Tutorial: Picacho Peak Wildflower Watch Getting started with Premiere Pro

Welcome to our tutorial on Premiere Pro basics. Below there is a recording of the demonstration as well as step-by-step instructions

What we will be creating:

Contents:

  1. Project Set Up
  2. Add and Edit Audio
  3. Add and resize images
  4. Add video clips
  5. Transitions
  6. Titles and graphics
  7. Motion effects for images
  8. Export final project

1. Project Set Up

These steps will explain how to organize your files, start your project, and add assets to your project.

CREATE A NEW PROJECT

1. Name your project 2. Choose the save location 3. Click "create"
  1. Open Premiere Pro and click "New Project". Take a moment name your project and choose were the project file will be saved (this is the .prproj that holds your edits).
  2. You can add files at this time but in our demonstration we will use the project "Bin" to manage assets

Set Up Your Workspace

The Premiere Pro workspace is completely customizable, these are our recommended settings for getting started but feel free to customize as you like!
This workspace keeps all the common tools readily available
  1. Go to Window>Workspace and select "Editing"
  2. Go to Window>Essential Graphics
  3. Go to Window>Essential Sound
  4. You can also click and drag the edges of panels to resize them
  5. Double-click where it says "import media to start" and select the "Picacho 2023" you downloaded for this tutorial
The bin is where we will navigate to find our assets and build our video sequence.

2. Add Voice Over and Soundtrack

We will begin our sequence by adding our voice over and soundtrack. In this particular project the voiceover will set the length of our video. For other projects this may be your A Roll.

Add and trim the Voice Over

  • In your bin, double click "Picacho 2023" and open the "Audio" folder.
  • Find the file named "voiceover.wav" and drag in to the "A1" track in your sequence.
  • Click and drag the end of the clip to trim the portion without sound.
After dragging the "voiceover" file to your sequence to the A1 track, click and drag the end of the clip to trim the portion without sound.

Add and extend the sountrack

  • Add the other audio file named "Cinematic Atmosphere..." into the A2 track in your sequence. Notice the soundtrack is shorter than our voiceover.
  • Use the "Remix Tool" (click and hold on the 3rd tool and select "Remix Tool") to utilize Adobe's Sensei AI and extend the song:
The "Remix Tool" is in the "drawer" of the "Ripple Edit" tool. Click and hold to select this tool.
  • Click and drag the end of the click to extend the soundtrack using generative AI. If it comes up a little short try dragging a little further than the voice.
  • Press "V" on your keyboard to switch back to the "Selection Tool"
The Remix Tool can extend instrumental tracks by using generative AI.

Adjust the volume of the soundtrack

Reducing the soundtrack volume allows us the hear the voice over again.
  • Click on the soundtrack clip and go to your "Essential Sound" panel (window>"essential sound" if you do not see it"
  • Go to the bottom of this panel and set the "Clip Audio" to minus 17db
  • You can also use this panel to clean up and adjust audio

3. Add and resize images

For this step we will add an intro image and 3 images of wildflowers in their respective parts of the sequence in relationship to the voiceover. We will also resize the images using the "Effect Controls" panel. We will add motion at the very of this project.

4. Add video clips

For this part we will add video clips from the "Video" folder in our bin. Feel free the add whichever clips you like and whatever order you like while being mindful of your clip order.

5. Add transitions

Transitions will help our separate clips and photographs run together in a more visual pleasing way. This will remove "jump cuts" from our project-- a suddent change from one clip to another.

6. Add titles and graphics

In this section we will add the intro title as well as labels to each of the wildflower photographs. This method can be used to add other graphic overlays as well.

7. Add motion effects to the photographs

In this section we will add motion to our photographs (scale and place transformations) to create a more engaging viewer experience. Through the use of keyframes we can make Premiere Pro pan and zoom on static images, giving the illusion of motion.

8. Export project to .mp4 format

With the "Export" workspace we can easily create a final video file of our project that can then be uploading to streaming service or shared out to other stakeholders.
