Important Dates

September 4th - NO SCHOOL

September 13th - Early Release @ 1:15pm.

Homework Site

Our homework site is up and running. If your child has a question about their assignments once they are home, you can check out the EMS website to find out what they need to complete.

Log in to: https://ems.eudoraschools.org/

Click on ACADEMICS, and then on 6th GRADE. Once you have the calendar pulled up, find today's date and you can see what assignments your child is responsible for.

Technology Reminder

We use our chromebooks everyday at EMS. It is extremely important that your child has (1) A chromebook, (2) Their charger - in the event that their computers are not charged and (3) Working headphones or ear buds.

Power School and Checking Grades

This year, your child will be checking his or her grades regularly with their SOAR teacher every Monday. We will also touch base weekly with students on their missing assignments in power school and create a plan to complete those assignments.

We also need your help. If you have not already downloaded the app, please do so. Not only will we be touching base on Monday with your student but we are asking you to touch base once a week at home as well. (Please note that teachers typically upload grades once or twice a week, so checking power school everyday may not be accurate. If your child does have a question about an assignment, please encourage them to reach out to that teacher specifically).

Science

Science is off to a great start! We are learning about characteristics of scientists and how we can apply those characteristics to be successful in sixth grade and beyond. This past week we reviewed the steps for the scientific method and we will continue to dive into that. Our next unit will be Waves, which will start mid-September.

Social Studies

In 6th grade Social Studies, we learn about ancient civilizations and world religions. First up, we are learning about the ancient Mesopotamians and Ancient Sumerians

ELA

This month we will be reading a novel together called, Freak the Mighty. Students will be working on various skills within this novel and complete a creative project at the conclusion of the book.

Students will be reviewing various grammar topics this month as we begin our fears and phobias unit.

Math

In math we are currently working on decimal and Fraction operations. Students have homework almost daily. We will be completing the first unit in mid September so make sure your student is completing their homework so they get plenty of practice and do not fall behind.

PE / Health

PE will be finishing up the volleyball unit in September. We will then begin a new unit called Sabakiball which will focus on throwing, catching, movement and teamwork. We will continue to be doing our workouts and try to get outside as much as possible. In Health, we will begin focusing on the four types of health.
