Dreams are personifications of unconscious awareness—like a client at the door of the therapy room, reaching out to be met and received by a benign, accepting presence. In the world of dreams, the lucid dreamer assumes the role of the therapist, holding space for the dream to be fully received and realised in conscious awareness. Through this process, the unconscious content of the dream is transformed and integrated into waking consciousness.

If you’re new to lucid dreaming, this might sound like a lot of ‘woo-woo’ nonsense- here’s why it isn’t….

Imagine you have a client, trapped in a traumatic memory that keeps resurfacing in their dreams. Now imagine having the tools to safely guide them in transforming that memory through lucid dreaming therapy. Step one: develop your own understanding of lucid dreaming as a tool for psychological healing with other therapists.

Like EMDR, lucid dreaming is a hybrid state of consciousness with neural correlates that are distinctly different from both waking and non-lucid dreaming states. It serves as a bridge where the unconscious and conscious mind engage in open dialogue—this is where lucid dreaming becomes particularly valuable for therapists. During REM sleep, naturally occurring bilateral stimulation supports emotional reprocessing. When a lucid dreamer enters this REM state and openly receives unconscious dream content—whether a representation of a past experience or a previously unrecognised aspects of identity, the lucid dreamer can choose to embrace or actively change the dream scene which means a process of healing or self development unfolds. Affect regulation, memory reconsolidation, and emotional processing all take place- releasing stuck trauma, reintegrating unrealised parts of the self, and establishing a fuller, healthier self-narrative. Lucid dreaming aligns with IFS concepts of Self-leadership and parts awareness, Jungian theory of individuation, through shadow integration, and EMDR trauma processing through emotional reprocessing. However, it differs from therapy in one key way, in that it is an intrapsychic process, offering a rich toolbox for therapists in practice.

If you are now wondering why you haven’t heard of lucid dreaming for psychological healing- keep reading! A lucid dreaming practice for therapists not only supports ongoing self-realisation but also enhances clinical work. It provides tools for self-reflection, reveals unconscious biases, blind spots, and countertransference, and facilitates access to an internal supervisory perspective. Upon completion of the course and practicum, participants return to their clinical practice and personal lives with an extraordinary toolbox, gained through active engagement with the wisdom of the dreaming mind
