Canbury School Newsletter

3rd JULY 2026. ISSUE 407

Head's Welcome

Dear Families, Phew, what a week at Canbury! As we come to the end of this incredible academic year, I found myself feeling exceptionally proud while reflecting on everything we have achieved during my speech at today's Prize Giving ceremony. For those parents and families who weren’t able to be in the room with us, I wanted to share just a few of the highlights of how our school values came to life this year:

  • Achieving: From the sheer determination on the slopes during our ski trip to the brilliant problem-solving at the whole school Business Day, our students have pushed boundaries. They’ve conquered climbing walls at White Spider, kayaked the Royal Canoe Club, and last but not least our Year 11's and 12's approached their recent public exams with immense maturity.
  • Inclusive: We celebrated our community both inside and out, from our whole-school talent show to our Diversity Celebration Week, where students visited various local places of worship, including the Year 7s visiting the Sikh Gurdwara in Ealing and the Year 11s visiting the Buddhist Temple in Wimbledon.
  • Respectful: Our Student Council and Prefects have championed green initiatives, while trips to RHS Wisley and workshops with guest speakers like Lewis Wedlock showed just how deeply our students respect the world and each other.
  • Supportive: We saw our community at its best when Year 7 and the Sixth Form joined forces to paint bird boxes and chat with our OAP neighbours. Plus, we may be a small school, but our community has an incredibly big heart. We achieved something truly monumental during our recent sponsored walk, raising over £2,000! This fantastic total will be split between two wonderful causes: Princess Alice Hospice and Maggie’s Place. A massive thank you to everyone who walked, cheered, and donated!"

To our parents and carers - thank you for your partnership, trust, and support this year. To our amazing staff - thank you for your tireless energy through everything from heat waves to inspections. Lastly to our students - your resilience, humour, and achievements are the heartbeat of Canbury. We are so proud of you all. Wishing you all a wonderful, safe, and restful summer break! Mrs Rich Head

What we've been up to

Thorpe Park

Tuesday saw many of our students have a wonderful trip to Thorpe Park! It's safe to say they loved every ride experience, and we haven't been able to deduce the top choice! The weather was kind by being dry but not too hot, and everyone showed Canbury Values throughout the day as we enjoyed this wonderful end of year treat together.

Hogsmill Nature Reserve

Those of us who didn't go to Thorpe Park enjoyed a relaxing time at the Hogsmill Nature Reserve in Kingston. We enjoyed bird watching, a nature walk, card games and learning all about the creatures and flowers from Max. The students also watched David Attenborough's Wild London and wrote about their day, as below.

Danai Today, we had a trip to Hogsmill, which is a Nature reserve, I really enjoyed my time there. We did some bird watching, I saw a swan, Canada geese and a coot! After that, we sat down and had a snack, we also played some fun card games. We were joined by Mrs Littler. Max also discovered some interesting insects and a mouse. Personally I’d recommend others to go there, although it is small, there is lots to see. Elizabeth & Nina Nina: I enjoyed the games we were playing and it felt like working as a team. Elizabeth: I liked bird watching and I got to see some Canadian geese, a swan, coots and ducks.  Nina: I also enjoyed it when we did the walk as well because it looked like being in a family. Elizabeth: Another one of my Hogsmill trip highlights was our nature walk, since we felt close to each other, we even saw an adorable little mouse! Nina: My favorite part of the trip was Mr. Stables was being sarcastic about the truck and said it was music. Elizabeth: Playing games with the group and looking at the insects with Max were also the best parts of the trip.  Nina: Overall the best part of the trip was sitting with Elizabeth and Danai on the bus on the way back. Elizabeth: For people who like nature or being in somewhere small, I would recommend Hogsmill Nature Reserve.  Archie I enjoyed it because it was small and quiet. My favourite part was when we played games and we went for a walk around the area and saw ducks in the pond. We saw mushrooms, worms and a mouse. I would recommend it to others.

Left to right on each row: green solider fly, buff tailed bumblebee (twice),  mining bee, mimick hoverfly, rose chafer beetle, red solder beetle, squash bug, sack spider,  Mr Mouse, hummingbird hawk moth, umbellifer, vipers buglos

Wimbledon

Eight of our students enjoyed a fantastic day at Wimbledon yesterday, where the sun shined and the tennis was superb - including seeing some action on Court One!

Summer House Quiz & Form Parties

We had a very fun morning for the last day of the academic year, enjoying our House Quiz and Form Parties. The latter saw a mix of treats games and films - including Jaws, Holes and Minions! Then well done to our quiz winners: Johnson - Sofia B and Lexi Campbell - Lysander, Lloyd, Same, Theo and Evan Noble - Issy, Carol, Noah and Mani With the overall House Quiz winner.... Campbell House!

Prizegiving Assembly

We rounded of our school year with our Prizegiving Assembly, and what a joyous occasion it was! Mrs Rich talked us through the year and how we have lived our Canbury Values, before Nicola Nardelli - Deputy Leader of Kingston Council - talked to us about her sturggles with dyslexia and that we all have our gift, so let's find it and reach the stars. Then we presented our house point awards, acaedim awards and effort awards before the Canbury Cups were also giving out. Lots of joy, lots of celebrations and lots of tears - we wish everyone a wonderful summer and the best for the future.

Lego

We loved William's Lego that we created in Wellbeing in record time!

SEND in the News

Each week we will be shining a spotlight on a different area of SEND that has featured in the news. This week, we want to share two articles from Neurodiverse Online. The first explores dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder, and how it can affect coordination, organisation, fatigue and daily tasks. The second looks at autism in women and girls, including why it can often be missed and how masking can impact wellbeing.

Dreamcatcher Film Camp at St Mary's University

A long-established filmmaking programme for young people aged 9–18. We have welcomed students from Canbury in previous years who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and again have an opportunity for students who may be interested ahead of the summer holidays. Now in its 17th year, Dreamcatcher offers young people the opportunity to write, act in, direct, film and edit their own short film over one creative week whilst working alongside industry professionals. It is a fast-paced, hands-on and highly collaborative experience designed to immerse students in the creative process, whether they are complete beginners or already passionate about drama, performance, film and storytelling.  The camps aim to give them a strong idea about the roles within the creative industries, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as the life skills that help young people thrive both in education and beyond.  This summer, we are also including two focused, additional masterclasses at no extra cost:

• Breaking into the Film & Creative Industries • Building Confidence, Presentation, Communication & Collaboration Skills

See the flyer and booking link below for those who may be interested, particularly those with an interest in drama, performance, storytelling and the creative arts.
