December Newsletter Regent Farm First School

As we begin the festive break, I would like to start this newsletter by thanking you all for everything you have done this year to support your children, Regent Farm and our whole community. You make such a difference to life at school and I am exceptionally grateful. I would also like to thank the staff who have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic curriculum. Above all however, I am so grateful to your wonderful children for their hard work, positive attitude and smiling faces: they make me so proud.

The last few weeks have been such a magical time in school with a fabulous author visit, festive singing, glittery crafts and the special visit we had from Santa and his reindeer this week! On behalf of everyone at Regent Farm, can I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In this issue:

Update from the School Rebuilding Division, Department for Education

We (the DfE) recognise that the delays to progress into contract for a new school building for Regent Farm First School is frustrating for all parties involved. We are currently working through some technicalities with a potential contractor, who have submitted a bid for the contract. It is important that we are completely satisfied with the contractor’s proposals before we move forward to the next stage of the process. We hope to be able to confirm appointment of the contractor early in 2024, submit a planning application by the summer and get into contract towards the end of the year to start work on site before the end of 2024. We would like to reassure you that the department remains committed to providing Regent Farm First School with a new school building and we will continue to work with our partners to achieve this.

Decorations Day and Christmas Fayre

Tuesday was a fabulous day in school with our Christmas jumper day and parent craft sessions. The children have made a range of crafts, cards and calendars for you to enjoy at home. It was lovely to see so many adults joining in with the glittery fun too! I would also like to thank you for all the contributions to Save the Children – we have raised £134 for this worthwhile charity.

Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in setting up the school fayre, the donations and amazing cakes - and to all those families who attended. We made £1650 profit from this event; we will be working with the school council to think about how we use this money to benefit everyone in school. Any money raised from the year group enterprise stalls will be returned to that year for the classes to spend.

Online Safety

At Christmas we are aware some children may get new devices or technology, so this is an ideal time to refresh knowledge about online safety and what controls can be added to devices. GEM Education have prepared a short video which can be found below to show you where to find support to set up parental controls on new devices (which can set time limits, block spending, inappropriate content and contact among other features).

There are also lots of specific parent guides about the most common games and Apps which can be found on our school website in the online safety section; a link for this can be found below.

Bumblebees After School Club

Please remember the latest pick up for Bumblebees After School Club is 5:45pm. Staff stay late after a long day at work to provide this service to our families and it is unfair that some parents are repeatedly late to collect their child. Staff also have their own families they need to get home to. From January all parents will be charged a £20 late pick up fee if they are later than 5:45pm - this is to cover the overtime costs for the two staff members who must remain in school; this charge will apply even if you are only a couple of minutes late. If this happens repeatedly, we may have to pause further bookings you can make until we have reassurance the situation will improve.

Free School Meal Vouchers

Newcastle City Council have continued to issue Free School Meal Vouchers for this Christmas holiday, these are £40 per child. They were emailed through the usual system to all those families eligible for the vouchers. Please contact the school office tomorrow if you have any issues accessing this voucher.

Half Term Curriculum Information - Early Years

This half term, Nursery are enjoying being our twinkling stars and their work started with a visit to the real life pumpkin patch which had been set up on the field. Each child had their own admission ticket and found a pumpkin of their own to draw on, paint, hammer into, cut open and explore - as well as sketch and compare to the pumpkins of others. Then, after patiently bird watching for a while, Nursery were visited by some owl friends who helped the children explore the dark and what happens when we go to sleep.

In reception the children began exploring the night sky when the night pirates invaded, hoping for some children to join their band. These were no ordinary pirates, these were rough, tough, little girl pirates eager to steal treasure and have night time adventures! The inflatable planetarium arrived, turning the hall into a winter’s night. Our astronomer guide helped the children identify the constellations and planets. It really was a magical experience to explore the change of the seasons and welcome in the festive period. Recently things have got very Christmassy in all of early years as elves arrived, needing help with inventions, wrapping and even fixing sleighs. Nursery found the perfect tree in the woods to bring indoors and dress while Reception followed the Jolly Postman, helping him make his all important deliveries to the correct addresses.

Everyone enjoyed getting outdoors when the snow arrived and we all have our fingers crossed that it might return just in time for a white Christmas!

Half Termly Curriculum Information - Key Stage 1

This half term, Year 1 are looking to answer the question, 'Do I understand you?' Through their different books of the week they are exploring different celebrations as well as how peoples views and opinions matter, as Hank and Hoog taught us meeting in the middle can be a great place for all. They are enjoying learning about the History behind bonfire night and have had some fantastic debates on the roles Guy Fawkes and King James I played in the events of that November night. They concluded by thinking about why bonfire night is still celebrated and significant today. They have learned how to created different tones of colour and select which brush size to use for each task in Art and have used their knowledge to create their cards and calendars in the style or Georgia O'Keefe. Over the past few weeks they have worked really hard on their performance of Wriggly Nativity and wowed their audiences with their lines and singing, especially when the music was not on our side!

Year 2 are jetting off to Shanghai, comparing what life is like there compared to Newcastle. After comparing, schools, the river and buildings the children will answer the question, 'Would you prefer to live in Newcastle or Shanghai.' They have also been inspired by traditional Chinese stories such as Dream of the Butterfly and The Great Race in their English lessons, writing a newspaper article reporting on the events of the race. In art they have been exploring different types of dye including brusho and tie-dye: their final t-shirts are spectacular. They took full advantage of the stage to model their final designs and evaluate their products. They have finished off the term getting in the festive spirit creating some wonderful crafts and have loved learning songs for their concert.

Half Term Curriculum Information - Key Stage 2

At the moment Key Stage 2 are focused on our ‘Regent Farm Respects topic’ and the children are learning about different religions (Hinduism and Islam) through stories, artefacts and visits to places of worship. In Year 3, the children have been using the story of Rama and Sita as a stimulus in their writing and they've created their own wonderful stories. The children learnt about the Hindu Festival of Diwali and made Rangoli patterns using rice and lentils. They also made traditional Diwali Diya lamps using clay. In Science, the children are learning about light and dark. They have carried out investigations about shadows and they're showing great curiosity throughout the topic. In Art, the children have been developing textures and collage techniques which they will use to create a collage bird in the style of Mark Hearld.

In Year 4, the children have been looking at the lives of inspirational figures such as Walter Tull and Rosa Parks. They have been finding out about who they were and what they did that was so inspirational. They have been historians, looking at a range of sources. In English, they have written emotive speeches and used informal language to write a postcard from Walter Tull. In science the children are learning about States of Matter. They are exploring the concepts of melting and freezing through simple hands-on activities: they have particularly enjoyed melting different types of chocolate! The children also visited the Laing Art Gallery where they explored the use of watercolours.

The children throughout school thoroughly enjoyed our author visit from Vashti Hardy and it was an absolute delight to have her in school to deliver workshops with the classes. Key Stage 2 have been working on some great activities based on Vashti Hardy’s book ‘Santa’s Marvellous Mechanical Workshop!’ This super book is about Lily, a brilliant inventor, who meets a friendly Elfbot and goes on a magical adventure to Santa’s workshop. In Year 3, the children spent time in our woodwork room recreating the Elfbot from Santa’s workshop. They used beads, corks and buttons to create a face and fastened them to balsa wood using nails. In English, they wrote poems to describe their Elfbot. After that, the children read their poems aloud to music. Some children created whole songs about their Elfbot and performed their lyrics to their friends. In Year 4 the children had fun thinking of what amazing toys Lily could turn different objects into whilst she was in the elves’ workshop. They described the toys using adjectives, adverbs, similes and metaphors. Then, they worked as a team to design and create their toy.
