Non-attendance Interview Program in Schools (NIPS)
On Tuesday 29 August 2023, Gunnedah High School will be involved in an attendance initiative known as NIPS. The program will be run by a team of Home School Liaison Officer and an Aboriginal Attendance Officer.
The objective of NIPS is to reduce the number of unjustified absences by talking with students concerned and to raise awareness at school and home of the importance of regular attendance.
Students with attendance issues will be individually interviewed by this team to discuss any barriers to regular attendance. It will provide an opportunity for students to highlight any problems with their attendance (e.g. relationships, bullying, curriculum or health problems) and the school will then have an opportunity to address these issues.
If your child is interviewed, you will receive a letter outlining the process which was followed, including your child’s attendance information.
If you have any queries about NIPS, please contact Mrs Simone Carlyon or Mr Tom McNamara on 02 6742 0155.
EVERY DAY COUNTS! A day here or there doesn’t seem much but ….
Subject Selection Info Night: Year 8 and 10
Our Subject Selection Information Night was held on Thursday 17 August to help provide guidance to Year 8 and 10 students and their parents/carers in choosing subjects for the next two years of schooling.
Each faculty created beautiful displays to showcase the subjects on offer. (Gunnedah High has such an extensive range of subjects available - we are so fortunate!) Teachers answered all sorts of questions and chatted with students and parents/carers about potential study options.
Additionally, Year 10 students and their parent/carer met with a head teacher to talk about their selections and help finalise their pattern of study.
Year 10/11 Excursion
Year 10 and Year 11 travelled to the Gold Coast in Week 4 for our excursion. We had a massive bus trip up, with multiple stops along the way to stretch our legs and fuel up for the karaoke on the bus. When we arrived, we were treated with amazing food and beautiful accommodation. We were staying right on the beach, only about 50 metres away.
Straight up on Tuesday we were thrown into surfing with Matt and some local students who taught us the ropes. We had some natural born surfers – Chloe Ellery, Logan, Savannah, Chucky and Phoebie. After surfing, we were split into two groups – Year 10 went canoeing and Year 11 completed some team building activities and went rock climbing. Millie, Phoebie and Miss Hyde’s canoe team were the best after they sorted themselves out. Kane, Kye and Ellie were amazing rock climbers and Cooper and Chucky were great leaders in the team building challenges.
On Wednesday we ventured to Dreamworld where Ash almost vomited after the Giant Drop and Rheggie was the biggest adrenaline junkie. After dinner, we had some karaoke time and we discovered that Nic is a natural-born singer and Timmy loves Slim Dusty. That night a few of us went fishing and Kaiden caught a leopard shark and Jackson caught two bream.
Thursday rolled around and we swapped the canoeing and rock-climbing activities before we went on a peaceful bush walk around Burleigh Head National Park. We had the most tastiest gelato and nicest beach swim before heading home to get ready for late night shopping. We went to Pacific Fair where most boys spent their pay at Culture Kings and the teachers had a break from us.
Friday’s trip home was a long one but went fast as most slept on the bus.
We would like to thank Miss Constable, Miss Hyde, Ms Riley, Bruce, and Ash for taking us there and we encourage all year groups to attend their end of year excursions.
Gunnedah High, now more accessible
Gunnedah High is now more inclusive and accessible for our students and staff. We've installed and upgraded a number of ramps, ensuring that anyone with mobility issues can safely access our ground floor classrooms.
Our next big step is the construction of a lift, making classes on the second floor possible for everyone. We're aiming to have it completed by the end of this year.
NAIDOC Week exhibition
Our talented students submitted a large number of artworks for the annual NAIDOC art exhibition. This year's theme, 'For Our Elders,' was beautifully represented in their creations.

In the Classroom
Hotdogs on the menu
Miss Popple's Year 9 Food Technology class planned and cooked a variety of hotdogs for their food styling activity. Almost the whole school could smell these delicious 'dogs cooking!
What's cooking with Miss Popple
Students in years 7, 8, and 9 have learned new skills in their practical lessons and had a tasty meal. Bonus!
Sushi-tasting takes students on a journey through Japan
Miss Smith’s 8 HSIE C class were recently treated to a delicious taste testing of sushi to complement their current learning about the history and culture of Japan.
Miss Smith presented the class with a beautiful sushi smorgasbord created by local Gunnedah business, Gunn Sushi. The sushi was meticulously prepared to showcase the finesse and craftsmanship of the Japanese culinary tradition.
The students sampled an array of flavours, ranging from crab, tuna and salmon to cucumber and avocado, all artfully rolled into the sushi. A favourite amongst the boys were the chicken rolls!
The aim of the tasting is to enrich the students understanding of Japanese culture, the focus of their current History assignment, and to help bridge the gap between computer-based research and real-world engagement.
For some, it was their first encounter with sushi, and their curiosity was met with a burst of flavours and textures that mirrored the intricate layers of Japan's history. The event sparked conversations throughout the class about presentation aesthetics, ingredient choices, and the intersection of food with culture.
The students left the class with smiles on their faces, full bellies, and a heightened cultural appreciation for Japan. By providing students with a tangible, sensory experience, the is aim to promote a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and historical understanding.
Wind turbine challenge
In recognition of National Science Week, 7 Gali and 7 Yaraay had a Wind Turbine Challenge to see who could build the most efficient blades to power a windmill and pick up the most weight.
Jannali and Fayra of 7 Gali designed the most efficient wind turbine that lifted 45g in total. Well done, girls!
Close runner-ups were Cooper of 7 Gali, and Dustin, Nate, Cleal, Harley, Lachlan and Clancy of 7 Yaraay.
Well done to all of the students for their design efforts!

Tenpin Bowling competition
Recently four students from Gunnedah High travelled to Tamworth for the North West Tenpin Bowling competition.
The team played against six other teams in the hope to qualify for the State titles, to be held in Sydney later this year.
In a thrilling and close-scoring game, Rhyse, Bailey, Jacob and Addison ended up in second place which earned them a spot in the State Finals!
Each member demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship and skills throughout the day, representing Gunnedah High School’s core values.
Thank you to all the staff who helped make the day possible, and good luck to our qualifying students for Term 4!
The view from Pensioners
Our walking group walked up Pensioners Hill recently - a special request from Miss Popple who was keen to see the view. We had a group photo at the top with Mr Moore and our vital SLSOs. Thank you to all the students who helped make Miss Popple's first look at this beautiful lookout a joy. Everyone represented our school wonderfully.
