"Koi Fish Macchia" by Isabel Ordu at Deer Park Middle Magnet School, Grade 6
I created a macchia which is a type of glassblowing technique when you make you design into a bowl-like shape based on work by Dale Chihuly. My motif was based off of a Koi Fish. I showed my motif by making the background of my Macchia Bowl consist of things related to the ocean; blues, star fish, and seaweed. After that, I made sure to draw the Koi Fish in a swimming motion to further represent themselves. During the melting process, my motif did change. When it melted, the edges of my plate curled up. After that, my design shrank and changed to what you see now. I then combined my Macchia and background together to allow it to hang on the wall or window.

1st Place

"Cheetah Eye" by Ugoamaka Iheoma at Deer Park Middle Magnet School, Grade 6
I chose to draw a cheetah eye because it’s my favorite animal. It is close to a human’s eye because it has all the same anatomy. The pupil is a circle and the iris is a circle. The big difference is that there is fur around the eye. I would change the black spots because I think they take away from the fur.

"The Secrets of Foie Gras" by Raine Lai at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 8
My idea for my Art for a Cause artwork was to draw three ducks in cages to keep it simple without any blood. The cause I chose was what happens to other animals for the food that people enjoy. I selected this cause to spread awareness of the many different ways that animal abuse can happen. My artwork raises awareness for my selected cause by visibly showing how the ducks are not happy in the situation and how claustrophobic the cages make them to be. From the background, it is very dark since the ducks have no sunlight in a closed room. The postmodern principle that I used was interaction of text and image by darkening the background by filling it with words about the food and how it is made. I used a relatively dark paper so lights would show better since there was barely any light anyway. I also used a normal pencil for shading, an eraser, and a white chalk pencil. I used these materials because I wouldn't need all that much to convey a sad message. This is my explanation for my Art for a Cause artwork called The Secrets of Foie Gras.

1st Place

"Turtle in the City" by Andrew Ho at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 8
My artwork is called the Turtle in the City. This artwork includes a turtle with a castle on its shell, flying over a city. It is drawn with ink pens of various sizes using a technique of shading. Also, this artwork includes depth as it shows buildings getting smaller and smaller and the main front buildings being big showing many fine details. The final assignment shows Surrealism effects with objects levitating, changing scale and transforming.

2nd Place

"still life" by Kyrah Proctor at Middle River Middle School, Grade 8

3rd Place

"Family Chaos" by Estella Brown at Ridgely Middle School, Grade 8
My portrait is of a younger me, my mom, my dad, and my aunt from a lower point of view. We are in a kind of pyramid shape, all overlapping each other, my dad being at the bottom. I chose a pen because whenever i am using a pencil i always erase a lot and try to make it perfect but i cannot erase the pen so it was a go with the flow kind of thing. I made texture by using circles, i was able to make depth and values easily because the pen was so dark. To me this painting represents my family and how chaotic we are. Overall, my drawing is important to me because it shows my family love and connections with each other.

Honorable Mention

"Self-Portrait" by Normandy Grimm at Southwest Academy School, Grade 8

Honorable Mention

"Still Life Balanced" by Rachel Li at Pine Grove Middle School, Grade 8
My untitled artwork consists of cups and fruit balanced on each other. The values, shading, and detail are the most obvious in my work. I used charcoal pencils and a blending stick to make this work. I also wasn't afraid to add extremely dark values to make certain items pop out from the background. I wanted to draw something with a lot of detail and clean. I learned how to use charcoal well. The final piece looks accurate, but it can always be improved.
