Book Speed Dating Meggan Ford

I frequently collaborate with the English Language Arts department at my school. They are my go-to people. This year, one of our English teachers decided to start the year off with a choice novel unit. I designed this speed dating with a book lesson for a senior class. The goal was to assist the students in choosing a book that piqued their interest.

When we choice reading, it is based around a theme. This particular theme was identity.

Getting Started

I decorated the library with our Valentine's Day decor to give it a cheesy feel. I always like things feeling extra special.

Books were all laid out on tables in groups of four. I tried to put books that were very different from each other at each table so students wouldn't stay in one spot.

Students were told to randomly pick a strip of paper when they walked in. They had to sit with that particular book.

The Rounds

Students were given four minutes to read each book and try it.

Round 1- They read the book that matched with title they chose when they walked in to the library.

Round 2- They Chose a book with a cover they liked.

Round 3- The Chose a book with a title that resonated with them

Round 4- They chose a book where they thought the character was different than them.

During each round, they rated their book.
