Vets to Wings

A new partnership between the University of North Dakota and the Federal Aviation Administration, helping to get the careers of future commercial pilots take flight. (National Guard story and photos by Senior Master Sgt. Michael Knodle, 119th Wing Public Affairs)

Vets to Wings is part of a $2.5 million program created by congress to provide funding for veterans and reserve component members to help offset the cost of flight training at the University of North Dakota.

“It was almost life changing, because the commercial aviation program can cost up to two hundred thousand dollars. With this program and tuition assistance through the guard, my schooling is almost free.” said 119th Aircraft Maintenance Staff Sgt. Josephine Ebertowski.

The goal of the program is to provide a path for veterans, guard and reserve members to obtain Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification needed for a career as an airline pilot. The University of North Dakota is the first school participating in the program with plans to expand opportunities to other flight schools throughout the nation.

The program is open to all reserve component members and veterans who have a private pilots license and plan on pursuing a career with a commercial airline.

“My plans are now to commission as an Air National Guard pilot and go on to work for an airline at the same time” said Ebertowski.

There are currently seventeen Happy Hooligans participating in the Vets to Wings program.

The program is not only beneficial in helping the students cover the considerable costs of education, but it also provides a means of addressing a national pilot shortage that is challenging the airlines as well.

“I would fully recommend this program to anyone who wants to pursue an aviation career. It’s not only just the funding, they create a little community. They have brought in people from all over the industry to come and talk with us and you build relationships with people from different branches.” said Ebertowski.
