CHASING A PASSION

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN A HORSE AND THEIR RIDER

Although many people have their own personal interests, and hobbies, what some people don't consider is the deep connection one can have with their passion.  For horseback rider Kassidy Boydell, her passion is more than just a sport, it's a personal haven to escape the realities of her everyday world.  “I had owned two pleasure horses growing up and always enjoyed being around them and caring for them, so I decided to try out horse riding one day and loved it,” said Boydell. Being consistent has never been an issue for Boydell, with seven years of experience, Boydell continues to learn and develop new skills, along with a meaningful connection to her horse, Loli.

Through the experience she has gained, Boydell expresses that creating a strong relationship with your horse is really important, not just personality wise but also how her horse may react to particular situations.  “Its an incredible feeling when you do a task with your horse flawlessly, almost like you're reading their mind,” said Boydell.

“Riding and being around horses in general makes me feel very relaxed, it's therapeutic for me.”

Despite the relaxed and therapeutic experience Boydell typically has, this sport can also come with a handful of stress and anxiety. “It is hard to get over the anxiety of sending a thousand pound animal over a four foot jump at like 20 kilometres an hour,” said Boydell. “You have to let the adrenaline flow and not think about the logistics of what you're doing.”

This form of anxiety is not something that just disappears, it is a trait that needs to be worked on during every lesson. The trust that is built with your horse during this sport, truly can be considered a skill. Boydell regulates any intense feelings by reminding herself to always get back on her horse.  Boydell is actively learning how to overcome any challenges that may face her and her horse, but with the connection and trust she has already built, it becomes clear that anything is possible.

“Its so much deeper than any other bond I've had with animals,” Boydell said.

“They're not just pets, they're working horses, and you have to have constant communication with the through your hands, legs and seat.”

For Boydell, horseback riding becomes more than just a sport. It's a strong connection built off of instinct and trust that her and loli create together.

“The bond we have is unlike any other,” said Boydell.
