LMHS Smooth Sailing Newsletter - Term 3 2023

Principal's Report

Greetings to all students, parents and our learning community.

Great to be back on deck this term at LMHS and what a busy term it has been.

Always a tinge of sadness as Term 3 sees us bid farewell to our Year 12 students, many of whom have been with us on the journey since Year 7. Most certainly the cleverest “dress up as your mentor day” I’ve seen with Tiana Davey as Ms Maher and Hannah Moreau as Ms Rudd stand outs.

A wonderful effort from our graduating Year 12 of 2023. They were the unsung heroes of COVID and had to play a bit of second fiddle to our senior students at that time as we worked feverishly to catch them up and get them across the HSC line that COVID had so dramatically disrupted. A great deal of persistence and resilience will be associated with this cohort of Year 12 students. Of course, the students couldn’t do it without a great bunch of dedicated and inspirational teachers who made school worth attending and their subjects worth studying. Hopefully they taught you “where to look, but not what to see”.

As well as quality classroom instruction, other activities and achievements this term have been, but not limited to:

  • CAPA Shine Camp at Glenrock
  • LMHS Annual Snow Trip to Thredbo.
  • Run Beyond Project - 10klm as part of the Sydney Marathon.
  • Year 12 student Jess Denniss was awarded a Gold Medal in CHS Gymnastics for the Beam.
  • Year 12 Major Works and Performances submitted/delivered in Visual Arts, Music, Society & Culture, IT Timber and Extension 2 English.
  • Wear it Purple Day, National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence and R U OK? Day were all strongly supported by students and staff.
  • VET Work placement - Year 11 in Construction, Sports Coaching and Hospitality.
  • White Card course was delivered by LMHS for the first time courtesy of Mr Westwood.
  • RYDA - Year 10 Driver Road Safety and Awareness training.
  • Fantastic NAIDOC Week Celebrations and strong participation and engagement in our local AECG’s Muru Bulbi Shield sports competition.
  • And a number of sporting teams have been out to play in CHS competitions.

So, we look forward to a well deserved holiday for students and staff and hope that Term 4 treats us kindly in relation to weather conditions and hazards associated with the predicted hot, dry Spring and Summer. While we are optimistic and always expect the best, we will prepare for the worst to ensure continuity of learning and care for all our students is paramount in our day to day work.

As always, a massive thank you to our fantastic families and community who continue to work with us and walk alongside us, on the educational journeys of their children.

Take care and stay safe.

Tony Keevill - Principal LMHS.

Science - Faculty Report

As we bid farewell to another exhilarating term at LMHS, the Science Faculty is elated to share with you the remarkable journey our students have embarked upon in the world of science.

Bidding farewell to our Year 12 students has been bittersweet for our dedicated Science teachers. We have watched them blossom into young scientists, and it's with immense pride and a hint of nostalgia that we send them off into the world. To our Year 12 science students, we wish you the very best in your future endeavours. We are thrilled to hear that many of you have been selected for science-related programs at TAFE and universities. The sky is the limit, and we know you'll reach for the stars! We are particularly proud of our Science superstars Tiana Davey who came first in Biology and Earth and Environmental Science and Jessica Denniss who came first in Physics and Chemistry. Jessica has been awarded the Vice Chancellors Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Newcastle. These two outstanding young women are leading the way for female scientists in a typically male dominated field and we couldn’t be prouder!

In Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science, our students have been on a journey to unearth the secrets of our planet. They've conducted experiments to illustrate soil conservation techniques, realizing the crucial role vegetation plays in maintaining our environments. Our Year 11 Investigating Science students have tackled complex scientific concepts by creating scientific models, showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills. We are truly impressed by their dedication and innovation.

Our Year 10 classes delved deep into the fascinating world of genetics and evolution this term. Miss Hudson's class had a blast with a mock blood typing activity that had everyone on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the results. And who could forget the chocolate fossils experiment? A sweet treat for our budding scientists!

Year 9 was all about chemistry! Our students rolled up their sleeves and participated in a practical assessment task where they determined the reactivity of various metals. They also ventured into the atomic realm, creating models that vividly depicted the structure of atoms, including the intricate dance of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Year 8 students didn't hold back on the excitement this term. They embarked on a practical-based assessment task that involved creating vinegar-bicarb explosions - a spectacle that left everyone in awe! But the real shocker came when they tested various surfaces for the presence of bacteria and explored the impact of handwashing. The results were eye-opening, to say the least!

Our Year 7 students had a blast exploring the mysterious world of forces. From tug-o-war showdowns to using charged ebonite and Perspex rods to make light objects defy gravity, they've had hands-on experience with the forces that shape our world.

As we wrap up this incredible term, we can't help but look forward to what the next one has in store for us. Science is a never-ending adventure, and we're thrilled to have you all along for the ride. Until next time, keep questioning, keep exploring, and keep the scientific spirit alive!

10U English

10U had a busy Term 3, studying Shakespeare’s play King Lear and the 2003 film of the same title. The students then had to write a comparative essay, comparing how the film’s themes were adapted to a modern audience. The second part of their task was to work in groups where they became the teacher, asking questions and marking their peers responses, utilising a marking criteria. This is in readiness for next year when they embark on Senior study, with many of the students choosing to study Advanced English. Well done 10U, you demonstrated excellent collaborative skills in a very mature manner.

Wear it Purple and National Day of action against Bullying and Violence

🧡National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence & Wear it Purple Day - Pyjama Day!💜

On Friday the 18th August, LMHS celebrated the 'National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence' and 'Wear it Purple Day'!

Our guest speaker from the Mental Health Organisation Batyr attended to speak with students about the mental health app called OURHERD.

Corina Vargas the development manager of Batyr spoke to students in break one and two with her interactive prize wheel and engaged students in a positive talk about promoting mentally healthy behaviour.

The theme for this years 'National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence' was 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.

The theme for this years 'Wear it Purple Day' was 'write your story', placing emphasis on the importance of personal expression and individuality for rainbow youth. Write your Story’ promotes Visibility – allowing LGBTQIA+ youth to see themselves represented in the world around them. Crucial for those who may feel isolated, marginalised, or uncertain of their place in the world, as it can help to validate their experiences and provide a sense of belonging through expression and connection!"

LIFE LINE - OUR YEAR 10 COHORT PARTICIPATED IN MIND YOUR MATES

How do we know the signs that someone – one of your mates – is not necessarily coping or may be developing a mental health problem, especially when our familiar face-to-face gatherings are unavailable? Most of us have heard of or undertaken training in physical first aid, but, when it comes to mental health or emotional first aid, we are not so well trained or equipped.

This 45min ‘toolbox tool’ will enable you to recognise the signs of depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide in your mate. This presentation is delivered by Lifeline skills-for-life suicide prevention trainers.

NAME NARRATE NAVIGATE

COAST SHELTER attended LMHS weekly to facilitate a program called Name Narrate Navigate. The NNN program for young people focuses on psychoeducation and skill development for young people 12-18 years who are victims/perpetrators of violence. It is trauma-informed and culturally safe.

Twenty referred students participated in the NNN Program this term. The program will be on offer again in Term 4. NNN embraces a relational approach to work with youth violence. NNN focuses on validating trauma while recognizing the consequences of violence, supporting mindful engagement and the development of skills for self-awareness, self-regulation and connection.

NNN is focused on using ‘power-with’ young people to better understand their experience of violence.

NNN intentionally merges the neuroscience of trauma with Aboriginal ways of knowing and doing. NNN draws on tenets of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, Universal Design and Photovoice methods.

NATIONS OF ORIGIN

During the July School Holidays 11 students participated in the PCYC Police Nations of Origin event in Sydney. Nations of Origin is a multifaceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program that culminates around NAIDOC week annually.

Each year around 1,400 Indigenous & Non- Indigenous young people represent their Aboriginal Nation in Rugby League, Football fives, Basketball, Netball and Gymnastics to promote reconciliations within communities and celebrate Australia's diverse Indigenous culture.

The Aspire Program is a seven-week program designed for secondary school girls in yr 9 and 10.

I have been able to connect with some of the students and support them in many ways to be as positive as they can be. It is always a privilege to support young people on their journey through life.

I am available for any student, staff member or community member to talk about anything that is on your mind in a confidential manner.

I am on site at school on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s.

Thanks Everyone

Year Advisor Reports

Year 7 - Mr Alex Rogers

Congratulations Year 7! You’ve made it over the halfway mark and are well and truly on your way to a successful end of the year. I have been both honoured and challenged in my roll as your Year Advisor and I genuinely believe that we are starting to make more mature decisions and coming into our own as responsible members of the school community. Just a reminder that I am sharing this journey with you for the next 5 years and I hope that you will turn to me for guidance, advice and sometimes just a chat.

I hope that you keep yourselves busy and safe over the upcoming holidays. I am sure there will be heaps of boating, fishing, moto riding and being safe! I’m going to be landscaping and planting a productive rainforest style garden in the backyard. Considering the impending weather, I reckon being ‘Sun Smart’ is probably a good idea, I mean seriously, it’s like there is some sort of climate change happening, who would have guessed? Oh yeah, did I mention to be safe.

Thanks for all the hard work and resilience over the past three terms, I know it’s been challenging, but I feel like it’s all starting to fall into place. Keep up the great work and I’ll catch you on the flip side.

Mr Rogers

Year 8 - Mr Aaron Bolte

It’s been another busy term for Year 8 at Lake Munmorah High School. Students are working towards completing semester two assessment tasks and learning outcomes in their courses as well as being involved in many cultural, wellbeing and sports activities and excursions. A particular highlight being the Muru Bulbi Shield where selected Year 8 students celebrated coming together as a group, recognising our strong Aboriginal partnerships & participating in a sports gala day against Gorokan High School and Northlakes High school in Oz tag, Netball, Rugby League, and Soccer.

Regular attendance at Lake Munmorah High School is another huge focus (Department of Education endorsed key area), can we ask that you support your child, son, or daughter to attend school everyday and provide justified reasons if they are absent from school. Please contact, email the school, and provide medical certificates if away from school for an extended period. Also please encourage and support your child to attend every class during all periods. We do have truancy follow up processes in place at Lake Munmorah High School if students are not attending class where parents, carers and stepparents may be contacted.

Please encourage full school uniform to be worn, especially as we are approaching the warmer months of the year. We do have a uniform shop onsite and used (cleaned) uniforms for students who have grown out of their current school uniform. Please see the office or wellbeing team if there are any issues with uniform. Mr Keevill has been running a rewards barbeque for students in full school unform.

Please encourage your child, son, or daughter to report any wellbeing or bullying related issues to their teacher, year advisor, wellbeing team member or relevant deputy principal. We will follow up and support students and family if challenging situations arise.

We will be looking to do a ‘Focus’ fun activity day for Year 8 in Term 4. Please see Mr Bolte and suggest an activity we can organise to celebrate the end of Year 8 before moving into year 9, 2024.

Mr Bolte

Year 10 - Miss Emily Davis

One more term to go Year 10!

Term 3 is historically the busisest term of the school year but this term was non-stop for our Year 10 students. We had various wellbeing programs happening this term including: Ryda & Mind Your Mates. Not to mention the various extra curricula activities occuring for a variety of KLA's including the PDHPE Snow trip & Muri Bulbi Shield.

I was lucky enough to observe and participate in the RYDA day with Year 10 which as a PDHPE Teacher, I thought to be an immensely valuable learning opportunity for our Year 10's to engage in. The day ran very well with many students commenting on the impact the day had on their knowledge/attitudes towards safe driving habits. Many presenters were also very impressed with the behaviour of the year group as well, making comment on their maturity and insightful knowledge! (Well done Year 10).

I also want to take this opportunity to inform all Year 10 students and caregivers that the final Senior Jersey design has been voted on and orders will be established early next term! We have the company coming out to LMHS to allow students to try on jerseys for sizing (make sure you attend this to get the right size!!)

I wish all Year 10 a happy and safe break and look forward to seeing you all return for your final term as junior students!!!

Miss Davis

Year 11 - Mrs Sarah Patterson

Dear Year 11 students, parents/carers, and community members,

It is with great pride and excitement that I congratulate our Year 11 students for successfully completing their Preliminary Examinations. These exams marked a significant milestone on your academic journey as you prepare to embark on your final year of schooling. Your dedication and hard work have brought you this far, and I am confident you'll excel in future challenges. Your commitment to education and personal growth is commendable.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the nine outstanding nominees who applied for leadership positions within our school.
