Devon Fedler Mastery Journal
Full Sail University Public Relations MFA
About Me: I am Devon Fedler, a graduate from Full Sail University, and I have chosen to return in an attempt to earn my master's degree in public relations. My educational road has been long and arduous, and led me from Montgomery, Alabama to back home to Jacksonville, Florida. It took me over ten years to earn my Bachelor's degree, but I decided to go back to school for something I loved doing: writing. I knew after I graduated that I had to further my education in order to get my family into a better financial standing in life, and when I saw the directions I could go with my new degree, I knew immediately that Public Relations was for me. I had already shadowed the public relations team at my current employer, and loved every second of it, and was even able to write a blog post for the website, which was a professional highlight for me. I'm incredibly excited to start this journey in life and begin to grow my portfolio and knowledge of Public Relations.
Intention Statement: In my mastery journal, I would love to document my learning and watch it grow over the next twelve months with the information that I am acquiring from my classes moving forward throughout the program. I'm very excited for this next step, and I am looking forward to noticing the changes and how it becomes attached and follows through my next stage at Full Sail University. In this Mastery Journal, my goals are to transfer my knowledge to the journal and understand how to make myself more marketable for the workforce and my future employers, after this journey is complete, and I can move on to the next chapter of my life with my master's degree in hand. Some of my hopes for what I want to learn throughout this process and journal are as follows: I would love to learn how to balance a social media page for marketing and advertising, and use those skills to balance this journal as such. So that I may get real-world practice and hands-on training to be able to use my skills in the manner that will be needed of me at a PR firm. With this journal, one thing that I would like to do with it is to kind of document life growth through it, as well as make little notes of how things are going and what has changed in my personal life as I progress through this next year. There's a lot on my plate, and I think it would be fun to see how my professional and personal life grow next to each other through all of the journeys that I am experiencing right now. I am sincerely looking forward to this next year and watching this journal grow as I grow, not only as a professional but as a person as well. The thought of where I will be in twelve months is exciting, and I can't wait to document the journey with this journal.
Inspiration: "Even if you fall flat on your face, you're still moving forward" - Victor Kiam. A college professor gave me a notecard with this quote on it, and it is still pinned up on my fridge over 10 years later. I love this quote and say it often.

12/14/2025 "Success isn't forever and failure isn't fatal." - Don Shula As a Jacksonville Jaguars fan, I'm not one to give much credit to the Miami Dolphins organization, but Don Shula deserves his flowers. As the most winningest coach in NFL history, Don knew what success was and how to achieve it. This quote to me tells me that the level of success that I want to achieve won't last forever, but that I will fail, and it will not be the end of my life or career goals, and I feel like sometimes I need to hear that, so I don't focus too much on the failures in life.

02/01/2026 My favorite assignment in this class was the PSA video assignment. I had a great time and challenge collecting footage and editing it using Adobe Premiere. The voice-over and getting it just right within the 30-second mark were a challenge, but I felt so accomplished and proud of my finished project. Furthermore, having the video posted on Youtube I was able to send the link to my Director of PR to help build my portfolio with her and have something that showcases the work that I can add to my proverbial toolbox that also has a professional press release and a blog post that I was able to write for my current organization of K9s for Warriors. Out of all the topics this month, I truly believe all of them will be useful and will benefit my future career path. However, I feel like writing the Press release will be extremely beneficial for my future because it helps with technical writing and gives a general idea of how a press release should be written which will help with any organization that I work with eventually because, press releases help bring media attention to major events which can help with funding and more depending on the organizations mission, for example pet adoptions in how I used them in this course. I think that the information acquired this month will prepare me to work with professionals in the public relations industry because I will know how to write press releases, how to edit video, what footage to acquire, and how to communicate professionally and meet deadlines to maintain productivity. This class also taught me how to cater to a specific client’s niche and the service that they provide to the community. This course took a lot of planning and foresight, and I was able to try a lot of new approaches to my work and schedule. I really enjoyed Public Relations in a Digital World and can’t wait for its real-world application.
