THIS WEEK'S upcoming EVENTS!
Brunswick Civil War Round Table
mar. 17
From Central Africa to the battlefields of the Civil War… this story travels. The Brunswick Civil War Round Table is welcoming award winning journalist Dean Calbreath for a fascinating talk about Sergeant Nicholas Said, the remarkable figure at the center of Calbreath’s book, The Sergeant. Born in the African kingdom of Borno, Said was captured as a teenager, sold into slavery, traveled across Europe and the Middle East, learned multiple languages and eventually made his way to the United States where he served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His life later included work helping newly freed slaves and advocating for education and opportunity. Calbreath spent more than a decade researching Said’s extraordinary journey, and his presentation brings that history to life in a way that promises to surprise even seasoned Civil War enthusiasts.

Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo
apr. 12
Shrimp now. Fireworks later. The folks behind the N.C. Fourth of July Festival are throwing a laid back kickoff called the Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo at The American Fish Company in Southport, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: good seafood, good company and a little early dose of patriotic spirit. It’s also a fundraiser for the big celebration that takes over Southport and Oak Island every summer. The festival runs June 26 through July 4, and this event helps keep all those parades, concerts and fireworks coming back year after year. Grab your tickets soon and come hungry. Pickin’, grinnin’ and pitching in. Just a reminder about Banding Together's upcoming live show at Woodlands Park full of banjos, fiddles and plenty of toe-tapping tunes. Along with the music, the evening also includes food and drinks, raffles, a live auction and a 50/50 drawing. The event supports Christian Recovery Centers, Inc., a Brunswick County nonprofit that provides free residential drug and alcohol treatment. With a success rate close to 80%, their work is helping people rebuild their lives right here in our community. Help make this mission even bigger and better than last year's!
