Outdoor Adventures

Nursery, spring term, week 10

This week we’ve been enjoying the great outdoors, discovering all sorts of animals and mini beasts. The children have loved exploring, asking questions, and learning new words about the natural world.

Our frogspawn has now hatched into tadpoles, and the children have loved watching the tiny wrigglers swim around. Not all of it hatched, but this led to some gentle, thoughtful conversations

Our focus story was Mad About Minibeasts, where we learnt lots of new vocabulary. The children have been very excited to head outdoors and spot mini beasts in their natural habitats.

Since we’ve been so good at caring for our tadpoles and mini beasts, we have some egg-citing news… On Monday, five duck eggs will be arriving! If we take good care of them, we’re hoping to welcome five fluffy ducklings by the end of the week to look after until Easter.

We have read lots of books for research purposes.

The children have been practising being gentle.
We've talked about ducks to build our vocabulary and understanding.

In other news, we had our very first forest school session this week! It’s a grass-roots project as we’re creating the space together on our school site. The children have thrown themselves into it, helping with a litter-pick and setting up our group-time circle.

Back in class, our writing focus has been on moving from left to right and top to bottom across the page — an important step that helps the children build confidence as little writers.

We've seen lots of lovely independent mark making, moving from left to right.

In maths, we’ve been exploring patterns, especially in the construction area. The children have enjoyed experimenting with flat and rounded blocks to create all kinds of shapes and designs.

A big thank you to Miss Davison, who has helped us dance through our learning about animals! She’s planning a little show of the children’s work for parents at home time before the Easter holidays — we’ll share the date as soon as we can.
