Class of 2001 Then & Now

We asked classmates to answer the following questions... In 2001, what was your major and the main extra-curricular you were involved in. Additionally, what was your first job after Bowdoin? In 2026, where are you now located? Are you doing what you always thought you would? What are you most excited about for Reunion? Any other life updates?

Nate Anderson

2001

Probably best known as the "computer guy" on campus, having worked at the IT help desk for my entire run at Bowdoin. About to utilize my highly lucrative Japanese history and biology double major to go teach English in Nagasaki for the next 2 years. Bought my first cell phone. Ordered the first two seasons of the Sopranos on DVD to keep me company overseas.

2026

Boomeranged back to Portland ME in 2022 with my wife and now 10 and 13 year old kids. I've spent the last 20 years working in non-profit education, mostly focused on implementing college workforce programs for working adults with a company called Jobs for the Future (although I'm now freelance). It's not the most natural pathway from teaching English in Japan. But it has consistently been about education for me, which I think was in no small part shaped by my experience at Bowdoin. I LOVE living in Maine. Looking forward to the great thaw so the family and I can get outdoors again. I'm not on social media so this is truly going to be an old school reunion for me - looking forward to it!

Jeremy Arling

2001

Major: Biology and Environmental Studies

Extra-curricular: BOCA (Now BOKA?)

First job after Bowdoin: Evergreens

2026

I'm living in the DC area with my wife and two kids (ages 10 and 12). I've just left my job at the EPA where for the last 20 years I've been working on protecting the stratospheric ozone layer. Last month I started a new job at NRDC on climate superpollutants.

Seth Barnes

2001

Major: English & Philosophy

Extra-curricular: Women's Hockey PA Announcer

First job after Bowdoin: Publishing

2026

Los Angeles, Ecommerce Entrepreneur, 2 Kids and 2 Dogs!

Ross R. Barton

2001

Major: Physics and Government double major.

Extra-curricular: Was a member of the Meddiebempsters during my senior year.

First job after Bowdoin: After Bowdoin, I more or less got my act together and went to Washington & Lee University for law school. I graduated law school in 2004 and started work at Pillsbury Winthrop LLP in DC in 2004.

2026

In 2007, I joined Alston & Bird LLP and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. I became a Partner at the firm in 2013. I am a patent litigator and trial lawyer specializing in telecommunications litigation in U.S. District Courts throughout the country and the International Trade Commission. I met my wife (Ashley) at W&L, and we got married in her hometown of New Orleans in 2008. We have two kids - Julie (15) and James (13) - who spend their summers up in Kennebunk Beach each year. Between lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer games, we travel frequently and spend as much time as we can skiing and fishing. Although my immediate group of friends from Bowdoin has remained relatively close, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with so many of the people that I recall well but with whom I've fallen out of touch.

John Behar

2001

Major: I double majored in Economics and Government, with a minor in Philosophy.

Extra-curricular: I was on the Ultimate Frisbee team for all four years, and loved spending time with that community on and off the field.

First job after Bowdoin: After graduating I worked at the hedge fund Bridgewater Associates for ten years, where I mostly focused on risk management and portfolio optimization.

2026

After living in Connecticut and then San Francisco after graduation, I moved to Bainbridge Island, WA about 11 years ago. I think/hope that Bainbridge will be my permanent home and enjoy the amazing opportunities the PNW offers to hike, camp, kayak, and mushroom forage. I love having easy access to Olympic National Park and enjoy exploring the woods and mountains there and giving back through volunteer trail work. While I expected to stay in the finance industry long-term, after ten years I found I was no longer passionate about the work. I changed course completely and started working in the nonprofit space, with a focus on alleviating global poverty. My current (and favorite) job is one I never would have anticipated when I was at Bowdoin. My wife, Meghann Riepenhoff, is a talented artist, and I'm lucky enough to manage her art studio. (Many thanks to Peter and Joanna Sheridan for introducing Meghann and me, just like I introduced Peter and Joanna at Bowdoin!) It's a wide-ranging job: I handle everything business related, help her make artwork in beautiful natural environments, cultivate mushrooms she makes ink out of, and anything else that needs doing so that she can make great art.

Jamie Bennett

2001

Major: I majored in Government and Legal Studies and Spanish.

2026

I reside in Ashland, MA with my husband and 13-year old son. I was honored to be recently (November 2025) sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Juvenile Court of Massachusetts. Prior to that, I was the Attorney in Charge of the Youth Advocacy Division for the Committee for Public Counsel Services. I was a Public Defender for over 19 years!

I work at an architecture firm in Portland and freelance as farm hand and handyman on the horse farm. I didn't expect to end up back in Maine, but I am happy to be raising my family here. Brunswick, Maine My husband (Ryan Ravenscroft '99) own and operate an organic flower farm just 8 minutes from Bowdoin's campus (a big, and intentional departure from our days in tech banking and higher ed philanthropy in Boston). We started the farm in 2018, as a way to sow smiles and community connection through flowers and teach our children how to take care of our environment (e.g., use regenerative farm techniques). We couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to give back to a community that's given us so much over the years. We're thrilled to share this journey with our two children Merritt (8) and Hazel (2) and our two bulldogs Peary and Willa. I'm most looking forward to reconnecting with friends that I haven't seen in years and sharing some laughs!

Russell Sherwood

2001

Major: I arrived on campus expecting to major in German (my first true love) and Economics. I was so desperate to consume anything related to Germany and Europe while on campus and spend junior year in Berlin that I ended up "only" being a German major with a minor in history. I then spent the next four years battling through math and economic courses in German in the undergraduate economics program at Humboldt University in Berlin and then in French at graduate school at the University of Geneva.

Extra-curricular: Running XC and Track freshman and sophomore years before I left for Berlin was the best part of my Bowdoin experience. So many amazing runs, so many amazing people, and I've been running and competing in races ever since. I don't think I would be the same person today without BBXC.

First job after Bowdoin: My first real job after Bowdoin was with UBS in Zurich. I spent ten years there before moving to the bank where I am now, a family-owned Geneva private bank. In between the two jobs, I spent six months in St. Petersburg to learn Russian and ended up meeting my wife, Sasha (my real true love).

2026

In 2025, Sasha and I moved from Zurich to a small town along Lake Geneva with our two kids, Aidan (5) and Alice (3). My son is in his first year at the local school and attends a Russian-language school on Wednesdays. It's been a big change for me to leave the German-speaking world after so many years, but we've all adapted well and are enjoying the mix of Swiss and international communities that make Geneva what it is.  I was doing a master's degree in international relations in 2003 (thinking of a career in foreign service or international organizations) and walked into a job in private banking at UBS. Looking back at my earliest days at Bowdoin and the decisions I made, I am doing exactly what I wanted to do—that is, living in Europe, speaking multiple languages daily and working in international banking and finance. My family isn't able to join me from Switzerland, so I'm looking forward to sharing the reunion with my dad, Tom, catching up with classmates and of course going on some runs!

First job after Bowdoin: Teaching English in Santiago, Chile

2026

I'm back in Portland, OR, which isn't exactly what I imagined but hey, family. I just started my own sustainability consultancy and I guess that's pretty on-brand for me. I also spend a lot of time volunteering at my local humane society working with many of the most behaviorally challenged dogs, so I feel lucky to have built a career that gives me time to do that. Most surprising is that I run a lot because no one at Bowdoin College ever saw this girl put on a pair of running shoes, but living in NZ changed that for me. I'm most looking forward to just being in Maine again, some whoopie pies, running on the coast, and catching up with people I haven't seen in a long time!

Still in Philadelphia, and practicing law as in-house counsel for Aramark (for the last 17 years). My husband, Jared, and I were married in Boothbay Harbor in 2010 and have the most amazing daughter, Ezra (age 11, Bowdoin '37!). In spare time, I am still singing, doing house restoration projects, wrenching on old Swedish Iron and teaching a business law negotiation and drafting course at Penn Law (my other alma mater). I get back to Bowdoin often (as rising chair of the Alumni Fund Directors) but super excited to join our classmates in May for an outstanding 25th reunion! Can't wait to see everyone.

Major: Asian studies

Extra-curricular: Squash Team

First job after Bowdoin: Teaching English in Chengdu, China

2026

Where are you now: Westwood, MA Are you doing what you always thought you would: Yes?! I don't know if I had any specific expectations post Bowdoin for my career or life but I feel very fortunate to be able to use what I learned at Bowdoin in my professional life frequently. What are you most looking forward to at Reunion: English muffin bread from wild oats and soup for breakfast. Being on campus and experiencing how Bowdoin is different and similar from the late nineties. How do Jack Magee’s calzones compare to what I made when I worked there, for instance? I’m hoping to play some squash with whoever is willing. And I’m hoping to have a few cosmic sightings of my dear friend, advisor and mentor Kidder Smith – his lanky, light, eccentric walk across the quad was one of my favorite things to witness at Bowdoin. RIP Kidder.

2026

Where are you now? At home in Westwood, MA, just back from a backcountry ski trip with Bowdoin friends in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana Are you doing what you always thought you would? Yes, I’m a writer. I wouldn’t have guessed that I would marry Liz Steffey and we’d have three daughters, two dogs (and other furry pets), and live in NYC and, during the pandemic, in Maine. My college self would have been surprised to learn I’d be called “princess daddy” by my kids and would love country music, women’s hockey, tofu-based cooking, and home décor. I’d have been excited to know that I published two non-fiction books and would be on track to finish my first novel. What are you most looking forward to at Reunion? Hearing about everyone’s lives and memories. Telling you about my family, our daughters, our dogs, and our recent outdoor adventures. Hoping to arm wrestle with Pat Hultgren and win trivia somewhere.

Santa Clara, CA I've had an amazing journey through various levels of higher education in California and now have the opportunity to support faculty across the state and influence legislation and educational regulations as part of state-wide faculty leadership with the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges. I have been teaching at De Anza College in their Chemistry Department for 14 years and still really enjoy supporting students and faculty. Shout out to Dr. Broene for showing me what a great instructor is. Unfortunately, these responsibilities will keep me from reunion this year, but I was very much looking forward to seeing the changes to campus and reconnecting with classmates. In other news, my wife Ammy and I celebrated our 15 year anniversary last October and are looking forward to our daughter, Athena, starting high school next year. We love traveling together and snuggling our three cats when at home.

Class Gift Progress

So far, this fiscal year, 112 members of our class have donated $98,250 to the Alumni Fund. We are looking to meet (and hopefully exceed) our goal of 172 donors by Reunion. The link below includes a list of classmates who have made their gift.

Alumni Directory

You may have seen that there is a new alumni directory to help us all keep in touch. It is much simpler to use than the old website, and you can find people by location as well as by name. Please take a few minutes to complete your profile:
