PODCASTING TIPS

Podcasts are a great way to transition from traditional academic assignments to projects with an element of digital literacy while capturing the nuances of in-depth conversation and analysis without the need for time-consuming video editing or set-up.
  1. Location scout: A quiet, predictable space is more valuable than an expensive microphone
  2. Mic Check: Check your microphone settings, too loud can be worse than too quiet!
  3. Prepare: Organize all of your files before you begin- music, sound effects, scripts, images, etc
  4. Determine your theme and audience
  5. To practice or not: Decide if you need a script or if you desire candidness in the recording. Candid conversations can be more genuine and inviting but can easily be derailed!
  6. Re-record mistakes: Don't be afraid to do multiple takes
  7. Polish your work: Edit your audio with your favorite software: Raw audio is often flat and uninviting
  8. Add some spice: Add sound effects and music to create a complete listening experience
  9. Publish your work: there are many hosts for podcast, with Spotify and Apple Music perhaps being the largest. This article has a great list.

What is Audition?

Audition is a professional grade audio editing, mixing, and recording software by Adobe. This particular demo will scratch the surface of recording with Audition

Starting a Project

To start a podcasting/multitrack session, go to File>New>"Multitrack Session", then select the "Podcasting" template:

Templates will prelude tracks with settings to help streamline the process

Recording Audio

Once you designate your input, you can record at the click of a button
Audio hardware settings

Check your audio hardware settings under preferences (Premiere Pro>Preferences on Mac and Edit>Preferences on Windows) and make sure you have the correct input/output selected

Input selection

Select your input on the desired track. Mono is usually used for podcasts and stereo for music.

Track is targeted for recording

Click the "R" to target the track for recording. Now, when you press the record button the audio will be written to this track.

When you record try to find a quiet place away from vents, device fans, and other noisy elements.

Adding Audio

You can also drop in pre-recorded audio, music, or sound effects.

You can drag and drop files to whichever track you like. Layering your audio will cause them to play at the same time, while placing them consecutively will play the sound in order.

You can find free audio files on sites like https://freesound.org/home/

Editing Audio

In this demo, we will explore trimming audio and making simple corrections/adjustments

Splitting Clips

Razor tool

Like many other audio or video editors (even smart phones), you can shorten audio clips by dragging in the beginning or end of the clip. In Audition, you can also split clips at any point using the razor tool.

The playhead is the blue flag with a red line

You can also move the playhead (circled in the image above) to where you would like to split the clip and press cmd/ctrl + k to split the clip immediately.

Adjusting Sound

A few tips about editing your sound:

  1. Adjust your clips before splitting them
  2. Apply corrections (noise reduction, EQ, dehum...)
  3. Adjust gain/volume last
We recommend using the "Essential Sound" panel for a streamlined editing experience

When you select a clip, the right-hand panel will display the essential sound options. When you assign a tag to the clip (dialogue, music, etc..) an editing panel will be displayed. In this panel you will have many options to take your audio from OK to great

Adjusting Clip Volume

Volume in measured in decibels (db) and can be adjusted in multiple area, in this demo we are using the essential sound panel
You can find the volume adjustment at the bottom of the essential sound panel

A general rule of thumb is to adjust your clip's volume so that the majority of the sound stays in the "green" while peaking into the yellow around -6db. The occasional very loud element may peak in to the read.

This level indicator will help you set your volume

Repairing Audio

This panel helps you reduce unwanted noises like humming, "esses" and static noice.

The "Repair" section is one of the most useful tools in this panel. Click the word "Repair" to expand the sliders and check any box you would like applied. Remember that less is more and its better to start with quality audio-- if you find yourself sliding these to the max you may be better of re-recording

Exporting & Sharing your Project

When you are done, you can export your project to a specific file format and share it with the world!

To export, go to File>Export>Multitrack Mixdown>"Entire Session"

Here you can name your project, designate where it will be saved, and choose your format!
