Booth Wood Academy News

It has certainly been a fun‑packed half term at Booth Wood Academy, filled with exciting experiences and wonderful achievements across the school.

Cherry Class (Reception)

We have had a fantastic half term in Reception, filled with exciting learning experiences. One of our highlights was our trip to the post office, where we proudly posted our letter to the Prime Minister! We have also enjoyed lots of planting activities, observing how things grow and change over time. In maths, we have been working hard to deepen our understanding of numbers using tens frames and part–whole models. We are also incredibly proud of our progress in phonics, particularly with writing short sentences and learning new sounds.

Year 1

It has been a very busy and productive half term in Year 1. In English, the children explored persuasive writing, using bossy verbs and ambitious adjectives to encourage visitors to their designed castles. In maths, we have been learning about numbers to 100 and money, showing great determination. In science, the children have learned about plants and can now name their parts and discuss which plants we can eat.

Year 2

This term has been full of exciting learning opportunities. In science, the children explored living things and visited a farm to see animals and their habitats. In history, we learned about Ancient Egypt. In maths, we focused on problem-solving, and in English, we explored Little Red Riding Hood. Pupils also enjoyed Lego Club across KS1 and KS2.

Year 3

Year 3 have enjoyed a creative half term. In history and DT, they created Greek-style buildings. In art, they explored landmarks and shading techniques through detailed drawings. In science, they carried out a celery experiment to observe capillary action.

Year 4

Year 4 explored aliens and dragons in English, creating persuasive speeches. They welcomed Severn Trent to learn about water safety and the 3 P’s. A visit to Thinktank Science Museum included a light show, interactive exhibits and a planetarium visit.

Year 5

Year 5 completed Bikeability training, developing cycling skills and road safety awareness. The children showed enthusiasm, resilience, and responsibility throughout.

Year 6

Year 6 had a busy and successful term. They approached SATs with maturity and determination. They represented the school at a tennis event and visited Warning Zone to learn about personal safety. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and independence.

Sporting Achievements

Another busy and successful half term of sport! Results include: Mixed Y5/6 Tennis – 1st; DRET Mixed Y5/6 Small Schools (Netball & Football) – 1st; Mixed Y5/6 Netball – 3rd; Mixed Y2 Multi-Sports Event. We are also proud to share that we won the athletics event! Well done to all children involved. We look forward to upcoming Sports Days and more events next term.

Enriching our children's lives

Special Events and Enrichment Opportunities This half term, we were delighted to welcome a travelling theatre company into school to perform The Secret Garden for children in Years 2–6. The performance was truly wonderful, and the children were captivated by both the storytelling and the high quality of the production. As a Victorian classic, it was a new experience for many of our pupils, making it even more special to see them so engaged with such a timeless story. Following the performance, Year 5 also took part in an exciting workshop based on the book and the theatre production, which further deepened their understanding and enjoyment. Year 6 had the opportunity to visit Leicestershire’s Warning Zone, where they took part in a unique and valuable learning experience. The visit introduced them to a range of real-life dangers they may encounter, from online safety to risks within the community. The experience provided pupils with important knowledge about how to keep themselves and others safe, and encouraged them to make responsible choices. In addition, pupils in Years 5 and 6 took part in sessions led by a specialist team from Operation Encompass. These sessions focused on understanding and developing healthy relationships, helping children to build important social and emotional skills.   This term, Year 5 also completed their Bikeability training. All pupils made excellent progress in learning how to ride safely on the road. Cycling is something many of our children enjoy from Reception all the way through to Year 6, and it is fantastic to see their skills develop over time. The instructors were extremely impressed with the children’s impeccable behaviour and positive attitude towards learning, and many of our Year 5 pupils are now confident and competent cyclists. Year 4 enjoyed an engaging workshop led by Severn Trent Water, where they learned about the water treatment process and gained a fascinating insight into what happens after we flush the toilet! The session was both informative and fun, and the children came away with lots of interesting knowledge. As always, our sporting adventures have continued to thrive this half term. Many of our children have taken part in a wide range of competitions across different age groups, representing the school with enthusiasm and pride. We are incredibly grateful for the time and dedication given by staff and parents, who support and enable these enriching opportunities. Their commitment helps ensure that our pupils can access high-quality sporting experiences at all levels of competition. Finally, Cherry Class have had the exciting opportunity to share their ideas and vote for a special school dinner menu. Their chosen menu will be enjoyed by the whole school on Tuesday 9th June, and they decided on a delicious picnic-style lunch complete with chocolate brownies for dessert! We are very proud of how thoughtfully the children contributed their ideas and made their choices together.

Eco Warriors Update

Our wonderful Eco Warriors have been incredibly busy this half term and continue to make a fantastic contribution to our school community. They have created their very own website, Eco Today!, to help everyone learn more about how to care for the environment. The website shares useful information and encourages all pupils to play their part in protecting the world around them. If you would like to visit their very special page, please go to: https://ecotoday.mystrikingly.com The Eco Warriors have also designed and introduced two fantastic recycling ships, proudly named Boxington and Babyton. These are being used around school to help collect plastic recycling, making it easier for everyone to do their bit for the environment. In addition, the team have shared their favourite books from the Eco Library they have created, helping to inspire others to learn more about environmental issues. The Eco Warriors continue to support the school by monitoring electricity use in classrooms when they are not in use, helping to reduce waste. They also celebrate positive eco-friendly actions by giving out awards in Friday assemblies. We are very proud of their commitment, teamwork and passion for making our school a greener place!

spotlight SAFETY

With a mini heatwave coming for the May Half term here are some top tips to keep safe in water, which I am sure will be useful as families try to keep cool when temperature reach 30C° General Water Safety Tips Always Swim with a Buddy: Never swim alone. Having someone with you can provide assistance in case of an emergency. This is especially important for inexperienced swimmers. Learn to Swim: Ensure that you and your children know how to swim. Formal swimming lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. Be Aware of Water Conditions: Understand the specific risks associated with the water body you are in, such as currents, tides, and temperature. Cold water can lead to shock, which can impair your ability to swim. Check for Hazards: Before entering the water, look for potential dangers such as rocks, strong currents, or sudden drop-offs. If at the beach, familiarize yourself with the beach flags and their meanings. Avoid Alcohol: Stay sober when around water. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents. Wear Life Jackets: If you are engaging in activities like boating or kayaking, always wear a properly fitted life jacket. This is crucial for safety, especially in deep or moving water. Supervise Children: Always keep a close eye on children when they are near water. Never leave them unattended, even for a moment. Know What to Do in an Emergency: Familiarise yourself with basic rescue techniques and how to call for help if someone is in trouble. If you fall into cold water, remember to float to conserve energy and call for help. Avoid Inflatables in Open Water: Inflatable toys can easily be blown away by the wind, leading to dangerous situations. Use them only in controlled environments like pools. Stay Informed: Before heading out, check the weather and water conditions. Be aware of any local safety notices or advisories.   By following these tips, you can help ensure a safer experience for yourself and children when enjoying activities in, on, or around water. Always prioritise safety and be prepared for unexpected situations

Supporting Your Child Through a Change of Class Teacher

As we approach the transition to a new class teacher, we recognise that change - while exciting - can also feel uncertain for children.  As a school we will support all children with the changes to their class teacher and classroom in the new academic year and will provide opportunities to transition in the school day. Staff members also have transition meetings where they get to know your child better. Your support at home can make a big difference in helping your child feel confident, secure, and ready for the new term.

Talk openly and positively

Take time to chat with your child about the change. Encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings - whether they’re excited, nervous, or unsure. Reassure them that it’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of emotions. Speaking positively about the new teacher and the opportunities ahead can help build confidence.

Maintain routines

Keeping familiar routines at home - such as regular bedtimes, reading together, or homework habits - can provide a sense of stability during a time of change. Predictability helps children feel safe and supported.

Encourage questions

Let your child know it’s okay to ask questions about their new teacher, classroom, or daily routines. If you don’t know the answers, reassure them that they will find out soon and that their new teacher will help them settle in.

Build independence

Transitions are a great time to support your child in becoming more independent. Small responsibilities like packing their bag, organising their belongings, or talking about their day can help build confidence ahead of the new start.

Focus on strengths

Remind your child of their achievements and strengths. Reflecting on what they have done well in the past can help them feel more capable and positive about new challenges.

Stay connected with school

Keep an eye out for any information shared by the school about transition activities. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to support both you and your child. With encouragement, reassurance, and a positive outlook, most children settle quickly into their new class. We look forward to working together to make this transition a happy and successful experience for all.

Reminders and New Information

Holiday Bookings – A Gentle Reminder

As the rain sets in again, I’m sure many of us are already dreaming of brighter, warmer days ahead! If you are starting to think about booking a holiday, can we please kindly remind families to book trips during the school holidays and not in term time. We are very fortunate in Leicestershire, as our school holidays often begin earlier than many other parts of the country, particularly at Easter, Summer and October. This means families can often benefit from cheaper holiday prices simply by travelling when our term dates allow. This year, we have a two‑week break in October, giving families:

  • an earlier start to the holiday period
  • the chance to take advantage of mid‑week, lower‑cost deals (e.g., Tuesday–Tuesday or Wednesday–Wednesday)
  • more flexibility when planning trips abroad or UK breaks

Your child’s education is extremely important to us, and regular attendance makes a significant difference to their progress. At the same time, we fully appreciate the value of exploring new places, learning about different cultures, and enjoying experiences that broaden children’s horizons. This is one of the reasons we have built in a longer break in October—to support families in being able to enjoy holidays without children missing learning time. Thank you for working with us to support both excellent attendance and wonderful family experiences.
