Sim News Brief Newsletter of the ECU Brody School of Medicine Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program

Fall 2023

Announcements

Healthcare Simulation Week is September 18-22, 2023. This week celebrates professionals who use simulation to improve the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare delivery. The BSOM Simulation Center has educational resources available for faculty, staff, and students. Please contact us if you would like a tour!

If you anticipate needing access to the Center over Thanksgiving (Nov. 23-24, 2023) or winter break (Dec. 22-Jan. 2, 2024), please contact us to make arrangements.

The BSOM Simulation Center now has the Surgical Science/Simbionix Ultrasound Mentor Male Simulation Platform that has modules for Sonography basic skills, bedside echocardiography, eFAST and RUSH, and more.

Simulation Stars

Dr. Bill Price for teaching the Central Venous Line course for over 10 years!

The Standardized Patients from the Office of Clinical Skills for their participation in BSOM Simulation programs. Standardized patients help students learn by portraying real patients and their family members in clinical situations.

Program Activity

Simulation faculty and staff trained all incoming first year medical students in Basic Life Support and First Five Minutes® crisis intervention during their first few weeks of medical school. They will participate in over 30 different simulation sessions during their four years at Brody.

ECUHealth Pediatrics coordinated interdisciplinary simulation sessions for senior residents, NICU fellows, pediatric attendings, and advanced practice providers. This multi-day program included procedural skills, teamwork activities, and NRP and PALs scenarios.

ECU School of Dental Medicine held an IV Access practice lab for dental residents. This session is a great example of just-in-time training since the residents were about to begin a conscious sedation rotation in regional oral surgeons’ offices.

Department of Physician’s Assistant Studies students participated in ACLS and PALS scenarios. They also held skills sessions to practice using a slit lamp, managing epistaxis, central lines, and IV/IO placement.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program participated in rehab-related scenarios including pediatric seizure and spinal cord injury.

BSOM M2 students participated in clinical application scenarios where they had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in order to assess, diagnose, and treat acutely ill patients.

Emergency Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine held multi-day boot camps to prepare the incoming interns and fellows for the hospital setting.

BSOM M3 and M4 students continue to rotate through the Simulation Center as part of their simulation and skills elective.

ECU Health EastCare held new hire airway courses, clinical performance assessment sessions, and continuing education courses.

Emergency medicine residents participated in a neurology-focused conference where they practiced identifying stroke symptoms, lumbar punctures, and managing a patient with a neurological deficit.

Dr. Amy Gilleland taught Pulmonary and Critical Care fellows in small group sessions how to manage a difficult airway and place a chest tube.

ECUHealth Respiratory oriented Pitt Community College respiratory therapy students to equipment in the Children’s Hospital. BSOM Simulation assisted by providing equipment on which the students could learn.

Scholarly Activity and Outreach

Emily Tate, BSOM M2, presented her summer project at the Medical Student Scholarship Forum: Virtual Reality in Simulation-Based Education: Is It Effective in Teaching Clinical Competency in Point-of-Care Ultrasound Techniques?

BSOM Simulation hosted the NC State Highway Patrol for a day of training for emergency situations where SHP troopers may be the first responders, including childbirth, burns, drownings, spine injuries, and more. This collaboration was featured by ECU News.

Becky Gilbird, David Schiller, Dr. Jennifer Bennett, and Dr. Skip Robey are leading a virtual presentation for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Directors’ Interest Group on Development and Implementation of a Mobile Simulation Program in September. This presentation will be broadcast to an international audience and promote ECU as a leader in the field of simulation!

Special Thanks

A BSOM alumnus, Dr. Patrick O’Malley, donated suture kits and an online course to students to use as part of the M2 Doctoring Skills class.

BSOM M2 students are all smiles as they receive their new suture kits!
