Georgia AKA Sorority, Inc. Advocates,

Now is the time to act on behalf of kids across the state. Right now, Georgia leaders are making critical decisions this legislative session about policies and programs that help feed children, and we have an important opportunity to ensure they prioritize SUN Bucks, a program that can change the trajectory for hundreds of thousands of Georgia kids. The need is urgent and real. In Georgia, 1 in 5 kids lives in a household that struggles to put enough food on the table. For families, this often means impossible choices—paying rent or buying groceries, filling a prescription or stocking the fridge. But childhood hunger is a crisis we know how to solve. Having enough nutritious food every day is essential for healthy pregnancies, early brain development, physical growth and stronger educational outcomes. Nutrition programs like SUN Bucks give children the support they need to grow, thrive and succeed. When families get this support at every stage, communities invest not only in children's immediate well-being, but in a healthier, more prosperous future for Georgia. That's why this moment matters. No child should go hungry, and with your voice, we can make sure Georgia leaders hear that loud and clear. This toolkit puts that power in your hands.

What is SUN Bucks?

Summer has long been considered one of the hungriest times of the year. A 2024 statewide study reveals that families are overwhelmingly impacted by food insecurity once school is out and school meals disappear. In fact, nearly 80% of Georgia families who qualify for SUN Bucks report struggling to afford food during the summer months.

While kids can access the existing summer meals program, it only reaches a fraction of eligible families due to a variety of barriers. Many families face logistical challenges, such as transportation, work conflicts, lack of nearby meal sites and extreme summer weather. Limited hours of operation and the inconvenience of having to visit a specific location further contribute to the underutilization of the program, leaving many kids without consistent access to nutritious meals during the summer months.

That’s where SUN Bucks can help. The program provides eligible families with additional benefits to purchase groceries in the summer—$120 per child, and the survey shows that Georgia families who are eligible for the program would use these benefits to purchase nutritious foods. This could impact more than 1 million children across the state.

But investing in SUN Bucks does more than just address food insecurity. It also strengthens families, communities and businesses across Georgia. If state lawmakers opt in, Georgia could receive around $143 million in federal dollars, directly boosting local economies, especially in rural communities. Based on current estimates, that’s an expected economic impact of $214 million for the state.

It’s no wonder 82% of adults across the political spectrum statewide support Georgia’s participation in SUN Bucks. Now, we need action from Georgia leaders to make a significant difference in the lives of its children by implementing SUN Bucks this year and beyond.
