. Reviewing the specific test format and taking practice tests, if they can, will make them feel calmer. So can guessing the questions that might come up and practicing answering them. Looking for big themes in the material is another active way of studying that can help kids remember information. It’s important to make a plan of attack for the test itself. Kids can remind themselves that it’s okay to skip questions and come back to them. Avoiding spending too long on one question is usually a good idea too. Calming techniques like using a stress ball or taking deep breaths can also help.  Finally, encourage kids to remember that it’s okay if they don’t know the answer. Sometimes the best way to manage anxiety is to accept when they don’t know something and move on to the next question. It’s natural to feel intimidated by end-of-year-tests, but these strategies will help your child cope, feel confident and calm, and perform their very best. If your child’s test anxiety seems to grow worse with each test, a specialist could be beneficial. Therapists who are trained in techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy will be able to help children with particularly severe test anxiety. Additionally, specialists are better suited to identify the cause of the test anxiety and if it’s related to something bigger.

STAAR Exams

The following is the schedule for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Test on these days. The cafeteria and school will be closed to visitors/parents on testing days. El siguiente es el horario de las próximas evaluaciones estatales llamadas STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). La cafetería y la escuela estarán cerrada para visitas de padres/familiares/guardianes durante los días de exámenes:

• Thursday, April 9- 3rd, 4th & 5th Reading Language Arts/Lectura
• Tuesday, April 14- 5th Science/Ciencias
• Tuesday, April 21- 3rd, 4th & 5th Math/Matematicas

• Please try to avoid any early dismissals for personal reasons. Por favor evite recoger a su estudiante temprano por razones personales.

• As always, we will have a scheduled lunch break during testing days. The cafeteria will provide lunch for students or students may bring their lunch from home. Student Education Travel

We’re excited to share a Spring 2027 travel opportunity to Washington, D.C. & New York City for current 3rd–6th grade students. While not school-sponsored, we wanted to make you aware of this experience led by former Jones teacher Ms. Ortiz. An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, April 16 from 5:30–6:30 PM at Goodman Elementary. Families will learn about the itinerary, cost, and enrollment details. Space is limited, and attendees get first priority to enroll. Summer Programming w/ Boys & Girls Club

Are you looking for a safe, structured, affordable, and engaging summer program for your child? The Boys & Girls Club will offer a Summer Program at Miller Elementary from June 1–30. While the program will take place at Miller (not Jones), it provides students with a supportive environment that includes academic enrichment, social development, recreational activities, and healthy lifestyle programs. Volunteer Sign Up

Many hands make light work and we love our volunteers. We depend on our parents and volunteers to help make the best learning environment that we can for our kids. We encourage you to be an approved volunteer to help make a difference at school, sponsor fine arts events, chaperone field trips and work with students. All volunteers must submit an online application (every year) and upload a copy of your unexpired government-issued photo ID to the volunteer application.

Muchas manos facilitan el trabajo y amamos a nuestros voluntarios. Dependemos de nuestros padres y voluntarios para ayudar a crear el mejor ambiente de aprendizaje posible para nuestros hijos. Crayon Initiative March 23- April 24

We are going to take the next several weeks to focus on some sustainable and recyclable projects for the school. The first one will be The Crayon Initiative. While you are at home for Spring Break, gather up all those broken, discarded, unloved crayons and bag them up. We will get them sorted and send them off to a company that will melt them into new crayons to donate to Children's Hospitals all over the US. Help us get rid of waste and learn to help others as well. The attached flyer tells more. Be watching for a sign up for ways to help.
