About the ranger cadets
Ranger Cadets is an independent voluntary youth organisation based in Derby (Chaddesden) providing young people with opportunities to develop skills, confidence, and discipline in a safe and supportive environment.
We deliver a structured training programme inspired by the Armed Forces,
- Fieldcraft & Survival – learning to live and work outdoors
- Drill & Ceremonial – teamwork, discipline, and pride in presentation
- First Aid & Safety – lifesaving knowledge and confidence in emergencies
- Navigation & Map Reading – building independence and leadership in the field
- Physical Training & Adventure – fitness, resilience, and teamwork
- Community Engagement – volunteering, fundraising, and supporting local events
Our aim is simple: to give every cadet the chance to grow, achieve, and succeed regardless of background. We teach respect, honesty, and teamwork, while giving young people the opportunity to take part in exciting activities, from camping and adventure training to water sports and community projects.
Ranger Cadets is open to young people aged 8–18 and led by experienced adult volunteers. Many of our staff are veterans or have professional experience in youth development, bringing a wealth of knowledge to our training.
Joining Ranger Cadets means more than just wearing a uniform – it’s about belonging to a team, building lifelong skills, and making lasting friendships.

Join the ranger cadets
We’re always looking for new people to join our Ranger Cadets family – whether as a cadet (ages 8–17) or as an adult volunteer. We only have one unit, so the best first step is to arrange a visit to meet the team. You’ll be able to chat with our cadets and staff to see what we’re about. We have limited spaces available, so visits are arranged by appointment to give each family the time and attention they deserve.
Join as a Cadet
Getting started is simple. A parent or guardian can contact us to arrange a visit to a parade night. You’ll take part in a free taster session, meet the team, and experience the activities for yourself. There’s no pressure — if you enjoy it, we’ll guide you through the next simple steps to join.
Join as a adult volunteer
If you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch to arrange a visit and an informal chat.No previous experience is needed — full training and support are provided. The joining process includes an application, references, and a DBS check, and we’ll support you through each stage.
