Join the Journey:

2025–26 Season at The Soraya

Each Soraya season is a journey. A word that suggests many meanings, a journey can be far from the here and now, an exploration of what’s new or novel, a return to timeless themes and ideas that are affirming beyond being familiar.

When we imagine this journey, a year or more in the planning, you are always on our minds — the many audiences from the Valley and beyond, with varied tastes and interests, unique cultures and communities, and a wide range of life experience.

The 2025–26 Season journeys farther than any previous: the nightlife of Lisbon, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City; the daily life of West Africa; the spiritual realms of Alice Coltrane and Duke Ellington; the masterworks of Brahms and the megahits of Quincy Jones; and much more.

Program Note

These performances of Disney and Pixar’s classic Toy Story represent the intersection of two Soraya favorites — on one hand, our annual presentation of a live orchestra accompanying a Disney animated film on the large screen; on the other hand, an extraordinary artist who has more recently become a friend of The Soraya, composer and songwriter Randy Newman. This weekend promises to be sheer delight for all ages, and a perfect example of what we do best.

Gratefully,

Thor Steingraber

CSUN Symphony Orchestra

The CSUN Symphony Orchestra is regarded as one of the finest university orchestras in the Western United States. Under the direction of Dr. John Roscigno, the CSUN Symphony offers a full range of orchestral experiences for the career-oriented student, including four major concerts a year as well as choral, opera, and musical theater performances.

The orchestra is open to both music and nonmusic majors. Competitive auditions take place a few days before classes start in the fall and spring. Auditions consist of orchestral excerpts from both the standard and season repertoire.

The CSUN Symphony performs standard orchestral literature as well as important works of the 20th century, plus major operatic works.

The CSUN Orchestra has been invited twice to perform as the orchestra in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in Palm Springs and routinely performs special large-scale productions including live orchestra with film productions at The Soraya.

Opera performance is an important part of an undergraduate education for instrumentalists seeking careers in performance. The CSUN Opera program puts on full-scale productions in both fall and spring. Members of the symphony orchestra perform in the fall opera. The spring opera typically uses a smaller chamber orchestra.

Alumni of the CSUN Symphony have gone on to careers with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the New World Symphony, and the symphonies of San Francisco, Houston, Toronto, San Diego, and many others.

John Roscigno

Dr. John Roscigno is Chair of the percussion program and Director of orchestral studies at California State University, Northridge where he has been on faculty for more than 20 years. He has also served as Conductor of the CSUN Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre, and has taught undergraduate and graduate conducting. Roscigno also served as Music Director of the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic. In addition to his university position, he was the Music Director of the CSUN Youth Orchestra program, an organization comprised of three ensembles and 200 students from the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas, for two decades. Roscigno’s versatility as a conductor, pianist, percussionist and composer has led to many unique and varied performing opportunities in his musical career in the United States and abroad.

Roscigno has had the opportunity to work extensively with professional orchestras, college orchestras, and younger musicians throughout his career. He has conducted Opera Constanta of Romania, the Conway Symphony, Tucson Symphony, and Plainview Symphony. Roscigno has been a high school all-state clinician in Arizona and California. He has been a guest faculty member at Cazadero and Gold Coast Summer music festivals and has held music faculty positions at University of Arizona, Auburn University, and University of Central Arkansas. Roscigno has twice served as conductor for the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.

Highlights of Roscigno’s collaborative career include serving as pianist for world-renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie, hosting George Crumb in a residency featuring collaborative performances with the composer, and conducting the West Coast premiere of Philip Glass’ Second and Seventh Symphonies. As a strong advocate of new music, Roscigno has conducted humerous premieres by the nation’s leading young composers. His most cherished accomplishments include performing in Carnegie Hall, Yankee Stadium, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Roscigno holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in percussion performance from the University of Illinois under Tom Siwe, and a bachelor’s degree as a double major in piano and percussion performance from the University of Arizona under Gary Cook and Nicholas Zumbro. In addition to Roscigno’s musical activities, the New York City native is an abstract painter, a cyclist, and an avid sports fan.
