September is Suicide Prevention Month

Start the Conversation. Take the Steps. Make a Difference.

The statistics are alarming: One person dies by suicide every 11 minutes in the United States, making it the 11th leading cause of death overall. Sadly, as the cause of death amongst youth ages 10-24, it ranks 2nd. Much like the subject of mental illness, suicide is shrouded in fear, silence and misunderstanding.

But studies show that people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks them about it in a caring way and is ready to truly listen. Experts agree: Opening up about good, bad or messy mental health journeys creates space for healing and hope.

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is leading the charge to help individuals, friends and families find their voice…To muster the courage to start the conversation.

The organization’s recently published Suicide Prevention Kit includes tools, resources and guidance for anyone to recognize warning signs in our loved ones, begin talking openly about suicide prevention, and seek professional help.

Stepping out

In addition to spreading the word about national NAMI resources, our own NAMI San Mateo County staff and volunteers provide a variety of FREE educational, support and advocacy programs to thousands of local people living with mental illness and their families. Beginning at 9 am on October 4, NAMI SMC will host its largest community event of the year, NAMIWalks, a festive community resource fair featuring a fundraising 5K walk, music, a kid’s zone, food and more. The event is free to attend and registered walkers who raise a minimum of $100 receive a commemorative t-shirt and a chance to earn more swag. Step out and join the fun!
