KC News Round Up Friday 15th September 2023

The First Swim!

Pupils have been shown the new swimming pool in their Sport and Wellbeing lessons, ahead of swimming lessons starting next week. For our youngest pupils in Nursery and Reception they had the opportunity to see several Sport scholars having the first swim! We look forward to welcoming families on Friday 15th to see the pool.

Year 7 Team Building & Parents' Social

At the end of their first week, Year 7 pupils took part in team building games on the Astro led by their form tutors, followed by a movie in the theatre. It was wonderful to welcome their families in the evening for a drink and to meet each other.

Boarders' Activities

Taskmaster

Last Saturday our junior boarders in Hawkwell & Hargreaves took part in a team building task master challenge! Despite the blistering heat they managed a variety of tasks that had them taking selfies around the school grounds, for example, eating pieces of fruit the fastest without using their hands, making TikTok style videos about friendship and creating movie titles out of Lego! Much fun was had, and new friendships forged.

This week our new Head and Deputy Head of Boarders, Ping Ping and Jazmine, organised House Games in the J&O garden to give the boarders a break from their studies and some time to enjoy each other's company in a fun and happy way!

HALO Lecture

Mrs Levett kicked off the HALO lectures for the Autumn term with a brilliant lecture about the number of senses we have and whether we actually have more than five. Mrs Levett's lecture challenged pupils to consider other senses and pupils enjoyed getting hands on to fully experience the important role they play in our lives.

"I really enjoyed the HALO lecture yesterday! It was interesting to learn about our senses in such a practical way that kept everyone engaged. I found it interesting to learn that we had more than the 5 senses we are always taught about! It was also fascinating to learn about how other people experience the world with heightened senses and helped broaden my knowledge of sensory disorders." Lexi, Lower Sixth

Mrs Quigley, Head of AIMS, has organised a full schedule of HALO talks for the Autumn term on a variety of topics so please come along if something interests you. All are welcome.

HEP Talk

Lisa and Carrie

We welcomed Carrie along with Lisa from last year's Upper Sixth to speak at the new Lower Sixth Higher Education Programme (HEP) talk. Carrie gave them her advice on what she wished she had known in the Lower Sixth including the importance of being organised, using 'frees' to best effect, writing essays, managing workloads and getting in involved in all that KC has to offer.

'STEP INTO THE NHS' Award

Last term pupils in Years 7 to 9 took part in a competition to choose an NHS career that interests them and research the career's key responsibilities, skills, experience and qualifications. This is then used to create a fun and lively job advertisement to appeal to their peers. We are delighted that Addi (now in Year 10) was awarded Best in School. The whole of Years 7 to 9 are congratulated for taking part.

Equestrian Success

Congratulations go to Esme in Year 11 and Charlotte in the Upper Sixth who competed in the British Eventing National Under 18 championship at Chillington Hall in Wolverhampton last weekend.

Competing against 80 riders, Esme came 9th and Charlotte came 3rd which is an amazing achievement as they were against the best under 18’s in the country at that level. All regions were represented the UK and the South East team came fourth in the team competition, largely due to Esme and Charlotte’s final placing.

Gymnastics Taster Session

This week, we had a great turn out for the Senior gymnastics taster session, with some of our new Year 7 coming along too. Please contact Mrs Cox if you’d like to pop along next Wednesday to try it or if you would like more information on the gymnastics opportunities at KC.
