West Leigh Juniors Weekly News 21st november 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

As winter makes its presence felt with a sudden dip in temperature, our classrooms have been buzzing with warmth and excitement. Year 6 enjoyed an inspiring Shakespeare workshop that brought the Bard’s words to life in a truly memorable way. Meanwhile, we were delighted to welcome so many parents and carers to this week’s Year 5 presentations. These sessions offered a fascinating insight into the children’s recent learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings - thank you for joining us and celebrating their hard work!

Updates from the Office

  • Please ensure that you use the correct email address for the Junior School office; some parents are emailing the Infant school by mistake: office@wljs.porticoacademytrust.co.uk
  • If your plans change and your child no longer requires a place at After School Club, please inform the school office as soon as possible. This helps us ensure that staff are not searching for children who are expected but do not attend.
  • Please note that you are unable to add funds and book meals at the same time on Arbor. To ensure your child’s meals are booked successfully, you’ll need to add funds first, then go back into the system to select your child’s meals. Thank you for your understanding.

We are expecting our annual Travelling Book Fair visit during the week of 24th-27th November - just in time for Christmas! In addition to some exciting and entertaining new book titles suitable for children from age 6 to 12, there are also great stocking fillers and Christmas gifts in the Stationery Box. During the week, the children will have a chance to browse the Book Fair. Parents are able to attend the Fair with their children after school (until 3.45pm) from Monday to Thursday. We look forward to seeing you.

Year 3

The children have been working hard again this week as the weather has taken a seasonal, wintery turn! In English, we have planned a Stone Age adventure story based on a five-part narrative structure including an opening, build-up, dilemma, resolution and ending. They have also created a personal word bank of descriptive vocabulary which they will be able to use as their stories develop. We have begun looking at fractions with the children in maths, teaching them to recognise the numerator and denominator to identify fractions of both shapes and quantities. Conversations about fractions often seemed to involve food and the children were able to recognise that one half or two quarters of their favourite treat is actually the same amount. They have also been considering pairs of fractions that add together to make one whole. Science has continued to focus on the current topic of rocks. Children recalled some of their new geological vocabulary before going on to learn how fossils are created. They were then able to order the key elements of this process and to deduce that fossils are most often found in sedimentary rocks. In history this week, the children learned about the many inventions that originated in the Stone Age which have gone on to impact our lives today - not only the wheel, but the discovery of metal ores, ceramics and many more. The children enjoyed creating persuasive advertisements for some of these. Rehearsals for our Year 3 performance are still underway and it is encouraging to see the children growing in confidence. We will be carrying out a dress rehearsal for our performance next week and would be very grateful if costumes could be brought in to school on Monday. Thank you for your help.

Year 4

In English, the children have used the 5-part story structure to plan their own science fiction stories. They have used rich, descriptive vocabulary to write their story opening where the character and setting have been introduced. They have also written the build up to a key event and have included direct speech to show character interactions as the problem in their story unfolds. We look forward to completing the stories next week. As mathematicians, the children have been exploring area in a variety of hands-on and practical ways. They have counted squares to find the area of simple shapes and moved on to comparing areas to understand how shapes can differ even when they look similar. Applying their times-tables knowledge, they have also calculated the areas of squares and rectangles with increasing confidence. Some children even extended their learning by measuring and calculating the area of objects around the school, while others applied their understanding to solve real-life area problems. In science, we have explored volume. The children enjoyed using a micro:bit as a data-logger to record the volume of sound at specific distances from the source. The children recorded their results in a clear way and have used scientific vocabulary to draw conclusions. As part of our RE studies, the children used various sources to research a range of religious festivals including Christmas, Diwali, Eid and Hannukah. They created an informative poster to demonstrate their findings. In PSHE, the focus has been on our anti-bullying policy. The children have suggested ways to stand up to bullying and possible ways that the policy could be updated.

Year 5

It was so wonderful to see so many of our parents and carers this week at the Year 5 presentations. We saw, through their outstanding performances, how excited and proud the children were to share their enjoyment and in-depth knowledge about Warriors and Wayfarers with all of you.

Our English lessons this week have taken inspiration from one of our PSHCE units. Using the text, The Island by Armin Greder, the children have been asked to write with empathy about the plight of a stranger who arrived uninvited to an island. We considered terms such as prejudice and stereotype, relating these to the actions and thoughts of the inhabitants and how they treated the stranger. We also made links to current affairs regarding migration and the status of many displaced people. The children demonstrated a mature level of understanding and empathy, both in their discussion of this challenging topic and in their written work. Statistics in all of their forms have informed the children’s learning in maths lessons this week. We began by investigating the features of line graphs to solve a variety of problems. The children then reviewed their knowledge of reading and interpreting information presented in tables and particularly time-tables, and also how to use a time-line successfully to calculate time. Great excitement abounded as we introduced our first design and technology topic of the year. Over the next few weeks, the children will be practising a variety of woodwork skills, including sawing, joining wood and using glue guns. They will be creating a working cam toy with an Anglo-Saxon theme, which they have designed. This also makes strong links with upcoming science lessons on pulleys, gears and levers.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 have been exploring how shadows are formed in science, investigating the factors that affect their size and shape, making links to their knowledge of the material properties of objects and how light travels in straight lines. It has also been our autumn test week, and pupils approached their maths and English assessments with determination and maturity. They worked hard to show their understanding, identified areas for further development and celebrated the strengths that shone through. We were incredibly proud of how well they coped with the test conditions and the focus they displayed. A major highlight of the week was the visit from the Young Shakespeare Company who delivered a dynamic and captivating performance of Macbeth. Pupils were fully engaged throughout, participating enthusiastically and even taking on some of the roles within the production. This immersive experience greatly enhanced their appreciation of Shakespearean drama. In history, the children have been learning about significant individuals who migrated to Britain and the ways in which they have shaped society and culture. They also explored the experiences of the Windrush generation, gaining insight into the challenges they faced and showing genuine empathy as they discussed the impact of these events on communities past and present.

Online Safety

Tracking devices like AirTags and SmartTags were designed to help people find lost belongings, but they’ve also opened the door to worrying forms of misuse. Their compact size and subtle design make them easy to hide, which can lead to the unwanted tracking of people without their knowledge. From stalking and bullying to potential misuse by peers, these gadgets bring a range of risks that trusted adults must stay aware of. This guide examines the growing popularity of Bluetooth trackers, the most common ways they’re being misused, and how to spot signs that a child may be affected. With practical tips on detecting hidden devices, using the right apps, and starting important conversations, it’s a vital read for parents and carers looking to stay ahead of a fast-moving issue.

Year 6 Enjoy a Visit from the Young Shakespeare Company

Today, our Year 6 pupils were treated to an inspiring visit from the Young Shakespeare Company. A talented group of four actors delivered an engaging and energetic performance of Macbeth, bringing Shakespeare’s timeless story to life in a way that truly captivated the children. Throughout the session, pupils were invited to answer questions, explore key themes, and deepen their understanding of the play. Several children also had the exciting opportunity to join the actors on stage, taking part in scenes and experiencing the drama firsthand. It was a fantastic morning filled with creativity and confidence-building. We are incredibly grateful to the Young Shakespeare Company for providing such an enriching experience - one that our Year 6 pupils won’t forget.

Year 5/6 Boys' Football

Two teams competed in friendly football fixtures against Chalkwell on Thursday. Despite the freezing temperatures, the boys battled through and put on some great performances. A special mention to Jude for a fantastic second half hatrick! There were goals galore as both West Leigh teams were victorious. Thank you to the West Leigh parents who braved the cold to support the boys!

Boccia Workshop

Last Thursday, twenty children from across the school had the opportunity to attend a boccia workshop. They learned the rules of the game and took turns keeping score. As the workshop progressed, tactics came in to play with children trying their best to knock the other team’s ball out of the way to score a point! The children thoroughly enjoyed this session and demonstrated our Golden Values throughout the game.

Year 6 Dodgeball Competition

It was the turn of Year 6 this week to compete in Southend's dodgeball competition. There were extremely powerful throws, brilliant catches and remarkable dodges throughout the competition. The standard across Southend was incredible! West Leigh won 3 and lost 6 of their games. So many of our matches went right down to the wire but luck was not on our side on this occasion. Inspirational Person - Boyan Slat

This half term's inspirational person is Boyan Slat. At the age of 16, he noticed the awful pollution in the ocean and invented The Ocean Cleanup - a machine that removes plastic from the ocean without harming wildlife. He embodies our Golden Values of empathy, responsibility and integrity, especially through his care for the creatures living in the ocean.

Well done to those children who entered the last Showbie challenge - some of their wonderful entries are shown below. This half term's challenge is to design your own invention for helping the ocean - we look forward to seeing the children's creations!
