CCY CONNECT september 2023 EDITION

by Kyle Meeks | CCY Shepherd

Faith and works? Or is it faith or works? Amanda and I are leading a small group that is currently addressing this very topic and more (we hope you will join us!). James 2 tells us faith without works is dead. However, Ephesians 2 tells us we are saved by faith, not by works. Which is it?

Our study this week led us to Galatians. In chapter 3 we see Paul addressing those who turn their focus back onto the works of the law. I don’t see many of us returning to the Old Testament law today. Do we however attempt to justify ourselves or cover our sins through being good? Do we think we’re good enough by being better than the next person?

Galatians 3:8 – Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith. Paul emphasizes our justification for our salvation is in Christ alone. We don’t have the power to justify ourselves, only Christ does. Therefore, as Ephesians says, we are justified through faith, not by works. It is why we continually celebrate Christ and His grace instead of ourselves and our works.

Works are not to be overlooked though, just approached differently. James 2 shows us that faith without works is dead. How can this be? Think of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. How do we get this fruit? Through abiding in the Spirit. The fruit is the outworking of the inward change the Spirit is having in our lives.

Galatians 5:25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

We have been redeemed for a purpose. Titus 2:14 reminds us that Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” Are you eager to do what is good in response to his redeeming grace? We are not called to believe and do nothing we are called to believe, abide in, and respond to God.

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

The time has come to embark on an incredible journey of faith and fun as we prepare to relaunch Royal Warriors on Wednesday, September 6th at 6:30 pm. The ultimate training program for children ages 3 to 5th grade.

Suit Up for God's Epic Adventure

Inspired by the timeless wisdom of Ephesians 6 and the powerful imagery of the Armor of God, Royal Warriors equips our children with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate life's challenges with courage and conviction. Throughout the year, we'll dive into the essential teachings of the Bible, engaging our kids through story times for the little ones and Bible reading sessions for the older ones. Our lessons also include interactive games, uplifting worship, and heartfelt prayer moments, all designed to help our young disciples grow in their understanding of God's Word.

Stay Alert and Stand Strong

Just as a warrior remains vigilant on the battlefield, our Royal Warriors will learn the importance of loving God and loving people in their daily lives. Through our lessons, we'll guide them in the art of studying their Bibles and show them creative, enjoyable techniques to memorize scripture verses. Our older warriors will explore ways to confidently share their faith with friends.

Stand Firm Together

Life's challenges can sometimes weigh heavily, even on the shoulders of our youngest members. In Royal Warriors, our children discover a place where they are surrounded by friends who stand by their side no matter what. Our intentional focus on fellowship builds meaningful connections. A highlight of our Wednesday nights is the dedicated prayer time, allowing our kids to lift each other up in prayer, creating bonds with one another and their teachers.

As we eagerly anticipate the return of Royal Warriors, be in prayer for our kids and leaders. May God's love guide our efforts and may this program continue to be a source of joy, and growth for our children.

Open up social media and you will see everyone living their best life. Vacations, new cars, big houses, the cutest kids, happiest couples, promotions, awards, trophies, and it goes on and on.

We mindlessly scroll through or watch clips of people who seemingly have it all. But what goes on behind the scenes? When the videos stop rolling and the camera is pulled away? If everyone is so happy why do we have a soaring rate of depressed, stressed, and anxious people? Could it be because it's all just a facade? Smoke and mirrors, images we pick and choose to show the world.

What are we doing? Why are we participating in the madness? Is it pride? I think it is. We have gotten so carried away looking like we have it all together, have the best house, car, spouse, kids, and life that we forget that in this world there will be trouble, and when that trouble is overcome it is because of God, not because of us. We miss out on connecting with others when we put up a facade rather than sharing reality. We miss out on blessing others and being blessed. More importantly, we miss out on sharing how mighty and awesome our God is. We miss out on sharing the glory and praise of His name, His mercy, His blessings. We can't share with others about God carrying us through our hardest, darkest hours if we never share those dark times with others. What of all those best things in our life…are we giving God the glory for those blessings? Nothing we have is through our works, but from God. When we post on social media all of our great, are making sure we let others know that it is by the hand of God we received the bounty?

Perhaps if we saw the raw reality of each of our lives we would feel less defeated when trouble strikes. Feel less the need to have it all together when in truth we all have bad, ugly times in our lives. Less alone and more encouraged. We could pray with each other more. We could lift up each other more. We could praise the name of God together in all the great times and in all the bad times. We could put down our pride and pick up the cross. Be less like the world and more like Christ.

“ Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father but from the world.” 1 John 2:16
