Each year, the Office of Undergraduate Studies recognizes two faculty members for excellence in teaching: one faculty member teaching in an Undergraduate Studies Program, and one faculty member teaching in a General Education Program.
To chose the recipients, we ask UMD undergraduates: Has a faculty member been a mentor or role model for you?
Changed or reinforced your career direction?
Improved your understanding of challenging material?
Made a difference in how you view the world?
This year's recipient of the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Office of Undergraduate Studies Programs is...
Professor Herald is truly exceptional. She demonstrates deep empathy toward her students. She is insightful regarding our efforts and sincerely recognizes hard work. Her classes are consistently engaging; every session offers fresh insights, and the interactive activities, such as hosting guest entrepreneurs, organizing business site tours, and facilitating group work, reinforce the material in meaningful ways.
This year's recipient for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in General Education is...
Dr. Butler helped us to understand and appreciate the challenging material by just being honest. When we would have issues as a group or with our community partner, he would actively listen to our concerns and take them into consideration before giving us advice on what to do. He made sure we knew he was a resource and wanted the best for all of us.
About the Awards
Based on undergraduate student nominations, the awards are named in honor of Donna B. Hamilton, former Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean for Undergraduate Studies. The two recognized faculty will receive $1,000 cash awards.
