An Invitation to a Holy Lent
As we approach Lent this year, I am more aware than ever of the need to really take a deep inward examination of my soul in the midst of everything going on in our country and in the world. Lent calls us to repent from what is distracting us from who we are and whose we are. We are beloved children of God. We are called to discern how we can use our voices and actions to strive to respect the dignity of every human being. So many people are living in fear of an unknown future, many of whom are seeking peace, hope, welcoming, and prayer from our community and communities across the country. We need to have our eyes and hearts open for all that God is calling us to do in our own lives, the lives of our family and our church to discover the light of Christ residing in each of us and to take heart in God’s promise to never let us go. Lent offers each of us a call to a season of metanoia, which is Greek for literally turning around and returning to a place of love and an intentional closeness to God. How can we do this work in our lives? We can search for what we are grateful for in our lives, we can add prayers and devotions (see some examples in this Chimes), and we can engage in the sacrament of Reconciliation of the Penitent. This sacrament involves only you and the priest, and begins on page 447 in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). This is a powerful way to name the sins that you have not been able to let go of through your private prayers with God and in our corporate confession in worship services. One of my most favorite prayers in the BCP within this sacrament is on page 450. I pray that this Lenten journey, I will try to focus on ways to find common ground as beloved children of God, so that despite our differences, regardless of how small or gigantic, we find the holy in all whom we encounter. Please pray over the choices of healing and pondering and prayer that will be offered this Lent. The Lenten series following the 10:00 service is engaging in all ways: Come give it a try! Dive in to the gift of examining and preparing your soul this season to be ready to be open to the journey of the brutal death of Christ, who intimately knows our suffering, and God’s promise to make all things new through the resurrection of Jesus on Easter.
Peace, Lisa+
Lenten Resources
Walking Together - Sundays after Church
In our Sunday Adult Formation program this Lent, we will be discussing a series from the Seminary of the Southwest, "Renewal and Hope." Each week will include a short video, followed by discussion and reflection. Join us Sundays after the 10:00 AM service (February 22 - March 22) for this rich experience.

- Daily Meditations from Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD). This Lenten season, join us for Episcopal Relief & Development’s 2026 Lenten Meditations, "Holy Habits." Written by Sister Monica Clare, an Episcopal nun, author and unlikely TikTok star, these 2026 meditations offer an invitation to rediscover—or deepen—holy habits of prayer, worship and engagement with Scripture. These "holy habits" provide a path to a life that is given shape, meaning and direction by being rooted in a deeper relationship with God. Visit episcopalrelief.org/Lent to subscribe to daily emails, read the meditations online or download a PDF.
- Brother, Give Us a Word from the Brothers at the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) in Cambridge, MA. The daily meditations are 2-3 sentences. Give it a try!
Midnight Run Recap
Thank You for Making Midnight Run Possible
We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated in our recent Midnight Run and helped make it such a meaningful expression of compassion and care. Thank you to those who organized and coordinated the effort, and to everyone who donated food, clothing, and toiletries. We are thankful for all who cooked, packed, sorted, labeled, and helped prepare so thoughtfully. Each contribution—large and small—played an essential role. A special word of appreciation goes to those who went on the run itself, serving our neighbors in the bitter cold. Your willingness to show up in challenging conditions was a powerful witness to love in action. Midnight Run reminds us that when our community comes together with open hearts and generous hands, God’s love is made tangible. Thank you for being the Church beyond our walls.
By the time you read this, the Community Outreach Committee will have met to choose several organizations we will approach to send a speaker to a Sunday worship service during Lent to update you about the work and needs of their organizations. These programs are supported by a portion of the Outreach budget approved by the Vestry. We are hoping you will learn a bit about where our money is going. The full list of recipients is listed in the Annual Report. We will also be talking about the possible recipient of our Easter Appeal. Watch for more details about our Lenten speakers in the weekly e-news or contact Dolores Battalia or Robin Ingram. For more information about Community Outreach, check out our website.
Called to Peace in a Violent World
In January, our community gathered for a Prayer Service for Peace, Safety, and Healing, holding sacred space in a world marked by ongoing violence—racist violence, violence in schools and houses of worship, and violence between nations. Together, we named both our deep longing for peace and the hard truth that peace often feels fragile and elusive. Through scripture, music, silence, and candlelight, we were reminded of God’s call to a different way. The prophet Micah’s words—to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God—and Jesus’ promise, “Peace I leave with you,” grounded our prayers and our hope. In her reflection, Lori Wilson named the tension many of us feel: the desire for peace in the world, and the deeper need for peace within our own hearts so that we may have the courage and stamina to work for it. Jesus lived in a violent world, yet consistently chose the way of nonviolence, love, and understanding. He also modeled balance—stepping away to pray, rest, and be renewed. We were reminded that the work of peace does not begin with grand gestures, but with daily choices: resisting fear, guarding our words and actions, and meeting others with compassion, even across deep divides. As candles were lit and prayers offered for communities around the world and close to home, we entrusted our fears and hopes to God. We left strengthened and sent forth with a simple, powerful call: to let peace begin in our own hearts, and to allow it to ripple outward—to our families, our community, and our world.
Ash Wednesday call to repentance
From the Diocese of New York: Join faith leaders on Wednesday, February 18th at 3pm at 26 Federal Plaza as we surround the building in prayer and call on ICE and our federal government to turn back from cruelty and chaos and reclaim our shared humanity. We, as Christians, acknowledge that so much of the cruelty in our immigration system right now is being done within the container of White Christian Nationalism. As Christians, we call on our fellow Christians to repent and journey with us toward a shared vision of God's future. Click here to sign up to join and learn more.

Lent Begins February 18
Preparing Our Hearts for Easter
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 18, inviting us into a season of reflection, prayer, and preparation as we journey toward Easter. For families, Lent offers a meaningful opportunity to help children—and ourselves—slow down, listen more closely, and make space for Jesus in our daily lives. One way to begin the season is by observing Ash Wednesday, either by attending a service or receiving ashes. The simple mark of ashes reminds us that we belong to God and that each day is a gift. Throughout Lent, we are invited to let go of something so that our hearts have more room for love, gratitude, and compassion. Families might consider:
- Sacrificing screen time, using that space for conversation, reading, or quiet prayer
- Doing one good deed each day in secret, practicing loving kindness the way Jesus loves
- Adding a simple daily prayer, or taking time each evening to thank God for three blessings from the day
These small, faithful practices can help children experience Lent not as a burden, but as a season of growth and grace. On Sundays during Lent, we will also offer Adult Formation after the service in the Living Room, with conversations focused on living Lent in our everyday lives. All are welcome to join us for reflection, learning, and community. May this holy season help us prepare our hearts—together—for the joy of Easter.
Sound Shore Youth Service
A Night of Worship, Joy, and Connection
On January 11, our Sound Shore Youth community gathered for a joyful and energetic Youth Service, and it was a night to remember! We were delighted to welcome friends from Ascension, Mt. Vernon, including the Rev. Cheryl Parris, who joined us with a youth volunteer and students for an evening of connection, worship, and fun. We began the night by sharing a meal together—laughing, talking, and getting to know one another as youth from different communities came together around the table. From there, we moved into a Eucharistic Service, beautifully celebrated by Rev. Lisa & Rev. Cheryl. A Youth Service is a Eucharistic Service much like our Sunday 10:00 AM service, but intentionally designed with youth in mind. The music is more contemporary, students take on leadership roles by reading, leading music, and participating in worship in every way they can—and the energy is joyful, engaging, and full of life. On this evening, music was led by our Middle School Youth Group, who filled the space with enthusiasm and heart. We closed the night the best way possible—with skits, cake, and lots of smiles. It was clear by the end of the evening that meaningful relationships were formed, faith was shared, and everyone had a truly great time. We’re already looking ahead with excitement: the next Sound Shore Youth Service will take place in May, and we can’t wait to gather again for another evening of worship, friendship, and fun.
Stay tuned for details—and thank you to all who helped make this night so special!
Save the Date: Sunday, June 7
Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 7, a joyful and meaningful day in the life of our parish. At the 10:00 AM service, we will welcome Bishop Matt Heyd for his visit and celebrate the Service of Confirmation. We will also observe Senior Sunday, honoring and blessing our high school and college graduates as they celebrate the completion of an important chapter in their lives. Join us as we give thanks for faith, growth, and new beginnings — and save the date now!

SJYEC Announces 2026 Grant Focus
The St. John’s Youth Empowerment Council (SJYEC) is excited to announce the focus of its 2026 youth-led grant initiative. After prayerful discernment and thoughtful conversation, this year’s youth leadership group has chosen to direct its grant funding toward programs that support teens facing mental health challenges.
This decision reflects SJYEC’s ongoing commitment to youth leadership, justice, and compassion—listening closely to where the needs are greatest and responding with care and action.
The grant award will be presented on Sunday, June 7, at the 10:00 AM service, as we gather as a parish to celebrate the leadership and faith of our young people. Parishioners who would like to help increase the impact of this grant are invited to make a donation through the St. John’s website (select "SJYEC" from the dropdown). More information about the grant application process will be shared in the coming weeks. We invite the parish to hold SJYEC and the young people they seek to support in prayer as this work continues.

Tuesday, February 17 at 6:30pm - Shrove Tuesday Pancakes & Bacon!
This upcoming Tuesday evening you are all invited to come to a Pancake and Bacon Party at St. John’s Church in the Undercroft to prepare our hearts and minds for Lent. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated as a day of fasting and confession before entering the season of Lent. The popular tradition of eating pancakes recognizes the celebration of life before we turn our faces to Jerusalem and all that happens on that journey. Pancakes are a symbol of emptying your pantry of eggs and fats in preparation for the fasting and foregoing of large feasts during Lent.
There will be our traditional children’s activities of burying the alleluia caterpillars and decorating an Easter banner. Burying the alleluia caterpillars represent that we “bury” the alleluias in our service to worship in a more penitential manner. On Easter we will celebrate Christ's resurrection as we “unbury” the alleluia caterpillars and unfurl our Easter banner.
Hope to see you next Tuesday, 2/17 at 6:30pm.
Peace, Lisa+

Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad
Ingredients
For the dressing:
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
- 2 tsp. Dijon mustard
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
For the salad:
- 1 lb. Brussels sprouts, ends trimmed
- 1 large Honeycrisp apple, chopped (or 2 small apples)
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
- 1/3 cup shredded or shaved Parmesan cheese
- Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- First, make the maple mustard dressing. In a small bowl or jar, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, pure maple syrup, mustard, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
- Next, shave the Brussels sprouts. Use a food processor with the slicing attachment and pulse until the Brussels sprouts are thinly sliced. You can also use a mandoline or sharp knife if you don't have a food processor.
- Place the shredded Brussels sprouts in a large bowl. Add the chopped apple, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, and Parmesan cheese. Drizzle the salad with the dressing and toss well. Season with salt and pepper and serve.
Store the salad in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
